I was CARDED when I signed up for rotation.

Now I've been with the same KJ for about 3 years lol and I didn't want to go anywhere else, but my girlfriends told me I HAD to go to this new guy......

I wasn't mad or even burdened by being carded, I was basically confused lol.  Does anyone else do this?  When I asked the KJ about it, he said it was to verify the name I wrote down was indeed mine.

My other KJ just gives us slips with our number and HIS signature so this whole thing just seemed like the HARDEST way possible for him to manage his rotation....?

Thoughts?

Yeah. Maybe he was wanting to know more so he could hit on you. Weird.

Real names are not required or even necessary for the KJ to know. There are a lot of singers who use stage names. Phatboy, Stoney... I have no idea who these guys really are. All that matters is that they come to the stage when I call what they wrote out.

There's one gal who works as an officer at a bank downtown. I do know who she is. But she apparently doesn't want anyone at work to know that she hangs out in bars or something. So she puts "Jersey" - in parenthesis like that with a little wink sometimes - on her slips.

I called her up by her real name one time by mistake. She wasn't happy about it.

Anyway the guy at the door and the bartenders take care of carding the room. That's definitely not my job.

That's just plain weird, and possibly bordering on illegal ... I'd sure have some nice monopoly id next time ... how ridiculous. Can you say Karaoke Nazi????  I agree - he was probably trying to find out who you were. Did he ask others as well?

Does the bar have an age restriction ?   maybe he just wanted to confirm you are over 18.   and then again maybe he WAS hitting on you  LMAO  LMAO

The real question is did he do it to any one else ?

Did he do this to verify you were the one who made the request?   I run into a lot of knuckleheads trying to put in bogus requests for their buddies. It's really annoying.

A kj has no legal right to ask for ID.  This is the bars job.  But like stated, did he ask everyone else or just single you out?

Seriously, here's where my nasty and get-down sense of humor would get the best of me - I'd create a special "KARAOKE ID" card and take it with me to the next show there. Make one for all your friends, make it look very official. Laminate them. Pics and all.

His request is a joke, I'd respond in kind.

I have had people at my shows in the past who will try to sing more then once in a single rotation by putting up tickets under a different name. Maybe he has had trouble in the past with people doing that. It is not my practice to card a singer nor should it be his. It's hard to say why he did it. You didint question him as to why?

Karen, I like the way you think. Perhaps we should make official Karaoke Scene ID's to take with us where ever we sing...LOL

ok, for age verification only, and only when the customer does not look like he is of legal age.

Wrong! In the US, at local venues, any staff member can ask you for ID. The reason for this is to verify that you are of legal age to buy certain products (such as adult videos, cigarettes, alcohol). Also, you don't have to look your age (or underage) to be carded. I'm almost 50, and I've been carded on a few occasions. Even tho I definitely look older than 21, they have said that they have to check everyone (and they do).

As for this KJ carding people, that sounds ridiculous. Like the others said, I think he was just trying to hit on you.

As for people not using their real names at Karaoke, I was at one place where the KJ stated that unless you used your real name, you would not be called up. He did that because there were people using multiple names to get up more than once in a single rotation. I argued with the KJ about that (because everyone there knew me as Cueball). Finally, the compromise that we came up with was, I wrote my real name on the slip in () and he announced me as Cueball.

No one get carded (a word new to me) by any bar staff in Malaysia. I find it strange that this happen in the US. I may be asked for my ID when I checked in a hotel, but never ever in a bar.
We always carry an ID (it has digital info, thump prints and photo) with us and failing to produced one when asked for by a police personal may land you a night in the local police lock up.

Actually here in WA the law states if you do not have valid ID no matter how old you may look, you can not enter the premises.  So they can card anyone at anytime & if you do not have valid ID, you will be asked to leave.

All were women????......I want to karaoke where Mags goes too.... LOL
Seriously......often I have experienced people using bogus names to karaoke more on a crowded night. Some places may have a steady, recognizable base crowd, but with a large part of the crowd changing from night to night. On a very busy night, by the time you catch it, it's too lt's too late, and you really don't want, or have time to make a scene.......jmo
