I'm pickin' your quite right Croaky! But it's a fact that the Wednesday night karaoke at the Old Mill is no longer... it is now Wednesday night Guitar Hero... yep. there is one place GH HAS replaced karaoke!

Again I can see it as a possible add on to a slower karaoke night, but can't see it replacing with any kind of lasting effect.
Have you went in to see it at all since you left? Is it busy or just a few people in the bar playing or ????? That's going to be the final call. Chances are they will bring karaoke back or have it intermixed with GH - IF it is generating any interest.

What about your no song repeat rule?
I'll pass on the GH wasting any time at my shows.
Not one "sing"le note.

I can see GUITAR HERO having it's run at certain venues that cater to a younger male crowd. NOT TO SAY THAT OLDER AND FEMALES can't wail on GH. It's just a matter of demographics . GH (and all video games) main audience is younger males. Could be FUN to have available in addition to Karaoke --maybe someone doesn't want to sing but wants to show their stuff pushing the little buttons to the music. ---I can see the SINGERS getting mad already !!!!!
The real Karaoke Killer will be ---
complacency - SHows that are STALE and lake excitement
bad sound and or bad selection
egotisical KJ's who think the show is THEM
STUPID and DUMB Bar Managers who have no business sense
BAD and RUDE Bar STAFF can kill a show.....
KJ's who don't consider the BIG picture when hosting ( keep them all happy and drinking ..not just the singers---singers first but non singers are important )

No Lonman, I have not been back. The reason I was going to the bar was because of the karaoke. I am not interested in GH. The bar management made the decision to substitute GH for karaoke rather than have GH on a different night. When and if I see that the bar is advertising karaoke once again will be the time I will consider returning.

Well I was mainly getting at, how busy is it now compared to karaoke. You should pop in one night just to see, then let the owner know that you want to sing & head to the next bar with karaoke!

Why would a bar owner ruin a good money making karaoke night and change it to a GH night? That shows how stupid they are. He could have parleyed it in to 2 good nights one of karaoke and one of GH, if it ends up being good. If not he killed 2 nights of making money.
His bar manager must be 15 years old.

I just had a bar manager get in touch with me asking If I'd DJ and host GH on Thursday nights. They have Karaoke on Fri & Sat, have had it for years, but are thinking of ditching it and switching to bands. The manager said they lose money on karaoke nights cuz all the regulars sit there all night getting free refills on soda and not buying alcohol. So, They may eliminate karaoke all together.
I'm considering the gig, as long as I'd get paid the same $150. Eventually, if they replace the weekend karaoke with bands, I may end up hosting karaoke on Thursdays.
So yes, I'd say GH is currently a valid threat.

Where are you at? Our karaoke nights more than pay for themselves - no free refills, minimum charge per person...and the heavy drinkers more than make up for the tee-totalers. I convinced a couple of places that they don't serve water in glasses or pitchers - they sell bottled water.
I can't imagine GH displacing karaoke in any of the places we work at or even go to sing at, though there is abundant Krappyoke in this area and it wouldn't be an altogether bad thing if they were ousted in place of GH. I don't know anyone that would go and play out of all the people I know who karaoke. Maybe an all-ages venue would score, but again, I hosted kid's shows for years, starting in '97 and they end up being financial nightmares because nobody buys anything.
Be interesting to have this conversation in a year.

Someone brought guitar hero to my Christmas party. I also have a very nice karaoke system. Singing was still the favorite.

If they give away free drinks all night it won't matter if it's karaoke or GH or strippers. No income is no income. All will die. Slap the bar owner upside the head and wake him up. Or find another bar that charges for drinks.
Let's see...if i had the choice to drink free all night or pay all night...what would i do????? Free nightly entertainment is better than paying for it.
Kiss that bar goodbye because he won't weather the gas price storm that's on the horizon.
He's killing the bar, not the karaoke crowd. LMAO LMAO  IDIOT

There is an ad about the new GH on tour. (2008) It's a hand held thing that looks like a box. Not a guitar and it has teenagers playing with it. Last time i looked there were no teenagers at my karaokes. They aren't allowed in the bar and i wouldn't turn my karaoke show over to teeny boppers. The adults will never stay around for Romper Room and babysitting.

When the bar is doing $1500 -$2500/night a few freebies is not going to affect either business one way or the other. Properly given it is another way of PR. I have sang in bars for years did not drink and have had waitresses hug me at last call.
If I was doing a gig and the bar showed any discrimination towards a singer of ours I would leave. I have had homeless sing at my shows and bought them a meal. Most bar owners a very sharp business owners and know how deal with people. The ones that make the difference are the mngrs and staff that deals with the public on a constant basis. If you look in the photography thread the hot gal in shorts is one of our waitresses. We are currently turning a small bar into another karaoke institution because we have open communication and have the same goals.
With certain attitudes here I really dont know how you get gigs, keep them or get those $2500 z tapes like we do on a constant basis. Everybody wants to run a bar but a smart owner or mngr will listen to reg customers opinions. We are in a big recession right now and many small bars are hurting with over regulation and money problems but we will survive. And I will continue to provide one of the best karaoke systems and the best host I have ever known.

First off, :O Guitar Hero is marketed towards teenagers. No bar even allows teenages to be there without a parent or guardian.
If they like Guitar Hero they are going to be very immature adults.
So how is that being pessimistic? :headscratch:
Is that the crowd you attract at your karaoke?
:beermates: Come on give old Sidewinder a great big :handshake: :grouphug: :biggrinthumb:
Karyoker is absolutely correct. You will lose your good karaoke crowd over the head of a "teenager game" and audience. Talk about pop drinkers. Please pass the Koolaid.
