I had a singer tonight tell me my system hasn't sounded right for several months.
He sang several songs and on his last song he was talking to me for almost the entire song, on the microphone about how bad it sounded. Now after listening to his explanation several times...
I think he's complaining about how high he sounds. Now i'm thinking he means because the music must have been a step or 2, too high and he was singing like a soprano instead of a baritone. Which could happen if he is use to singing a different version. And then he told me about how another KJ has his EQ settings set. And i proceeded to tell him that every system depending upon the different components, will have different EQ settings and i highly doubt that any 2 systems would have the same EQ settings.
Then he told me to go to his KJs karaoke and sing some songs to hear what he's talking about.
First off, if it's a different song version and it's done in a lower key than the one i played, the EQ wouldn't have anything to do with how high his voice sounded.
And he said my system makes everyone sound like girls singing. So now i'm totally confused about everything he said about anything. ![Surprise :O](./images/smilies/emot-eek.gif) LMAO
Can an EQ setting make everyone sound like girls?
He said only the voice is bad.. The music sounds good. ![no ](./images/smilies/emot-shakehead.gif)
A little bit about him...
Ever see vehicles covered with bumber stickersssssssssssssssssssssss???????
Nobody else has ever said anything like that about the sound before.

Look very carefully at your mic channel eq setting. Where do you set your hi, mid and lo. Do you reset for every singer?
If a singer tell you that his vox sound like a girl voice, chance is he is right and you should re- EQ the voc. He is not complaining about the backing track but the tone of the vocal. You could have fix that with the eq.
I am very sure you never touch the eq of the mic channel the whole night and that you only use the fader to control the vol mix.

He stood by me for the next 3 singers and i played with the channel EQ and he said it didn't sound any different. I turned down the high and that didn't help. [highlight=red]I turned on the low more and that didn't help. [/highlight] EDIT I still think he was talking about the key.

Then why did you not change the key for him when he sing, if that is what he wants? You don't seem to be able to communicate with your singer.

HMMMM.....maybe sidewinder should invite some of us to his show/s and we could give him some of our "professional assistance". Now....where did you say your shows were?

Criticize? Of course!
Reading this makes my appreciate my group even more. They never ask me for anything except "Turn It Up!!!"
Do you guys really change the key on a singer mid-song? Wow... that would really mess me up anyway... I do have a couple of older "Down Two" types that come in some... if they can stand the racket... but if I don't get the key where they want it at first, I stop and give them a do-over.

I will change a key mid song only if the singer asks for it, & sometimes they do.

I didn't know what he was talking about and i'm still not sure i understand exactly what he meant.
I'll change the key and when we find the right one, i'll start the whole song over. ![Surprise :O](./images/smilies/emot-eek.gif) And again if i have to. Customer satisfaction. Why should they sing a song that is going to make them strain their voice and make them sound bad? I give everyone what they want, if i know what they want.
He couldn't explain it to me the way he wanted to. And i'm not psychic. If he wanted the key changed, i could have and would have done it. I can change his name with my system.
On his way out he had to stop and explain it to the bouncer for 20 minutes.
The last thing i want is someone that isn't happy with they way they sound.
As far as Frankie goes, he had special very tight custom made underware to "help caress" him, when he hit the high notes. :O LMAO :hi5:

I change the eq all the time, on my own. When a male is singing "Folsom Prison Blues", or "Your Man", I emphasize the bass (whereas normally I have a little knee at 2.5KHz). When we have a duet with someone doing "Draggin' the Line", I will set the bass *way* up for the singer doing the background vocal.
Heck, when they do "Friends in Low Places", I sometimes play the eq like an instrument, boosting the bass only for "low places" and "social graces" etc.

Well he kept saying i sound like a girl. Now to me that sounds like the key was too high on the version i played. He said he sings a different version. So next time he gets a different version and i'll lower the key 5 steps. He'll sound like FROG MAN. ![LMAO LMAO](./images/smilies/emot-LMAO.gif)

And you say you have the best system in town; You don't seem to take your singer seriously. Or do I miss something, cos if I do then this thread has no place in the technical forum.

He kept trying to say it had something to do with the EQ settings. But to me it sounds like the key the song was in, was not what he was use to.
I kept trying to figure out what he meant. But his explanation wasn't jiving with his description. It's hard fix something that has nothing to do with EQ. And everything to do with the key. The song was over and i had to keep playing music. We talked during the next 5-6 singers, listening to my EQ adjustments of the other singers, as he kept trying to explain it in unexplainable terms. Ever time i changed the EQ setting he said no that's not it. So how much more can i do during a show? When everything i tried wasn't what he thought was the problem. I was pretty frustrated by it.

You are telling me that you were trying to get his eq setting right by adjusting the eq setting of 5 other singers?

No i was trying to determine what he was talking about. To try to achive the sound he wanted, i turned the bass up and down and backed off some treble during their songs. But no matter what i did he kept saying that wasn't it. Now if everything i did to the EQ didn't fix the problem or seems to make no difference, according to him, what would you do? He even said they all sounded like they were girls.
I still say it was the key the song was in. I think it was higher than the version he is use to. Because i couldn't get it to sound even close to what he thought it should. There is only so much adjustment on the channel EQ. Something should have made a little difference in the sound, to him.
Who knows, he may be a little  whacked. His truck is covered with bumber stickers. Not exactly normal... He probably brakes for squirrels, too.
The microphone i used all night didn't make me sound like a girl. (If only) Nobody else said they sounded like girls. He is the only person to ever say anything like that. Sooooo i'm leaning away from the system being at fault and more toward his brain or ears. Or just an unfamiliar version. Maybe he was embarrassed because his performance wasn't what he thought it should have been and i was a good scape goat. I'm taking it with a grain of salt.

The system CANNOT be at fault but the person behind the board can. And that is how it look like in this case. End of the story.

My girlfriend saw and heard the entire thing and she thinks he's nuts. That's my only consolation. I still say it was just because he wasn't use to this version, he screwed it up and blamed me.
I agree that the system wasn't doing anything it shouldn't have been doing.
I'm going to put him in the catagory of "there is one in every crowd that will never be satisfied no matter what you do."
