The only type of harmonizers that sound even usable are intelligent ones, and to use them correctly you need a basic understanding of chord structures and inversions.

People get frustrated with them and sell them cheap on eBay or your local Craigslist, which is what I'd suggest if you want to give one a go.

I have a Digitech that I have hooked into a MIDI datastream if I'm playing as a musician and don't have anyone else onstage that sings. But I've never used it in karaoke.... the backup parts are usually already there.
