In my limited karaoke experience let me explain myself...
In these past month, with my one job, i have worked very hard to build my crowd. And after 4 hard weeks, i would hate to lose the one singer because the bar owner did something stupid to Pi$$ him off.
WE all know bar owners can do stupid things that actually hurt their business more than help it.
Telling me how to run my show is one of them. If you let your bar owner dictate how it's gonna be, then he owns you. Holding up a show for any reason can cause singers to find other digs. That's bad business. Holding up a scheduled event (karaoke) for a non scheduled event (ballgame, darts, Miss America). They pay nothing to have the game on TV. And the return from the handfull of people that may be watching the game is very minimal compared to what i'm about to bring in. Not to mention they are PAYing me to be there. All of the people that will fill the bar are coming in to give the bar owner money. Way more money that the returns of the GAME. Business 101.
Tonight when i walked in the bar at 8:30, there was ONE person at the bar. (and she was a singer) It ended up very busy and i had 24 singers. I was the attraction, not the bar or anything about it.
You firing KJs that knew what they were talking about and you were not a KJ at the time (i'm assuming here) probably cost the bar owner money. With your EGO driven, i'm the boss attitude. No manager, bar owner or bartender knows more about my business than i do. They can not tell me what will work and what won't. If they think they do and can, they need their head examined. And some of their cockiness knocked out of them.
No bar owner and most KJs don't have half the knowledge or experience that i do. If they were so good why do they need entertainment to fill the bar? If the bar is the attraction, don't waste any money on DJs, KJs or bands, comedians or mud wrestlers or jukeboxes. Only problem is, i don't see that happening at any bar you can point your finger at. They need entertainment to survive their stupidness 99% of the time. The day a bar owner thinks he knows more about karaoke than i do, i quit. My reputation speaks for itself. They seek me out.
I am an expert with more experience KJing than most of them have owning the bar. I know more about running a bar than most bar owners. Every job i have at this moment, i have more experience than every owner. By at least 5-10 years. One of them it's 15 years. Brand new bar brand new owner. You think he's going to tell me anything i don't know? I forgot more about karaoke than he will ever know. HE hired me because he watched me for months at another bar, before he opened. The bar i have 14 years at. Longer than that owner too.
So maybe your bar owners can tell you a thing or 2, and control your show, but mine shouldn't even try. And if they think they have a bright idea, i can tell them 20 reasons against it. All they know is every week i show up they make a ton of money. If i don't show up they may as well be closed that night. If they have a replacement KJ they may as well be closed.
I'm not being cocky, i'm telling you the way it is. That's how i do.

I guess I was trying to exemplify our "in house expert" .. ![no ](./images/smilies/emot-shakehead.gif) , ![Wink ](./images/smilies/icon_wink.gif) !!
![wave ](./images/smilies/emot-wave.gif) sidewinder,
Me thinks :thinkin: you've said all the above concerning YOU (it's always about you, you, you, me, me , me, I, I , I :puke: ) in all your posts ![Rolling Eyes ](./images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif) . Maybe you could direct your "efforts" in responding to some one who takes you seriously. Unfortunately, for you, that won't happen on this forum  , and it's your own fault because of the attitude you continuously project ![Sad :(](./images/smilies/icon_sad.gif) .Why pose a question to members here, and then try to "slice and dice" those who, with honest intentions, share THEIR experiences and opinions on the subject ![Don't Know :dontknow:](./images/smilies/dontknow.sml.gif) ? Again, maybe you are "all that". Your opinion. Maybe you do have a high energy, high calibre show. We'll never know , you won't share it's location...your choice. If you did, would I show up? Probably.....long as I didn't have to fly. Who knows...you MIGHT be pleasently surprised.....as might I. So...IMO...there's little more that can be said in regards to what YOU think. It's all about credibility, attitude, and aptitude. Sorry my friend.. ![Sad :(](./images/smilies/icon_sad.gif) .you're falling a little short. Just an observation. So...excuse me while I grab a book, get my walker, go to my favorite park bench, and turn up my hearing aid so I can enjoy the sounds of nature. Much more enjoyable alternative than "listening" to you ![yes ](./images/smilies/emot-nod.gif) .
Donny "B" 8)
BTW; I DON'T consider you "cocky". Egotistical, self-centered, belligerent, self assuming, and post consuming.....YEP!!!! ![ROLF4 :rofl4:](./images/smilies/rofl4.sml.gif)

What YOU may want to consider is...
When a bar owner wants me to postpone the start of MY show he is messing with MY reputation.
When a bar owner wants me to cater to him or is friends or his private party and ignore regular customers that i have brought in and built, he is messing with MY reputation.
He is not paying me to ruin MY reputation. He is paying me to put on my show the way i do it. And that includes MY good reputation for fairness and starting on time. I don't appreciate that they think they can for a few dollars, dictate my behavior. And force me to look like an incompetent jerk. Like most of the competition.
Is YOUR reputation for sale to the lowest bidder?
His money buys my show and all that goes with it. The way i do it and want my reputation to be. Most of you could care less about your reputation or so it seems.
YOUR problem is YOU don't think about YOU or YOUR business enough to care. Because YOU are happy just to have work and it doesn't bother YOU one bit that YOU can be bought and sold. Just to stay working. I don't have that problem.

