There have been many threads here on what songs to allow. In this neck of the woods no regulation is necessary.. Bars even larger clubs here are social gathering places where friends and families party together. If somebody has their mom out to dinner or if somebody had some kids there is not even cussing in the bar. I personally have known some  bar owners around here for 40 years.

So I start this thread partly in jest but mainly to see the radical reactions we get. We are currently starting a karaoke tradition or a bar that is known for karaoke. One of the owners fiances sings The Pussycat Song by Connie Vannett as one of the traditions. People hearing it for the first time even little old ladies go nuts and clap and laugh. It is very popular.. It is usually in third rotation when it is done.

Would it be allowed in your venue?

I allow people to say anything but the n word.

It's the only thing I have found that people truely find offensive.

Everything goes....I do however trying to be well aware of songs that might contain offensive, especially early in the night...and limit or eliminate them till later in the evening.  The pussycat song, I wouldn't consider to even be in the questionable pile....MrD

We allow everything late, no swear words if kids are there. I have no say in it, but there are few problems because basically it is a bunch of people in a small town who have  known each other all their lives. If some boy or girl really misbehaves,  someone will tell their granny on them.

Yes, cussing is allowed at my gigs, if it is OK with the person paying me.

Is that a morals thing?   Or just because it's profanity in general.

Can it be in print?   Do they sell X-rated stuff and just keep the swearing off the radio?

I usually tell the singers to please not swear on the mic unless the words on the screen tell them to! Sometimes they listen sometimes they don't. Doesn't really matter- it's a late show and only adults allowed in. The "N" word is used in rap/hip hop songs occasionally and noone seems to get offended.
85% of our singers are 22-28 year olds and crave attention- they sometimes strip as well!

Yeah. In my case it was the club that set the policy, not me.  When I started there the group that was asking me to do karaoke in this room just wanted a place with more contemporary material. This group does not do Tenacious D, 2 Live Crew, etc. Those were additions made by requests from others who came later, many of whom knew that there were no language restrictions in this place.

I'm not a prude, lord knows I have my *moments* when I can't control my tongue.... but some forms of cursing seem a bit tacky in songs.

Raunchy, adult content- no problem with those, they're funny...  but a bunch of f-bombs.... just, in my opinion, fail to sound "musical" somehow;)

I think if it is included in the song - after 10pm is fine .

Our Monday night gig is a 'diaper bar' - 21 to 30 year olds - but also lots of regulars who are there just to sing and put on a good show. Once in a while the youngsters will sing something that might be full of expletive deletives but thankfully not often. It is de rigeur there to sing those kinds of songs but not so much at other gigs. Funny thing is, a minute after they're done singing, who even remembers what they sang? Especially if they are marginal singers. I think the less attention given to them the better. Maybe their own 'gang' might cheer them on but pretty well everyone else in the place ignores them - like someone noted earlier, time for a trip to the bathroom or outside to smoke or make a phone call.

I did have a gig where it was specifically prohibited, by my choice, as it was a classier place - the odd time the hooligans might come in - those kids who had been drinking somewhere else all night and thought they could come in and entertain everyone. I would just keep my hand on the mic volume and as soon as it started (cussing) I'd pull the slider down and presto! No volume. They'd turn around, look at me with a look on their face like 'what's going on?' I'd just look at them and ask if they could expand their vocabulary just a little and stick to the words on the screen. I'd suggest that they were in a room of grownups who weren't impressed by that sort of language and they'd finish off their song and slink off into the other part of the bar or out the door.  I would spot them when they came in (you couldn't help but notice them as they were loud and rude) and figure I'd have to deal with them quickly before they had a negative impact. I would occasionally be approached by those same kids at another time and they were so busy apologizing about their behavior on their last visit, and could they please sing again ... this time without the cussing ... Of course I allowed it.

Funny, or maybe not so funny, is the fact that if you do a kids' show, the kids seem to know instinctively the songs that are full of cussing...and every single time I'd turn them down...they couldn't figure it out. I guess they figured a song would allow them to cuss because it was a song.  

I fail to understand the message in a song full of cussing. What's the point exactly? No need for it...

Funny, it's not babysitting to me - it is being successful in the art of professional hosting - yah, you have to have an increased tolerance for some people sometimes. I have learned to suppress my own intolerance, smile, deal with them forcefully yet pleasantly, and everyone gets along just fine. Sign of a great show - a mix of people, all interacting and enjoying each other's performances.

As for the drunks, well heck they come in all ages - it is not something only the kids do sadly. Nothing worse than an over-the-hill dude who has forgotten how to shave, telling me he can sing Frank Sinatra better than Frank did. Treat him with an equal amount of respect and tolerance, direct him to his chair or to the door...no fuss, no muss, and a happy customer who comes back next time and spends his money there.

I do not limit the attendees at my shows, nor do I design my shows, for a specific group of people. It does take more talent and energy to deal with all ages, and to me when I am not able to do that anymore, it'll be time for me to get out of the business, and go to work at al old folk's home for my room and board.
