That's another reason I don't use a laptop.

I have SFF Dell desktop and LCD Keyboard Server tray mounted in a 4 space Gator rack case. All wiring is internal except the sound and video.

Take a look:

Dennisgb - I've thought of doing something similar to your computer setup since I have a few of the Dell Optiplexes (small form factor) sitting around at work collecting dust. How do you have the Dell mounted in the 4u rack? Do you have a picture of the actual rack that you wouldn't mind sharing?

((snip))It costs more $, takes time to load, but you get what you pay for- quality, reliability, and a machine that won't regularly crash on you, or have someone crash into IT and and the whole shabang falls on the floor in pieces. You can also download songs on-the-spot into the machine whenever you want them. Cavs is windows-based- (fyi)((END snip))
Okay, the thing that CAVS systems likes to do is talk about the stability and ruggedness... In over twelve years of being a KJ, I've never ONCE had a system crash on me. I've never ONCE had anybody crash into my system... and I wouldn't trust a pc that said that they were "crash resistant" or whatever that meant for shock absorbion.

((end rant!)) LOL

Yeah...okay....if you say so Knightshow.

I've seen many a few laptops end up on the floor due to not being secured in rigs.
Also witnessed many bugs and viruses that prevented startups, loose connections that prevented anything at all from happening, and kicked out plugs that sent whole units to their deaths!

My point is ruggedness because they're rack-mounted with screws inside a wooden rig, have a protective thick metal case, and CHECK THIS...NOT 15 cables and wires dangling out of it!! LMAO  LMAO

END RANT ALSO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CAVS is nothing more than a compact computer chassis & yes is based on a Windows platform.

Nice setup Dennis. And thanks for the links on touchscreens!

TTowntenor, you are correct. My rant was based on witnessing a hundred MORE laptop kjs than desktop jocks. I'm not knocking computerized shows, of course not, but the cheapo laptops aren't worth risking a job with in my opinion, because of the inferior cases and inability to fix a lot of problems on the spot- like you can with a desktop. (if you know what you're doing)

I don't mind admitting my lack of deep computer knowledge ( i couldn't build one from scratch or have the patience to), so i bought what was professional, rugged, and easy to use.

I do have a cheapo laptop, but that's for home use. To even think of using it at a show makes me laugh, even though it has a lot more songs in it.

A laptop is as good as the KJ running it.

Hi

I noticed your post about touch screen karaoke system and would like to know if you have any ideas on software/hardware I can use for a touch screen system for my upcoming private room karaoke business. We will have about 15 rooms each with their own karaoke set up that people can rent by the hour.

The difficulty is that to replace the songbooks we need 2, 3, 4 or more touchscreen terminals in each room.

My idea so far is to have a central server which holds all the songs. In each room I would then have a client PC which would have karaoke player software, which would output the music and video to a wide-screen TV.

To connect the touchscreens I am thinking of using Ncomputing's Xtenda , which would create up to three virtual PCs which would be connected to each touchscreen.

I would prefer to be able to use some kind of existing jukebox software on this system, but I think I'll probably have to make my own using Flash or HTML. The cuistomer would then use the jukebox software to queue songs onto the client PC, which would retreive them from the server and play them in order.

I would probably use 8 inch screens for the interface to save space and to keep costs down. Some thing like this: http://www.xenarc.com/product/700tsv.html  Do you know of a small touchscreen thatcan be controled from a mouse port? The Xtenda system does not have a USB connection and this monitor has no mouse port :(

Do you think the above system could work and what problems would you forsee?

Thank you for your help. I look forward to your reply.
