Autoplay is merely software that opens and runs a file when, in this case, a disk is inserted into the drive.  If it happens to open a file infected with a virus... guess what, your PC just caught something nasty.

Karaoke software is merely software used to to play a file, the software has to open the file to access it....  open a file with a virus and your PC will probably need some TLC.

No difference between the end result!

I blame Microsoft for this -- the terminology "open". It is a complete misnomer. You either 1) run a program or 2) send a file name as an argument to another program to run.

If you don't have autoplay on, the only way you could run a program is to double-click on a program file.  If you send the file to your karaoke program, there is nothing bad that can happen.

I keep forgetting that to a lot of people this is all black magic -- they don't really know what "open" means. If you do know what you are doing, it is safe to use a thumb drive. If you don't know what you are doing, it probably isn't safe to do anything. Which is why, I guess, I am always fixing other people's computers and mine never seem to be broken.

And a CD placed into a PC is no different than a thumb drive.

Just to add a bit more info to mckyj57's statement:

A virus is executable code. Karaoke files are just DATA files (graphics and music), not executable code. If your karaoke player has an Import or Play File or Open command, or drag the icon to the player, it will only play DATA files that it can play. It will do nothing with executable code.

On the other hand, if you Left-Click a file on the desktop or Flash drive or CD, that's where you can run into trouble. Clicking on the file in that manner, Windows will handle both kinds of files. If it's a program or virus, it will execute the code. If it's a data file, then it finds the appropriate program to read it.

Autoplay is just like clicking on the file in that manner. I always have autoplay OFF. I want to be in control of what happens when I insert a CD or Flash drive.
