I don't think you should re-instal Windows at this stage.  You're saying it's a new computer that's running on XP Pro, have you made certain that you have all the latest Windows update and audio & video driver installed? Is a newer Bios version available?  What's running in the start up menu?  Have you clean up your Windows registry using the freeware CCleaner?? So many things to do before thinking of a new installation in my opinion!

Good luck!

take it back to the place you got it and TELL them it's crashing on KNOWN, GOOD applications (good catch BTW on the difference of application and programs).

If it's THAT new, it's under warrenty.

This was a refurb machine I got off ebay. It has IBM guts in a small tower case. It's a P4, 1GB RAM, 200GB hard drive, legal copy of XP Pro with service pack 2, 8 USB ports, onboard video, DVD burner, built in non wireless NIC and it came with an IBM keyboard and a wired optical mouse. I paid $265 for it, a new OEM copy of windows XP would have cost me over $100 alone.

When I first got it, before I started ripping my huge Latin music collection and over 125 Karaoke disks it was super fast and ran great. The more I put on the HD, it did start to slow down a bit. Since I'm new to all of this Karaoke stuff and DJ stuff I have been experimenting with a lot of different demo programs. Roxbox, Sax and Dottie's, Karafun, MTU hoster, powerkaraoke burner, siglos and a ton of other programs including winamp, Creative Labs media center(for the USB external soundcard), Quintessential player, OTS Ultramixer and several more which I can't think of right now.

I'm thinking that the Creative labs software started the problems now that I'm listing most of what I have installed over time. It didn't seem to want to behave with other programs running. As far as the computer not being powerful enough, that's hogwash. It's plenty powerful. I'm running a bunch of stuff on my 5 year old Athlon and it's fine.

I did find the COA on the back of the computer. It's small and the printing is VERY small for my 50 year old eyes so I'm going to have to use a magnifying glass to read the serial number if I decide to re install windows. I'm going to try to take a bunch of stuff of the HD before I do ANYTHING else. I have a 500GB external drive that I'm going to use to get things archived.

Bingo on the 500GB external backup drive - One of the co's that puts out fliers in the Sunday paper has those on sale for $100 right now - a VERY good investment for anyone who has spent the time converting CDGs...I have the Western Digital "book" and it's amazingly compact. I'm going to pick up another just in case...I've put too much time into this conversion thing to risk anything happening! (Like the 500 GB book growing legs and walking...)

one of the things I discovered while trying out lots of audio programs (and that included the various Karaoke ones) was I had to do a full reinstall when a couple of programs didn't deinstall cleanly.

Well, if you don't want to, best of luck to ya. I have a feeling you'll be chasing your virtual tail on this for a while. SOMETIMES a clean, new install is the best way!

I'm beginning to think you're right, but I'm going to chase my tail a bit more before I reinstall windows. I think I'll get another 5--GB drive for a backup too. At $100 that's cheap insurance.
