I use win amp with a with http://www.autokdj.com/ plug in and the pacemaker plug in.  This set up allows you to search your library set you singer listing and adjust tempo and pitch.  It will also allow you to send the karaoke graphics to a seperate tv screen while working on the laptop.  I've used Kara fun also but I'm much happier with the winamp.  The autokdj pluggin also allow for say, someone in your line up wants to sing in a different key you can set that in the karaoke playlist function so when it's there turn you don't have to remember to change it, or you can do the pitch change during the song if someone doesn't relize it's out of there range and want it lowered.   I have also used the audiograbber for ripping and have had satifactory results it ripps most CD+Gs ok although I do get the occasional songs that the graphics get messed up in the middle of the song, but for free I can't complain to much.

And it is FREE

Dude, you have no right to come in here and lay into me for getting p_issed at some random tech support guy, unless of course you happen to BE that tech support guy, which I can totally believe at this point.
heheheh no, it wasn't me, but I've done that job with my regular IT career I've done now for the past 24 years, and my belief still stands.

You bought with ONE goal in mind. ONE software. Then you bought a pc preinstalled, and expected it to work. I "THINK" if you'd done more research, you'd possibly realize that VISTA is a crap-filled OS that has had NOTHING but problems since it's release. Granted, it's fine for a stand-alone system, and for software that is released to work on it, you should be okay, and I TOTALLY understand your frustration in that ya bought a software that SAID it was supported, and you expected that. But it's getting OLDER software to work on it is where VISTA totally comes up short. JUST like XP did when it was first released.

I'm not dissing your buying decision, just your vent that Vista's been out a year and the company SHOULD have the tech support available for it. Now I didn't know at the time that they SAID they supported VISTA, so your vent makes more sense. But understand that many software companies didn't support XP until the first SP came out! then they HAD to! But with our tech support team at my regular JOB, they said and continued to reiterate "I'm NOT going to troubleshoot XP's failures... our software is solid, it works on lower Operating Systems... it's up to Microsoft to fix this crap!"

... and you took my frustration/vent that I was talking entirely to you about the folks that need help with systems, which I WASN'T meaning to convey. Hey, I wouldn't be here if I didn't need help in software, hardware, audio, etc... just understand that what I was return venting about is folks that don't know what they're asking of tech support folks. ESPECIALLY on a new O.S.!

The truth though is that PCKJ has been discussed on here for years, and it's a resource hog on multiple Operating Systems. It does run well, but there are other software alternatives to it. Alternatives that offer very similar ways of running karaoke on computer. MY research on PCKJ was I really liked the PCDJ-RED, but didn't care for the BLUE, nor the FX, nor the KJ packages, and hated that you had to have such choices. Personally, I wanted PCDJ-Red with a karaoke plugin... but such wasn't going to be the reality of that.

Ok, I went down to PCDJ's offices and the guy who helped me out was really nice and even gave me a free copy of PCDJ Blue. I also solved the problem I was having with glitches in my lyrics when I ripped them to the HD by getting Power CD+G. But, now I'm having problems finding a good way to generate a new songbook. There are plenty of programs out there but they all cost money, or if they are free they don't work right.

Adding to the problem is the fact that power cd+g's naming of the mp3 files is horrible.
So far I haven't been able to get it to list the artist separetly, it wants to smash the song title and artist together with no slash in between to make it more readable. So I get something like this:

Jimi Hendrix Foxy Lady

So I was wondering if anybody had some suggestions for a good method for making a songbook.

It is not free but I feel it is worth every penny if you are dealing with any large amount of files (or expect to in the future).

I recently purchased Compuhost after researching them all. It is expensive, but worth it. Just the ability to promote yourself and your venue's events on screen will pay for itself in no time -- our club manager is happy about the ability to promote the next day or week's event in the promo trailer after the list of upcoming singers.

I checked out Compuhost's site and that's what I'm looking for. One thing though can the scrolling "next-up" text be turned off when ppl are singing? I can see some possibly hating that.

It has a setting for that, but I can't seem to get it working. I thought it would be a problem, but no one has complained. (I don't look at the lyrics much anyway, so it doesn't bother me when I am singing.)

If you have a very small amount of dead air, you wouldn't get much of a chance to see it anyway, so I think to be effective it has to be on all the time. We set it at speed "1".

In any case, no one has complained and a lot of people have complimented us on the change.

I got the no scroll while singing working on the first night but decided to turn it back on so singers knew when they were up.

Yes, we have found it makes singers head for the mic while the previous song is winding up. It speeds up the rotation quite a bit, to the point we have very little dead air.

Some singers use to complain about the distracting video behind the words on the laser discs.  Do they complain about names scrolling on the bottom of the screen?

Ok, I got the Karaoke Song List Creator and was able to create a printable songbook in excel. This program is actually pretty nice, all you do is select the manufacturer disc codes and it creates the list with artist, title, track number, and the disc code and sorts it alphabetically by artist, title, or disc code. Of course you have to update the database  for the newer stuff which probably costs $.

Also, got hired on for a 3 night/week gig. The club is providing all the hardware, all I bring is the laptop. :)
