My son used to pack the house on his Friday night gig here in town.  I went to the show last Friday and only about half the crowd was there that he used to have.  I know the bar was busted a couple of weeks ago because a minor was caught drinking in there.  Their policy was, you could be there if you were over 18, but you couldn't drink.  Now no one under 21 allowed, can't blame them because you can't keep the underaged people from sneaking drinks from the people they are with.   That's one theory of why the crowd is less.  Another is just the fact that Old Man Winter is finally losing his grip on Michigan and people are out doing other things.  I have a theory that maybe it's because he has ran such an unlimited show, with several singers each night singing songs with downright vulgar and disgusting lyrics.  I know I wouldn't go there if it wasn't my son running the show.  Wondering if maybe I'm not the only one that finds it very offensive. Would like to know if you agree with any of these theories, or do you have another one to offer

On the other side of the US we have a similar deal that happens when the days start getting longer. Everybody begins to come out of hibernation (though today we're a toasty 46 degrees)...but there is a transition period when people start staying home longer (maybe having bbq's or something?) and come out to sing a little later. Once the transition happens, things shift back to normal. Our Monday night shows starts at 9:30 so we're not really hit by the lengthening day issue.

We draw a pretty consistent crowd and nobody is ever offended by the nasty songs, though there are very few sung at our show, even with the diaper crowd. Sometimes places go through stages and I think it's important to find out from people, if they're not coming to his show anymore, where they ARE going...and then find out why. I call it "doing my homework."   I will point blank ask people where they've been if they haven't been in for a few weeks.  Flu has laid a lot of people low in the last few mos.  A lot of our people work shifts and especially for Boeing have mandatory OT.

I'd snoop around and find out if they're going somewhere else...and then why.

K

there are many various reasons for a dwindling crowd...change of seasons sure dwindles the crowds temporarily, VULGARITY in excess could drive people elsewhere, ANYTHING IN EXCESS could drive people away, sure the crackdown on minors is a factor..if the people missing are ..underage...and believe it or not Success could cause a crowd to move on to a different show that they can sing MORE songs..crazy but true

My position on X-rated song book content is widely known.   I believe it ultimately hurts your show.    This is a business decision that can make or break you.

Friday was pay day.   My Friday was weird and somewhat less crowded than i thought it would be.   Saturday kicked.    Could be people are going to be more selective in the nights they choose to go out.

It matters when the first of the month comes around as far as people having money.  I can usually tell when it's near the end of the month and everyone ran out of money.

Higher gasoline prices are going to reduce your crowd size.

Having Fun always costs money.

The bust could have kept people away.

We all have off nights. And sometimes there's no explanation. If it's just one or two don't worry. If it's a trend then try to figure out what's happening.

As a host you can tell if songs with expletives are going over or not just by looking over the room. My place accepts those songs... even embraces them sometimes. And we're pretty steadily busy. But our concentration is on recent material (because no one else in this area was doing that basically) and it's not for all rooms. For sure.

If there's a sudden drop-off in business it's usually because of something that just happened. A price hike or new cover are the usual suspects, but I'd put a police raid  in that category. If the anything-goes language had been there all along, that wouldn't be where I'd look first.

As Karen said, communication with your group in all things is a pretty good way to gauge where they are.

Two words Tax Time.

Crowds are cyclic and in the spring things change usually for the better All businesses have their periods of low activity This is normal and also the next peak will be higher than the last. A wheat farmer only hits a bumper crop every 7 years. For 6 years he is shoveling sand against the tide. And singing karaoke down at Shorty's Grill LMAO
