I would like those of you that run a karaoke show to weigh in on this subject. What limits, if any, do you set on what songs/lyrics/language can be sung in your shows. There are some songs out there with really disgusting lyrics, foul language, and downright pornographic. What is your opinion?

In my club they restrict any song with language, being just one time in a song or throughout - which dissallows most hip hop & hard core rock/metal (though not all). If it's just once in the song & I know someone will edit themselves, it's my discretion to allow them to sing it. Otherwise pretty much anything else goes.
We used to allow everything, main reason the bar stopped it was we were getting more problems per night/week due to college aged kids, drinking a pitcher between an entire table, singing the f-bomb songs & starting fights during the night. Our owner & manager decided to have me pull all of those songs with language content (hey they were paying really well), I did argue that we'd lose customers - and we did, we lost the problem customers. What I didn't expect was a better class of 'singers' that 'spent' more and rarely any problems anymore. I quit arguing after that.

As most of you know there are no language restrictions at my place. So far we haven't had the problems Lonman had. This group - as a group - spends more than their elder counterparts, and the fights have all been not here but downtown.
What concerns me the most when we have a night as sloppy as last Thurs (re other thread) is if I start losing the really good singers. I don't know the answer to that yet. All I know is that right now this place is making a lot of money doing it the way it is. So that's the way it will be for now.
And I don't know how I could change it at this point. How am I going to pull songs out like "You Oughta Know" - sung by the whole room?
This is they way I found this room BTW. The guy who put this whole place together had a mouth you wouldn't believe and swore (literally!) that there would never be any language restrictions in his place. It's always been the only local bar without a cuss jar.
