Well, the KJ announced on Wednesday that there will be no more karaoke as "Guitar Hero" would be the entertainment from next week.

When you consider how much less it would be to set up as a Guitar hero jockey as opposed to KJ, I wonder if this is going to be the new trend!

 Murrlyn,
Interesting. Is this "Guitar Hero" going to play songs that people can grab a mic too and sing along, or is HE the entire entertainment for the evening. Meaning, he sings, does a little  "who did this song" ( if you give the correct answer...free drink ) stuff like that? A very good friend of mine could be termed a "Guitar Hero". His name is Jim Plunkett ( not the football player ) and if you "google" his name, you can check out his web site to get an idea of what I mean. Some of the places he plays have karaoke and bands on the nights he doesn't. He's just another example of "the older guy" appealing to all age groups. Just my opinion, but I think every type of entertainent has "room" for the other due to what types of people enjoy  specific types of entertainment and go to those venues that they feel are being specific to what they enjoy. Now this particular bar you talked about.....what other types of entertainment do they have....and is it possible it was a owners decision based on strictly (usually) $$$$$$..? Meaning...the guitar guy plays for less than the KJ? Is this guitar guy well known in the area? Were people  ( regulars ) upset enough to tell the owner, and support the KJ?  Sorry if it seems I'm rambling..just that I'm sure these points and others to be posted would come into the "equation". Just my  :2cents:

It may kill lousy karaoke but the good KJs won't have to worry about it or poker or darts.

Guitar hero is a popular musical video game where you "play guitar" with a song being played on the video game system. the giutar is a plastic toy that has like 5 buttons for frets. I bought my kids "rockstar" it has the guitar plus drums and a mic for up to three players.
Our thurs gig had talked about replacing there upstairs DJ (its a 2 story bar) on thurs with Guitar hero, however they got a good DJ for a good price so they are sticking with him.

I think it will be a fad but won't replace karaoke. With most shows, you have 15-20 people who will stay the whole night to sing 4-5 songs if they're lucky. With G/H, I've seen kids not want to give up the instrument at all - how long will it take before people say, Hey, we'll just stay home and play where there are no rules, no one will tell us how long we can play, etc. I envision that there will be places that will decide to host these outings, figure out that they don't sell as much booze or food as during karaoke, and when the participants thing they're not getting to play enough, they'll quit coming. It'll be hardcore group of people who are wannabe real musicians that will persevere but in the end, it'll fade.

On the flip side, maybe the places that have had 'krappyoke' before and decided it didn't work, will try G/H and make it work. At our Mon night gig they have free XB360 and most nights it isn't even being played anymore.

Guitar Hero is something I know nothing of either however a buddy who manages a music store in Boston has a large screen at least given it's novelty, this virtual arcade appearing game seems to be of some interest BUT wouldn't you think "Guitar Hero" given the concept (and it's title) would draw more of a younger MALE crowd ?   How many females want to stand around wailing on a plastic button guitar acting out being wannabe Jimmy Hendrix phases ?   Wouldn't most that aren't young, into arcade-like games, and female wish to sing instead IN REAL?  I just don't see a similarity, yet I know nothing about it so I'm going to shut up and see if I can find kids participating on You Tube  with Guitar Hero.. Regarding poorer quality Karaoke, one would think it's very self-limited anyway even without competition.  Doesn't seem a necessity and I'd think the bar owner/management wouldn't see revenue generated so opt for just a jukebox, or anything other than poor karaoke (which IMHO is a crowd killer, and business is tough for many bars to being with)

Five button guitar ?   How is that fun ?   Anyway... Better shutup and read up LOL

ahem...well this female (who isn't even very young as you well know) used to fight with her 2 sons for turns with guitar hero until they got a 2nd guitar...now they humor me and let me play along sometimes... LMAO

it's a veryyyy addicting, very fun game and my kids and their friends get a kick out of watching me play as long as i don't hog the game (it's been known to happen)...

quite a few links came up when i googled it....

