Does anyone know the brand "Pyle?" Are their speakers any good?  If I'm forced to economize; that is, I'm not going to buy Peaveys or Bose, what would you recommend?
I'm looking to add two speakers to my existing system for a couple of larger venues that I have my fingers crossed about.  Thanks in advance for your input.

They aren't a very good speaker sound wise, very tinny in the highs & not a lot of bottom end.  The cabinets are pretty chincy.
What kind of budget are you looking at?  Speakers are the worst things to skimp on, get the best you can & then make sure your amp can push them properly as to not blow them.

If you're going to buy cheap speakers I suggest Madison over any other I have played with.  Bottom and top are very clean but the mid-range is weak.  If you EQ the heck out of them I don't think they're bad at all.

Peavey PR-12s are only $169 apiece. They handle 400W program.

For the real budget-conscious, look at the MTX TP112. It really sounds great. It can't handle a ton of power -- 150-200W program -- but that fits a lot of smaller powered mixers.

my opinion of PYLE has always been that they were a pile.  recently I have heard a couple pair of them sound "ok" for them to sound "ok" they had to  have a sub, and still did not sound good. they are better suited to a DJ than A Kj. IMO peavey makes pretty much junk too, but better than Pyle. I did once have a pair of SP4s (sounded ok but heavy as hell). I traded them off 2 years ago, and the last 3 months everytime i go into the store i traded them in at I see them sitting waiting for back ordered parts.

give a look at SONIC. they are not overly expensive and make good cabs. stock drivers are not great, but can be updated later

Thing is with Peavey, they are power hungry, put the proper power behind them & they can actually kick (@$%&#!)!

I have not heard or used Pyle Speakers.  I have in the past used the Yamahas SV115  and also Peavey SP5G both GREAT Bass thumping Clean sounding Speakers.
Both in the $300+ per speaker ranger  - NOT LITE WEIGHTS !!

recently I have just purchased 2 - Behringer B1520 (15")pro cabinets.  $249 Ea.
They are again  NOT LITE WEIGHT but clean sounding, with a thumping bass sound. I would consider them right up there with the other 2 I have used before.

As you say if your are FORCED to economize the Behringers are a decent choice and will be able to handle any job you may come across ( if you don't mind hauling a 60+lb speaker.

I also use the B1520 for my outdoor gigs. I drive them with an EP2500 amp and they do put out the sound. I have help transporting them, since I am getting to the point I am not willing to risk my back on that stuff. You do need a bit of power for them, though -- my PMH3000 drove them but barely.

For smaller places, I use a combination of Peavey PR-10 tops and a PR-Sub. The tops are 18 pounds each, and the sub only 28 pounds. They put out some pretty good sound for that amount of weight and bulk. The EP2500 drives them in mono, and I use a Samson Servo 180 for the monitor speaker.

There's a band in my area that uses Behringer speakers (I don't know the model but it's their top line) and they sound pretty decent I think. If you've got to go cheap that's as good as any route. But stay away from their powered stuff... both speakers and box mixers because of reliability issues.

Cruise you local Craigslist and see what's out there used. Often even lightly used things are half what they are new. There's nothing wrong with Peavey SP2's other than weight. They're kickass. Yamaha Clubs aren't bad either (not their subs though). You might luck out and find JBL MPros (the 4's are fantastic) because some users are switching over to the new JBL  lightweights. PDX CL is very active and I've picked up a lot of cool stuff from there.

I have a PMH3000 which is now two years old and has been used daily. I have a pair of B212A, also used daily by my running mate. I also know pros who use them. They may not be quite as reliable, but at the price they are not bad.

Behringer's support is very good, as is the support of the suppliers I buy from (MF/GC and ZZounds) so if you do have an issue you can get it resolved quickly. I had a PHM518 blow on me, and had a replacement unit within 3 days.

I had a friend whose Behringer box mixer lost a side after a couple of months. A bass player who had his Behringer bass amp give out in six. Personally , I have a Behringer EP2500 power amp (out of warranty) with a fuzzy side.

It will cost more to fix it than it's worth... $250 was the estimate.  I should never have bought it. All my power amps are QSC and Yamaha. I just thought for the price I'd try it out.

Mckyj57 I'm glad your box mixer is trouble free. But it does seem that buying Behringer is more of a crapshoot than other brands when it comes to their electronics. Their unpowered speaker cabinets seem to be more reliable though.

My anecdotal evidence is more relevant than yours! 8-)

Seriously, though, we have reports here of all kinds of gear going out. I have an EP2500, a MDX1600, a PMH3000, two EQ1502s, two CX3400, and a PMH518. Not a problem with any of them. I did have a V-Verb that would not work, and that PMH518 that crapped out. Each was instantly replaced, and I returned the V-Verb for credit.

If you look at alt.audio.pro.live-sound, you will find gigging SR people who swear by Behringer EP2500 and DEQ2496 units and Behringer mixers.

You pay less for Behringer, and you probably in some ways get less. But there are lots and lots of people using them successfully. Most importantly, they have warranties and Behringer does an excellent job of honoring them. Look at the recent reports here of Mackie SRM450 speakers going out and difficulties getting Mackie to do something about it. That simply wouldn't happen with Musician's Friend and Behringer -- it would be replaced instantly.

G/C doesn't take anything back - and I bought my sub through Sameday Music.  None of these companies take anything back (or VERY VERY RARELY) - you usually have to go through warranty providers. So often the problem lies with the warranty providers. My sub pooped out and I took it 25 miles to the sound guy, he had it fixed and returned to me in 2 days, no cost to me other than fuel to get it there and back.

One of my 15-inch Bag Ends blew one of the speaker components. Bag End (for those unfamiliar with them) are at the top of the heap for quality. They had me take apart the speaker, send the culprit, and within a week I had the replacement piece...

Had to have a cordless SM58 switch replaced - sent it to them, had it back within 10 days, new guts, new switch, etc. Cost me $75 but it is essentially new.

I did have to take a Mackie board in to the Mackie facility (which happenened to be very near us originally - not so anymore)  - one of the channels was acting up. They handed me a new board without question, and in fact as I recall, upgraded me to the next one up.

When you're dealing with electronics, equipment that gets used and moved a lot, it's always a crapshoot. It is so nice when people stand by their warranties and repair sooner than later, though.

,

Personally, I've been using SONIC speakers for years (SM-15). I've only had to replace a tweeter twice on (mic feedback both times) them in over, I think, 18 years now. Crisp highs, and enough low so you can "feel" the music without it being
"overpowering". Just my  :2cents: .

I dunno. I am using pyle pro 10's without subs and have gotten rave reviews from my crowd on how good they sound. Must be the user lol.  The bass end sounds as good as the EV's that a buddy of mine used to use, he's now out of the business.

Anyone know anything about the Pyle Pro subwoofers? I've seen some 15" on ebay for dirt cheap, but I don't want to throw my money away on muddy or weak bass. One thing that concerns me is the internal crossover is 800hz which seems kind of high to me.

They're dirt cheap for a reason.  Not that great of a driver.

Thought I'd better jump in finally and thank you all for the feedback.  I'm still racking my brain, but as always your information is helpful and much appreciated.
