Please, only people who have some sort of knowledge or direct experience with CAVS.

I'm not looking for people to tell me what they think of CAVS on this thread or how bad CAVS is.

I'm looking for help to get my disks to run.

I just received 3 CAVS disks. One is labeled SUPER KARAOKE 21, the other one is 22. Both are Pioneer recordings. The third is Magic Tracks.  I downloaded a program from CAVS USA and installed it. The program launches, flashes and then quits on one of my desktops, I haven't tried it yet on the other desktop.

Anyone know of a Karaoke player program that works with CAVS disks?

I understand that I can get a program to convert the CAVS files to standard CD+G files. I just wanted to test out the disks and make sure all the songs were there and see/hear them.  Thanks

What program did you download and try?
I own and have used (no longer do though) Play CDG SP from CAVS.
It works.
The trial version should allow you to see and hear, although probably time limited.
Is you drive CDG capable?

Yes, that's the program.

Is the drive CDG capable? Well I can rip disks using audiograbber. Does that mean it's CDG capable? I'm going to put a regular Karaoke disk in and see if it read ok.

I just installed it on my other computer too and it does exactly the same thing. PITA. My choice right now are to buy a CAVS machine or buy a program to convert the CAVS files into CD+G. For some reason nothing is ever easy for me. I'm going to put the disk into my DVD player that's hooked up to my TV and see what happens, probably nothing. Grrrrrrrr...

Ok, we may be onto something here. I put a Karaoke disk in and it's playing as an audio file. When I look at the properties it shows one file per song. Looks like you may have figured this out. I have been looking to get a Liteon drive, looks like that's what I need to do. I was going to get an external so I can go from machine to machine, but I may just get an internal for the PC that I'm planning on using to go on the road with me. Any other way to determine if my DVD drive is the culprit?

I heard Roxbox has a Scdg converter that will take those files & enable them to be burned.

Let me ask you this, when the CAVS player is playing you only get audio, no video, I think is what you are telling me. Even though you are not getting any video, is there a black screen box that appears?

No the program from CAVS doesn't run, I used winamp with autokj to play a file from the DVD drive with a regular Karaoke disk in it.

The CAVS player just flashes a little white box for less than a second and then quits. You barely see anything. It doesn't work at all.

So far I haven't been able to run the CAVS disks at all yet.

Right now my regular player is winamp with autokj plugin on my main computer. It's the only one I can get to run every time and it doesn't crash my computer. It also allows me to change the pitch AND the tempo. I have my Karaoke disks ripped to the computer using audiograbber to MP3+G. One MP3 and one CDG file per song.

What I'm trying to do is to get a program to run my new CAVS disks right from the DVD drive without ripping them to the HD. I want to do that eventually, but right now I just want to test them out and play a few of the songs on the new disks.

The only thing I can suggest now is to go back to the PlayCDG SP download page and check to see you meet all of the PC requirements (including Direct X 7.0 or higher) and if you do - try reinstalling the program

RoxBox has changed their convertor to one that works with both SuperCDG and Neo-G but you have to be connected to the internet to use it.  I am assuming it has more to do with naming the files than anything  else.

Thanks for hanging in there on this thread and knowing what you're talking about, I appreciate the help. That player works. It's VERY basic and the song list comes up as garbage characters, but at least I can play the songs and get some idea of what I have and what the quality is. I'm pleased so far, the Pioneer recordings sound good on the tiny speakers built into the screen, we'll see what it sounds like on Sunday through my sound system.

I believe that when I get a new Liteon DVD drive I'll be able to get a good song list, not garbage characters. Who knows, there may be a list of what's on my disks somewhere in a text file or an excel file.

If the recordings are as good as I think, I got a smokin' deal at $58 for over 1500 Pioneer Karaoke tracks. They sound to be of comparable quality or close to Soundchoice quality. With the Magic Tracks disk I have over 2500 CAVS tracks, that may be enough to justify getting a CAVS Karaoke machine. Heck, I can carry around 3 disks, that's not a big deal. Besides, the CAVS machine will play my regular Karaoke disks. If I get a USB model I can put everything on and external HD. Then I don't need to carry a computer around at all.

At that price I can just about guarantee the disks are not legal. I am not aware of the Pioneer tracks shipping legally for some time, and that compilation would cost over $135.00 to make just for mechanical royalties -- never mind the cost of producing and distributing the disk.

These were a second set that someone had. They are legit. Even at $135 those disks would still be a good deal. I doubt you could find them retail for anywhere close to those prices if you could find them at all.

Also, I think people are ripping their audio CDs and their Karaoke disks and then selling them on ebay. If I buy their legal disks what am I doing wrong? Nothing.

I don't recall condemning you, launching into a diatribe, or otherwise foaming. If someone tells me where *I* can buy 1500 Pioneer tracks legally for less than $100, I will do it tomorrow. Where can I do that?

I bought them on ebay. I thought I had mentioned that somewhere. As far as I can tell these discs are legitimate. I'm not interested in bootleg or pirated discs and if I was doing that I wouldn't be announcing it here. I got a set of 78 Sweet Grorgia Brown discs for only $68 on ebay, are they bootleg too? I also got a set of All Hits for like $35 or $40 that came with a set of Supercore. These are all almost too good to be true, but as far as I can tel they are all, legal, legitimate discs. If I wanted to I imagine I could find all the Karaoke songs I want for free, so why am I buying discs?

If I overreacted I'm sorry, but I'm tired of the constant crying and complaining about illegal disks etc. I'm trying to do things legally. I don't have a lot of money right now just starting out so I look for good deals on ebay and sometimes I get lucky. Lots of times I get outbid. I can't afford to buy sets for $300 or $400 at retail right now. I'm trying to build a decent selection the best way I can for the least amount of money, but I'm buying the discs, not pirating them.

If people are ripping their discs to their hard drive and then they decide they don't need their discs anymore so they sell them on ebay and I buy them for cheap, I'm not doing anything wrong. I'm buying legitimate CDs. I plan to keep them as proof that I have legitimate media to back up my song selection.

No offense taken, and I probably should have kept my mouth shut. If you had said "Sweet Georgia Brown" I wouldn't have paid much attention, but Pioneer raised a red flag with me. Those tracks, as far as I know, were licensed to Supercore, which does sell them at a rate (barely) above what the mechanical rights run for.

Still in all, you aren't really interested in my fine distinctions and discerning technical mind, so I should keep my mouth shut. And I will definitely try to keep the foaming down -- foam is usually a pollutant.

Believe me, I feel lucky to get this deal. From what I have read, Pioneer recordings are very good. Based on what I heard last night, they ARE quite good. I hope I can get a couple more deals like this, I'll be all set for a while.

I'm going to continue to scour ebay looking for more. I want a bunch of Soundchoice disks, but people bid them up way too high on ebay. Eventually as I get more gigs and make some money I may just break down and buy some SC Foundations and bricks. Until then I have enough to get started right now. At this point I need to print some books and make sure I have a reliable Karaoke player program or get a decent Karaoke machine, then I'm ready to go.