Well, Stevie Ray Vaughn's *Pride and Joy* is what got me hooked. Dang, but I couldn't put the game down until I got the highest score on that song. LMAO
(and the scores of my son & his teen friends was pretty dang hard to beat, Lol)

It's tons of fun. Nothing like really playing guitar. Actually, IMO, if you do play guitar, the easier levels make it tougher... cause you're expecting/wanting more lead notes to be there that are not. (it's almost like you're playing a bass part, not the lead)

But fun? Heck yeah. And addicting too. Our local bar was asking a few weeks ago if any of us would be interested in a guitar hero night- but on a different night from karaoke... I don't think they'd ever "replace" it.

Watch this:
(this person misses lots of notes tho)
The moving keyboard is what you play off of.

Of course it's been a generation since Disco died,  perhaps Disco will make a comeback, and DJ's will return.. It's affordable entertainment.. who knows ?  Sounds crazy but trend and fad can be ridiculous without rhyme or sound reason.. All a few commercial stations have to do is start shifting urban slowly back towards Ohio Players,  BT Express,  Parliament, Cool and The Gang, get people tapping their feet reintroduce shuffle dance styles back,  throw some Blondie, and the Waitresses, ABBA in, Funk style such as  The Staple Singers, Jimmy Castor Bunch, God Forbid Donna Summer and KC and the SS Band, some Earth Wind and FIre, The Spinners, and Disco will be back.. One thing about Disco, love it or hate it, It was great dance music BUT with less alcohol consumed today away from home than a generation ago at bars, and the drinking age being 3 years older that "get down" stuff might not work as well... So things might be tougher regardking letting loose these days.....Seems any return of most styles/ fads pre-karaoke (with the exception of live musicians) would be affordable entertainment..  Change is often cyclical..

It's anyones guess..

Guitar Hero personally wouldn't appeal to me but it gives me an interesting idea for an interactive A/V Guitaroke game for actual guitar players using a VERY large screen and a CAM

need to research something

I doubt video games would pose a threat to Karaoke. Around here they've always existed alongside it. Video games aren't as interactive. Karaoke is also more realistic, more entertaining  -compared to what I've seen online watching GuitarHero and the selection of music is far more vast with Karaoke..Karaoke isn't an electronic "toy", it's also not a "game". It's more sophisticated and dimensional when done well.  The Karaoke singer is actually singing.. The guitar player in Guitar Hero isn't playing guitar..

To me this is analogous to lip synch singing replacing Karaoke... I think not

I actually seen guitar hero for the first time in a lounge (casino lounge) last week.  I was talking to the bartender about it & they said it has become one of their more popular extra curricular activities.  There were people actually signed up & waiting to play it & they are thinking of making it into a money contest on a regular basis as it is drawing alot of attention - fad? i'm pretty sure, but right now it is THE fad.  My kid has it & plays it & the one thing I like about it is it uses alot of classic rock from the 70's to the 90's & teaches them alot of what they might not be familiar with normally.  I hear more about this game in the last few months than I have about anything else.  Actually had a 'gal' last night sing a song BECAUSE of this game as a suicide, she loved the song & sang it.  Could be something to look into for those clubs that aren't 'pure' karaoke.  I her of a lot of girls yelling when a classic rock song comes up - I NAIL this in guitar hero, it isn't JUST for guys!

If you yourself have or you have heard anyone learning to play any instrument, it can be way more painful than someone trying to sing.   It will never even come close to the popularity of karaoke.   And besides that, how many people will actually want to learn how to play in front of a crowd.     Worries at all.

as stated before I bought rockband for my kids.its a lot like guitar hero but it has drums guitar and vocals. its a pretty cool deal for well under $200. I bought it thinking it would improve there interest in rock music, and would be a jump start for them to real music. oddly the guitar normaly lays dormant while the drums and vocals are played. as a (pretty poor) bass player I found what was mentioned above to be true. also the timing HAS to be exact to the screen...problem is its like a lot of karaoke tracks and not dead on to the music...guess what, I "missed" alot of notes caues I follow the music. my step son got a real guitar for his birthday last nov. he plays with that waaay more than he does with rock band. I thought rockband would help him when I bought it, but found out it would not so im glad he doesnt play it. his sister wants to play drums (I was also a drummer in school) she INSISTS on holding the sticks in a fist and using her wrists for movement. tryed showing he the right way, but its too late. I wish the game would at least teach them good habits so that if they do want to really play they dont have to un learn.
