I've got loads of testimonial (photo's, certificates) of my 70's and 80's past too Ollie, but I made myself a promise when I was young and I'm going to adhere to it..
It goes like this..
"I Kappy refuse to be an old fart living in the past like the 400 lb 50 year old that still lives his life back when he was a popular tackle on the HS football team"..
Point being, life is NOW.. The past just is a distraction. We all have awards someplace.. If I get mine out, all it is is depressing to see what DID NOT take place that could've given credentials, and past evidence.. There's temptation to post a few road photo's.. but I won't.. This isn't a place for past resumes IMHO.. All that impresses is how we interact in here now.
It's 2008.
Trophies, Paper, Badges, Military Uniforms, Photo's with the HS Homecoming queens, Ivy League School docs, BA, MA, and Phd's and Martial Art belts mean what in Karaoke Scene ? I don't understand.
Back in 1988, techs still knew what 6L6's and even Variacs pertained to

I think old audio was fabulous too, but to state this to those today doesn't matter much either. Analog won't be known my many..

Interesting to say the least. I would imagine there are some here that do have more knowledge and experience than others. I would assume most here don't even consider sound production to be their main source of income. I don't claim to be a psychic and be able to see the future of sound, but I do have very good reasoning abilities and am sure I can solve any problem that comes along. Back in the early 80's their was a guy with a piece of paper, I think he called it a degree, I do believe he was an engineer, he was the brains of the Zilwaukee Bridge project over by Detroit.......it fell down. I wonder if he seen that coming. I don't claim to know everything, and I probably never will, but I know enough to keep me going in the sound production business for over thirty years. People should be more respectful of others, its just proper etiquette.

I can put a few academic initials after my name, but none is related to audio engineering. All what I know about SR and related knowledge are from reading and some practical experience.
One aspect of knowledge that I wish I have is in the field of computer language and codes. I am to old to learn a new language and beside, there are other more interesting things to do..... like karaokeing ![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)

Quote: I am to old to learn a new language
I'm trying to learn singing. That's a different language IMHO... Point being, I think the nice thing about being old compared to most, and having done certain things is that WE NO LONGER NEED to feel compelled to compete or use our past degrees for pretentious purposes, WE CAN'T compete with the YOUNG, more agile, more energetic, better built, better looking, very wealthy, and powerful in this culture.. Western culture is for the young and the attractive, the wealthy (and whether this is shallow or not is moot, the elderly get in the way in the eyes of many, we aren't needed, and in some cases even wanted) being older in some ways comes as relief for me, I CAN'T compete with the youth of our culture, so I don't, my whole upbringing was orientated for competing, and that is stressful, and painful, now I can screw up, fall apart, flunk, and do the stuff I was doing in school but still be respected while I botch, but learning that some MODESTY, etiquette, and being willing to be, (and accept ourselves FINALLY in a society where it's all about getting the "A" or "10") average or less gains more respect among those on a level playing field than throwing credentials in faces is important. At our age, to believe flashing college degrees or past credentials in the faces of anyone to "show off" or flaunt is stupid ! It makes those doing-so appear as has-beens, and it carries VERY little merit in the eyes of others.
I suck at many things, even more-so than 90% here ! and I get proud and teary-eyed thinking about it :hi5:
Who in the Internet gains respect telling others how great they are, or flashing degrees that most of us have several off ? This is the Internet where most guys are a little better endowed than average (which is 15 inches), multimillionaires, gorgeous supermodels, stronger than Frank and Ken Shamrock (who I think are supposed to be fighting one-another next week sometime), etc. Awards that some threw away because they mean bullxit in real today just are useless in terms of "drool factor", about as flashy as a 50's gutted out caddy today.. I need to be happy with what I am now.. NOTHING else matters regarding what I did, that's my memory but it has NO interest in anyone elses life when flashed out've context just to toot my own horn.
NOBODY CARES about somebody elses past "degree" if the person doesn't presently play well with others.
So what does Phd stand for ? In some cases "pin headed dope"

Ollie, learning new stuff like flying those dang helicopters is fun, if you want to compete, seeing you've been singing for 60 years, sub in Singers Showcase ! I'll rank you honestly.
Jian, I was nominated for the Hall of Fame in Singsnap.. See, now that's what I like about that place.. Some of the folks there have an even more sarcastic sense of humor than I have !!!!

Hex Steven, you must have been reading my resume. I not only don't try to compete anymore, I love it when there is something heavy that needs to be moved and the younger guys just assume that thats what they are around for. Of course while their busy moving things I get to talk to the women ![LOL LOL](./images/smilies/emot-LOL.gif) .

But how smooth are you regarding females ?
Can you get them to come home with you and do your oil changes, or gap your spark plugs ? Can you get them to explain and show you how to check your oil (so you don't have to bother doing it) ? Can you get them to remove your old battery so you don't have to get Sulphuric Acid on your clothing ? Since most females know how to do that stuff these days, why should a real man get dirty engine gunk on his hands, or even risk breaking a nail or worse ?
Time to put on my face, grab cosmo, and get my beauty rest. Damn, I need a woman now to swaddle me and burp me.. Must be some female out there that's worthy of a real man !

Steen got it right, it's all about today. I have BS in EE, MBA in Marketing. Started 3 start up companies. I work in area where most of the stuff people work on won't be available to public for next few years. I have friends who has PhD and work for NASA Ames center, where you won't see stuff they work on for 10 years, or more.
Despite all these degrees, the here and now is what matters. I have learned everything I know from other people. The Karaoke stuff, I did months of research both online and talking to other professionals, including many local musicians and audio engineers.
Degrees don't give you knowledge, they teach you ability to learn. Having a degree to me mean that those people are more likely learn things on their own rather having it handed to them. However, it all still depends on individuals to accumulate their own knowledge.

It's also about drive, and ambition to make something of ourselves.. Gates dropped out've school.. Some of the wealthiest folks don't have degrees, they have ambition, and desire.. If I show my degrees from Skidmore, Colgate, and Cornell, what good does it do ? I ended up on the road doing different stuff.. LOADS of money on education lost according to some.. Those degrees are now of course stale.. Useless, mean nothing.. Purpose of degrees are to get us to a place in life we want to be in REAL, and they aren't things to "flash" around, because like cars, money, and experience, MANY have MUCH higher and impressive credentials in any given area..
It's really about being happy with where we are.. and if not.. striving to get there NOW... Yeah Eben... I can get degrees on Ebay cheap too.. ![LOL LOL](./images/smilies/emot-LOL.gif) , thing is, those impressed by such things aren't people that I wish to know, The surface stuff doesn't matter to me, ESPECIALLY on the net.. Don't care about the Cars folks drive, the market value of their home, etc.. It's about how I get along with them on bboards such as this that matters, nothing else
