Hi all  

one of the regulars is a female with a low voice. She has about 3 songs she does, and does them VERY well. 2 of them are Cher. Naturally, she's beginning to lose interest.

I was in her shoes when I started, so I understand the frustration. I was a pop / rock only singer and had to key-shift almost everything, but when someone told me to try Josh Turner and Trace Adkins... it opened a door. It's great when you find singers in your range!

Any suggestions for low-range female artists would be appreciated!

Amen, brother.  I never knew country until I had the same frustration. Now I do mostly country -- Geo. Strait, Randy Travis, Tracy Lawrence are my favorites. (I also have come to appreciate the simple lyrics and sentiments -- now so many rock songs seem self-absorbed and contrived.)

Have you suggested trying some songs for males? I have seen some females do Journey and have some luck....

Brandi Carlile (not many of her songs available but it is new), some of Tina Turner's stuff is low. She should not rule out singing some guy stuff that is in higher range for male voices, i.e. Journey. Jet (I change it from "Do You Wanna Be My Girl" to "Do You Wanna Be My Guy"), Anna Nalick's "2 a.m."  Howie Day "Collide"  If she likes blues, "Playing with Fire" by Shannon Curfman is pretty low.

I'll think more on this as I used to be limited to lower range female stuff.

Is she strictly pop? Or ?

My friend has the same problem (caused by smoking too much over the years) and usually has too take songs down as much as 5 steps. She usually sticks to blues and jazz which suit that range, like Peggy Lee - Come Rain or Come Shine, Diana Krall - Peel Me A Grape, Give Me One Reason - Tracey Chapman, Wonder - Natalie Merchant. She also sings some killer male songs like Mustang Sally, which is always a crowd pleaser and Stormy Monday - Stevie Ray Vaughn. She always gets loads of compliments when she sings as her voice sounds so low and sultry.

If modern pop is OK...

Me & U- Cassie
Caught A Lite Sneeze- Tori Amos (this one's pretty moody though)

If she can really sing suggest "Family Affair"- Mary J. Blige. It's not all that high and will definitely  get her noticed. And fill the dance floor.

Most of the low voice female singers i see, sing guy songs.

Gladys Knight & Pips, Lena HOrne, Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Peggy Lee. ..still thinking.

How about Karen Carpenter, Stevie Nicks and Patti Smith?

Bonnie Raitt, Alannah Myles, Reba, Pretenders (Chrissie Hynde) , Indigo Girls, Shawn Colvin (not sure if they have any of her songs on Karaoke) and The Bangles (Suzanna Hoff) all had some songs in the low range. Depends on her style, I would check them to see if she can sing any of the songs by them.

Thanks for the replies so far. She will be thrilled!

Karen- she's only done pop so far, but I think she's got some country in her. She's a rare one... got amazing stage presence (dancing, mime, etc.) AND hits every single note, AND does cool effects with her voice AND changes a few of the lyrics without the F-bomb. Of course, she's been doing the same few songs over and over... this will open a door for her.

Nice when those types come along. We have a few tremendous singers attending our shows and I tell them the only reason I've been able to stay in the karaoke business for so many years is singers like them! (Just found out one has an advanced degree in opera, for heaven sakes!  I wondered, she is incredibly good, but thus far as REFUSED MY REQUEST to sing something operatic...)

Glad you've got some suggestions for her now. It'll be interesting to see how she does with songs she hasn't sung for ever and ever.
