Speaking of things like empty barrels having a good sound.... Steven, you ever heard of or seen one of these?

Course, this guy doesn't know how to build one properly, but if made right, and played right, you really can't tell the diff between it and a regular upright bass:)

(met a guy at a bluegrass convention who was pretty awesome on one, never missed a note)

Hey Charmin and Steven! Fritz Richmond was a great washtub bass player that helped popularize the instrument in the 60's with the Jim Kweskin Jug Band and he played on recordings with the Grateful Dead, Jackson Browne and others. Fritz eventually landed in Portland and played around town with lots of local folkies. I saw him play a few times at the Laurelhurst Tavern. He sure knew how to get the intonation right on that thing! ha,ha It's very hard to do.

From what I've been hearing on the sites that have demo's it is in fact VERY hard to get a decent tone, or semi-accurate intonation out've that type instrument.  Many sound like percussion instruments that roughly hit the tone.