You all know so much about HOW to run a bar, why are none of you doing so? That's my question. You all have all the advice on what an owner should & shouldn't do with THEIR place of business, yet I don't think one of you actually OWN a bar that complain about stupid bar owners. Why not change that, buy a bar & show them how to do it right. How to bring people in. Show them what will keep customers there & spending. Make sure you shut off all the sports games that customers that have been there all night for spending watching, make they get the ending of their game cut off when karaoke starts, after all they don't make the money for the bar, it's the karaoke. There isn't anything else in the bar that actually makes money other than the karaoke.
You people think you know so much about the bar business, QUIT "whining"
about it & become a bar owner & run it the way you think a bar should be run since you all have the answers. I know what the response will be to this as well! Don't say you don't want the responsibilities or hassles (of dealing with idiot kj's who think they have the answers to all), or whatever else. If you wouldn't run a bar of your own, you have absolutely no right in telling a bar what they should & shouldn't do.

Sidewinder,
WHY do you seem to have ONLY one show if you're so good? YOU can't be making that much money on 1 gig a week. I'm sure you'll correct me if i'm wrong.
Do you have another kj job, or other secular job, or do you still live at home? Just asking...
WHEN you're doing 5 shows a week like i personally am currently making $1250 a week, or have 6 kjs working for you, then i'll take you a little more seriously.

Dang.....there I was, listening to the sounds of nature, all comfy on my park bench, with my copy of Karaoke Scene Magazine, and then....it happened ![Shocked ](./images/smilies/icon_eek.gif) !!!
I got this very LOUD and DISTURBING static through my earplug! The pain was intense!! The noise was unbearable! Then it hit me. I knew what was wrong ![yes ](./images/smilies/emot-nod.gif) .
Yes....the "in house expert" was extolling his virtues....AGAIN!!! I rushed home, ( as fast as possible with my walker ) trekked up three flight of stairs to the "man cave", ( stopping to catch my breath at each level ) booted up the computer, signed on to Karaoke Scene Forum, went to this posting and..VIOLA...same old same old.
He's still just full of ....... ![Talk :talk:](./images/smilies/emot-talk.gif) . Oh...just another observation. Tired now after all that. Gonna take a nap before I go to bed....duh!!

And YET the answer has still yet to be answered. So the whiners need to basically shut up & do your job for which the bar owners hire you for!

OK, you play songs that contain every swear word. The bar owner doesn't like it. You continue to play them or stop playing them, to kiss his butt?
You do not play songs with swear words but the owner wants you to. You start playing them or not, to kiss his butt?
You do not play favorites with the rotation. The bar owner wants you to. You start playing favorites to kiss his butt or not?
You play favorites with the rotation and the bar owner wants you to stop. You start running a fair rotation or not to kiss his butt?
You want to start your show on time every night. The owner wants you to start after the game, dart game, Miss America. You start when he wants you to start to kiss his butt.
In essence he is asking you to run the show his way, contrary to what you know is right and good for business. So to keep working you let him run your show and reputation to kiss his butt?
As the bars reputation goes so does your and vice versa. You can kill each other or you can help each other. Stupid mistakes on either part will hurt you both.
I for one will not let a bar owner that barely can run his business, make decisions about my business. I don't need my "one" job that bad.

There is one excellent example of a smart bar owner and it comes from one of the Moderators on here.
Lonmans 7 night a week job. If i owned a bar it would be karaoke 7 nights a week.
He realised what he had in a good KJ and took the opportunity to run on Lonmans back. He has made a lot of money from that decision. Prorbably doing better than most bars across the country as far as steady unfluctuating income. Bands are hit and miss depending on their talent level. And they are limited to Fridays and Saturdays, basically.
Karaokes unique ability to work on any night is the key. Yes you can maybe take in more money on a band night but what happens the rest of the week? Usually nothing. Most bars around here only book karaoke one night a week. They don't understand the money potential from karaoke every night. I do. I see it night after night. Nobody books a band on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday or even Wednesday or Thursday. The bars are open all these nights. Any bar owner that isn't riding the karaoke wave for all it's worth is an idiot. Lots of potential money is going down the drain.
