If you have ever been outside your home areas and to other shows around the country, you would see that a large MAJORITY of karaoke shows are done at small bars and restaurants and do not have ONLY karaoke singers there waiting in line to sing. NOT every karaoke place is packed with people wanting to sing right outta of the gate.
Most of these kjs have to ad lib when they don't have enough singers, change the entertainment game to get the crowds' attention, and find out what is appealing to that nights' audience. i've witnessed magician-kjs in myrtle beach SC that were hilarious and totally amped up the crowd.
If it means having someone play a guitar, bongo drums, tambourine, or whatever...if it appeals to that crowd that night- so be it.
The LAST hour of my show on sunday was slow- Spring Break is over for the kids, so a few musicians from San Francisco played their trumpets ALONG WITH a karaoke track (groovy kind of love and careless whisper) and the crowd really enjoyed it.
For our place that is always busy with karaoke- the bartenders and managers liked the change of pace. I invited one guy back tomorrow to play guitar.
You gotta be flexible sometimes and remember you are paid to entertain. If karaoke IS ALL YOU CAN DO (sw) of course you''re not gonna be comfortable not having any "back up skills". Most professionals DO HAVE BACK UP SKILLS.

I see nothing wrong with the host wanting to do their own original songs. And I've been to a few hosts shows where they do that! Playing an instrument along with it can be a problem, so I would tend to want them to bring in a cd with the instrumentals already on it.

It starts with a guitar, the someone wants to do a comedy routine then, some wannabe rapper wants to to his thing. Next thing you have is an out of control free for all and it doesn't even resemble a karaoke night anymore. Are you a KJ or some great wannabe multi-talented one man band/entertainer?
It ain't about you, remember?
It's KARAOKE. All of the above things are not.
No wonder karaoke is dieing. It's being killed by a bunch of wannabe KJs.
Your shows sound more like a circus, American Idol and the Gong show all in one.

I used to have a professional CONGA DRUM player who would play congas to the dance music or certain of the karaoke songs. He would sing once in awhile also But his playing was very unobtrusive and blended with the music instead of taking it over. Ive been to a Karaoke place where the host had this CLARINET player who insisted on playing along all the time---IT WAS VERY VERY DISTRCTING and really did NOT add to the musical prestntaion. Now MY FAVORITE place to go the KJ is a professional sax player and will back you with live sax--now THAT is REALLY COOL--specially on tunes such as James Brown "I FEEL GOOD" or "PAPA"s GOT A BRAND NEW BAG". He also once a night gets up and sings one TEJANO TEX-MEX song and plays sax with it----one of his dad's songs that they used to play when he toured with his dad's band POLLY CHAVEZ Y SUS CORONADOS. And its a crowd favorite to dance to. His show's signature song. In that case it really works well and the crowd loves having him play behind them. But in other cases it just doesent seem to work.

We have a friend who is a professional horn player - amazingly good, was asked by Doc Severinson at one point to play with his band. He comes in once in a while and asks if he can accompany me - It is just thrilling because he knows where to play in the song, how loud to play, and when to hang back. He's the kind of player that leaves you wanting more - you just wish he'd play a little more, you know that kind?
Some of the really top quality pro singers would ask him to play behind them, too. He is always very obliging and a consumate professional. He would never presume that someone who would him to accompany them. They'd have to ask him.

Is it worth taking the chance to ruin your show?
Not to me. A good karaoke host (KJ) can make the karaoke night by knowing how to run the equipment and having a good system and a nice song selection. No gimmicks and carnival side show acts. Just real good quality karaoke. The singers appreciate it. They make my show what it is. I'm the conductor, they are the show talent. It's a total night of singing, nothing more. Don't need anything else. I have very talented singing crowds. They can keep the rest of the bar very entertained.
I do have a guy that is a great singer. When he comes he brings a tambourine. I have seen some angry looks shot at him while he plays it during other people's songs. He doesn't do it every song, just some. I think it still can cause some minor issues. Sometimes it goes over well and other times... If i had my choice....i would rather it stayed at home.

oh I walked out of a show during my song when the host started playing a smeggin' Tamborine during my performance. At first I glared at her and shook my head and then when she smiled and continued, I turned the mic off and set it on her table, and walked out...
shocking the audience when I did it.
As I said, I don't mind a cd with the instrumentals. But no guitars or other instruments.
I did have a guy that would come in and do harmonica... that I allowed once. But yeah, the comments from the audience were "OH! Can I bring my instrument in?"... and yeah, that's when I said "NO" to instruments from then on!

It's pretty clear to me now from the tone and specific phrases of SW's recent posts on this thread who he REALLY is! While he is not the only poster to ever insist that a Karaoke show is, and must be 100% karaoke, all the time, he has been the most strident and unwavering in regard to this opinion.
Others have already come to their own conclusions about his identity, based upon other rationale, such as his use of emoticons. I'll leave it to others to come to their own conclusions, in their own time. I, personally, will not be drawn into any debates with him!

Learn you business and come back and talk to me. Maybe your karaoke show doesn't have singers night after night, but mine do. I run a karaoke show.
Your statements give away your lack of talent in running a successful karaoke show.
I can read between your lines.
I don't know who everyone keeps referring to or suggesting i am someone you know, but i am me and nobody else. Sorry to disappoint you.
I am a KJ that stumbled on to this site several months ago. Just trying to learn and share info. Like most of you.

You are supposed kj that needs to have things done your way with no other way of success! You have actually provided very little in the way of sharing useful info, just ME ME ME banter.

Discussion forum. Heaven forbid if anyone were to disagree or have a different opinon from the "click." Opposing views are helpful in getting the best answer to problems. I learn things here and i can teach things too. Nobody has a total lock on karaoke knowledge.
Most of these personal attacks on me are coming from "KJs and singers" that can and never do no wrong. Busier than everyone else. More experienced. Better singers. Better KJs. Better high energy. Better web sites. Better equipment. Better jokes and magic tricks. Harder working. Better bar owners. Better town to work in. Better computers. Better swearing crowds. Better water drinkers. Better karaoke competition. Better open stage karaoke nights. Better bumper music. Better opinons. Better condesending remarks. Better insults. Better how can i do this questions. Better bartenders. Better nonsingers. Better light shows. Better war stories. You should listen to yourselves. That's how it sounds to me. STOP.... You're making me :puke:

You have YET to teach, you have in fact put down anyone who had an idea for a show that did not include "pure" karaoke. I personally do not feel you are a kj that has anything to offer, but only to promote crap to anything you do not agree with! You don't like what is being said PLEASE LEAVE!!!! WE encourage it! And just so you will feel right at home here you go.....   :dancin: :hi5: LOL LMAO  :) :asleep: :oh yeah: :drunk:
