I can't look at YouTube links here at work.... they are blocked. (and I'll get reported, Lmao.. )
(true)
I've never heard of a cigar box banjo. Have seen & heard dulcimers made from cardboard boxes though.
Ollie, awww.... ya made me miss my calf Merle. :( I was planning on teaching him to dance like that:)

It doesn't sound funny, it sounds accurate !
Something need not be made by Stradivarius, or Kay, or Harmony to sound decent and be practical... One of the toughest things I tried Charmin was playing spoons, and a limberjack... Not easy.

Dulcimers, and psaltrys are pretty instruments, I guess they use both bowed, and hammered... Theres a really nice company that makes these instruments but out've nice wood... Forgot the name, have the older catalogs... Is it "Rocky Mountain" instruments, or appalachian ??? Something like that.. (Something) mountain ? as I vaguely recall, blue mountain ?? Dunno..
The banjo I posted sounds excellent, check it out at home
Isn't a wind up string instrument also a "Hurdy GUrdy" ?

Ollie, Here's the song done with a full orchestra..HAHAHAHA (sorry couldn't resist)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ao1d7CxzLh4
Or, a smaller duet playing in there swimming pool
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAb-oq8p ... re=related
(this IMHO is GORGEOUS rendition)
It's an old "Fiddlers" tune, wonder if Charmin knows it, if not she's gonna learn it now..
You know what I like about some of these tunes, and yes, very country jig-like, I like the drone notes played, similar to irish jigs and how bagpipes have the D drones... The drone string playing sounds really nice

That violin *Fiddle* the guy was playing in the rowboat... Not so sure I'd feel comfortable with a Gibson J-45 100 year anniversary edition. Same with the FIddle that close to water, I wouldn't want to risk getting those wet. Here's the same couple again, my question is "What's the point" in having nice isntruments that close to water ? I don't get it ? Guess cause it's different

Jigs sound very similar to me, it's tough for me to tell personally place of origin, old country jigs aren't anything I'm familiar with.. Regardless of whether they are Celtic, British, I can't tell.. I know nothing about Folk tunes.

HEHE, at one point musicians did, all derivations of nature at least up til the psychedelic genre in the 60's when they had to add MOD FX and morph nature
Here's what some fiddle players do:
use a drone tuning rather than the standard G,D,A,E violin tuning. So here you have two A strings.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bT8y2EvU ... re=related
So ADAE.. What's that ? D major tuning with the E as the added 9th for a drone that gives it that jig sound ?
If I knew about this tuning method in Jr High, I'd have gotten myself kicked out've the school orchestra even younger... ![LMAO LMAO](./images/smilies/emot-LMAO.gif) .. I like that stuff !!!
I'm listening to some of these folks playing folk tunes, and it's tough to tell whether or not the guitars are mixed before up loading this stuff, or whether I'm hearing just the acoustic sound of the instrument.. I suppose in order to JUST hear the acoustic sound it can't go thru a computer sound system, instead must be heard live.. Some of these instruments sound more chimey, and resonant than I thought they could..Hmmm.. probably mixed and UL, or acoustic-electric

Traditional violin tuning is the reverse of the bass strings Ollie. Rather than E-A-D-G. the Violin is G-D-A-E, as is Mandolin .

Haven't seen a thread yet that we can't properly spam when we set our minds to it... LMAO
(though this one was mostly Steven and Ollie)
Steven, I watched all those videos. Those instruments in the water? Lordie, yes, those people are taking a risk. And for what? I didn't even think it was cool.
But I enjoyed them... kinda made me wanna grab a set of kitchen spoons and play along. LMAO (haven't done that in a while actually, but that was my very first "instrument"... cause dad thought rythm was the most important thing to learn first... but it's common for one of us to still grab spoons when dad plays the fiddle) LMAO
Never heard that tune, but I like it. Although I babble about bluegrass, and it is my favorite to SING... my favorite songs for the fiddle are cajun and irish songs... takes some pretty fancy bow work to play a lot of the irish ones though. (and in cajun fiddling.. you rarely ever play single string, gives it that cool sound)
Don't you play? Pick up a Cajun fiddle song book and get to work Steven!!
