Don't know about your area, but round here all the "better" KJs have gone to the PC format and have ripped out their own discs, which a few years ago was quite a process that required a bit of computer knowledge. (Thank you Audiograbber!!!! for making life simple!!!)
And you may consider it "customer service" but I consider playing a crap disc burnt from a 64kbps mp3+g file that a "friend" got from them (aka pirated song), very BAD BAD BAD customer service.
Or a crap scratched original that has spent the last 2 weeks on the back seat floor of a car piled under a couple beer cans and with a 1/2 eaten PB&J sandwich stuck to it.
Sorry this is one KJ who WON'T, and CAN'T play CDGs because my CDG player spends it nites in the closet next to my 600 original CDGs

Well, Ive had people ask if they could bring their own discs, and I said "SURE", but I'll reserve the right to play them based on their condition. I told them bring them and let me check them out BEFORE they put a slip in to sing off their disc. Only 3 so far go the big "no way". Wasn't a problem because I took the time to explain why. All three stayed for the show, and came back to others also. Two even bought me beers BECAUSE I took the time to explain and show why. Heck, I've been to other kj shows and brought my own discs, and it's kind of humorous when they say no problem, then ask "where did you get that rendition.....I have to have it?" No skin off my nose...so I tell them. Nice thing around my area, a lot of the KJ go to each others shows. Sometimes, that turns into a show within a show.....and that is REALLY fun. Just my :2cents: .

This is so long ago I almost forgot about it. Had one old "duffer" that was amazed that I still carried laser discs. He had some old DK lasers and wanted to know if he could bring a "few" the next time he came in. So..I said "sure". Well, he came back a couple of weeks later, hauling ten of those DK lasers in a duffle bag. They were in near mint condition. He told me he and his wife, now deceased, used to sing together at home, and this was the first time he'd "dug em out". This guy did Sinatra, Martin, Bennett, and looked a little like Burl Ives. Very entertaining, gre at poise and stage presence, plus this guy could really sing. I guess computers are good, if that's what you're into, but I would have missed THAT performance if all I ran was computers with cdg/dvd drives. Plus, I'm basically an analog guy. I like the old stuff. Again, just my .

Good point, but now I have to hump around a PC, CDG player, LD player, Cassette Player, 8-track player, and a record player to keep everyone happy?
Yeah it is cool that the old guy had some LDs, and brought em in, but sorry not at my show. I went to a laptop system to compact what I carry, and that is that, no more CDGs/Lds/Cassettes/8-tracks/reel to reels/records

Yeah, some of my friends went the computer route, and I'm NOT knocking that. Just that at my age, plus I only want one gig a week, could have a couple more, and it's nice to know, like I said in previous posts, that we can get the best of both worlds, vintage and digital, depending on whose show we go to on which night. Ya..I'm the Friday vintage guy. Lot's of luck to you and your business.

And how do you know that every personal burn you receive was "a crap disc burnt from a 64kbps mp3+g"??? I take personal insult to your assessment of the above. My personal burns were done by me from my originals. I have Goldenhawk installed on my PC, and I use a PLEXTOR burner to make my copies. I burn them at a very slow speed (4X). I take care of my CDGs (personal burns too). I keep them clean and free of fingerprints. You won't find food stains or the like on my discs, and to say that about everyone is absolutely ridiculous.

I still play lasers as well & on some rare occasion even get someone bringing one in. Not a common occurance, but they are very happy to know they still can.

I can appreciate what twansenne is saying and yes, I can appreciate how some plonkers would bring in low quality pirated CDGs which one should not have to go near with a 10 ft barge pole. But I also have to agree with cueball... some of us do go to quite some trouble to ensure our disks are as good as we can get them and do not treat them like dog's dinners. Give us a break! Stop lumping us in with the lowlifes!
I also appreciate that a KJ has no way of knowing the quality of any disk that a customer brings in (especially in the case of a "newbie" or non-regular) and it is the KJ's perogitive as to whether the disk should be played. I agree that lugging a laptop is far better for the back and investment protection than all those CD boxes and the player to go with them... and of course that does mean there's no player for CDG's.
But what of a disk with standard CD format.. ie just music, no lyrics? They can be played in a laptop's CD/DVD drive. Would you allow them to be played twansenne?

A few years ago I bring my whole collection of karaoke cds with me (not burn cd). Yes a few boxes of them in my car booth. Now I only bring along around 10cds. I change them weekly; drop a few and add a few more. I find it very tedious burning a compilation dics; that is the only reason why I don't bring a burn dics.
A round here it is a very common to see singers bringing their own cd collection. In many places the house will help keep those collection for their regular customers. At the moment I have more than 30 cds kept at KJ booth in one of my regular club.

Why can't I bring my thumb drive with standard MP3+g files to any show and EXPECT the KJ to be able tp play it ----even if he is 100% DISC BASED.
Laptops are cheap enough and their are very good FREE software players available.
I'm not asking the KJ to switch to PC based ...but what about customer service for the singer who wants to carry just a small thumb drive with his favs on it
hmmmmmmmmmm?

one word...
VIRUS!!!
I'm not saying I don't trust someone with a thumbnail drive. ((okay, yeah, I guess I AM! !))
In today's world with how many virii there are, and some people's inexperiences with the pc... I just play it careful. I've helped people I thought were really safe, only to find tons of spyware on their pcs. And they wondered why their pcs were so slow and were considering getting a better one or a newer one... when it was only a year old! !
I don't consider bringing ONE extra player for customer discs that big a deal, but Twan is certainly NOT the first computer jocker I've seen out there that says they won't play customer discs. And I've been to computhost shows that crashed trying to read the discs I brought in, and no they weren't scratched! !... to me, customer service is ALL about the show, and yes, I'll bring in a player EVEN if it's not used that night!

Rarely go to other shows anymore but back when I did it was usually to look for and sing new stuff. Then at a certain point I decided I wasnt going to haul cd's around anymore because a host did not have them.
It is very very rare to see singers in this area with personal cd's, at least at my shows because they know I'm computerized and have a good selection.
The last few times (2 or 3)I have gone other shows they were old friends with disc systems. One with a Mackie 808. I hooked the laptop into a spare channel and in two minutes everybody had my library for use also. It is easier than thumb drives or cd's and promotes their business and mine. Besides it gives the regular host breaks when I might play 2 or 3 in a row.

I understand the concerns of a virus --but I have similiar concerns of putting a customer disc in my new cdg player that is scratched dirty and has smudge on it

Hey jamkaraoke,
If you "please come to boston", bring your "thumby wachamacallit" and if you can hook it into my system....not computerized....you're more than welcome to do "your own stuff". Actually, that might be kind of fun. I have a video switcher, and a few extra inputs, so I don't see it as a problem. BUT, what do I know, I'm basically an analog guy. Anyway...COME ON DOWN.....and bring your "thumby thing". For that matter, ANYBODY can do that at my show if they want. It's all about having fun......
RIGHT??!!
And LONMAN, we've discussed the lasers before. Never leave home without them.
Something would seem to be missing from the show, ( like lugging that gawd awful heavy case in and out...getting old) but I still get requests from the "vintage" karaoke singers to perform off those. I like being able to offer the "original" disc format. Actually, the faces on the "younger" people is "priceless" when they first see
them. You must have seen that a couple off times yourself.

You'll have a song fubar, but that's about it. I'll take THAT risk over the potential of having to redo my entire computer!

The last time i looked a scratch or thumb print on a disc has not been know to contain a virus that can be transmitted to a disc player. A thumb drive can transmit one to a computer. Not on my system. I don't care if you are my best friend, it wont happen unless i can take it home and virus scan it first.
