I sometimes wonder if we are on the same planet. Karaoke here is sure a lot different than some impressions in posts here. Here we have evolved karaoke into a more sophisticated format.
Singers here do not have to be drunk to sing. They are not rock stars but sing for the pure pleasure of it. The younger singers grew up with a karaoke machine and are not paranoid about getting bumped in rotation and sometimes even skip one. Singers will request dance songs and if you cut a fill song short when somebody is dancing you hear about it. Singers here know each other and know the best shows in a 2 county area.
Gigs here typically last about 5 years. When a venue is used to high quality karaoke some stranger isnt going to walk in and take over. The crowds here have been going in karaoke bars for years and the average joe (non singer) knows just as much or more than most here about running karaoke. The good KJ"S in this area have a reputation. I have walked into bars and the KJ, singers and owner know I have a system that will blow this one away. Chances are I wouldnt want that gig anyway but everybody including the owner knows (one owner I have known for 50 years) that the reason I'm not there is because they dont pay enough. Currently there isnt anybody that can compete with us in this area.
For years there were only 2 of us that was doing computer karaoke. Now it is prevelant but there has never been a case of somebody with a huge hard drive taking over a show. Bar owners, their customers and the singers would not allow it. When a KJ walks into our show they realize they are a few thousand dollars short and about a year behind us. I continually prune as I get new stuff. My karaoke library runs about 13k. Dj about 10k Both have been structured for about 10 years. We raely get a request that we dont have unless it is new stuff.
I would assume this is similar to most areas or are we unusual because we live in a rural area that is still America.

Small rural town in the heart of the USA.....A part of the country where if you are stopped on an isolated road or highway most stop and ask if you need help. If you moved here we would help you get established and maybe even get you a gig. It then would be up to you to keep it.
One time one of my friends was getting ready to setup and there was an older couple from Chicago with their karaoke system. You wanna do my show? I'd rather just get drunk and have fun tonight. So they done the show and it helped with their vacation costs. Sidenote... They had Cattle Call which I sang with perfect yodeling. THe gal stood on the other side of the dance floor with her mouth open. When I walked by she said I aint never heard that song before in my life. I laughed my ars off..

Singers here do not have to be drunk to sing.
The majority of my singers do feel they do have to drink more than they need to in order to loosen up. But that's why I'm there. It's taken me two years to figure that one out. Don't know about your room.
They are not rock stars but sing for the pure pleasure of it.
True in my room.
The younger singers grew up with a karaoke machine and are not paranoid about getting bumped in rotation and sometimes even skip one.
In my entire karaoke experience I've never had a singer accept someone cutting in unless I gave them a real good reason why I did it. That's why I don't take tips anymore. I don't want to ever look like I'm doing it. If someone asks to get bumped because they have to leave, they must clear it with the singers ahead of them. And skipped? With the usual rotation in this room of 1 to 1 1/2 hours I'd get slaughtered!
Singers will request dance songs and if you cut a fill song short when somebody is dancing you hear about it.
I used to mix dance songs in with karaoke but got so much flak from the singers about it that I discontinued doing it. They're all in there to be up onstage and sing. If you're pulling that one off more power to you.
Singers here know each other and know the best shows in a 2 county area.
That's the cool thing about karaoke. The singers do bond in ways they never would outside the bar. I think that would be true in any karaoke room that caters to locals.
Same planet on some things. Different universe on others.

Oh we dont do it blatantly This one of the few ironclad rules we still adhere to. But if we do screw up nobody is going to have a hissy fit. We typically have a rotation of 10-15 which consists of the best singers in the area including the owner so the wait is not that long. We do not show favor towards anybody they all get treated the same. All of the hard core singers are on the other side of town. I know this is hard to fathom for some but we no longer do a typical karaoke show. I got burned out on it. I look forward to doing this show and the next morning I am still wound up.

It's the great thing about this country, we're all the same but each area has it's own flavor! Here in the North East in NJ , you can find karaoke on any night and in all types of places - Good KJ's , Bad KJ's , KJ's that play DANCE MUSIC and KJ's that don't. I've seen one guy last week advertising over 100,000 songs and some that have 100 cdgs and a ton of nerve LOL . We have nice people and we have a-holes and they come in all ages, colors and creeds. Colorado sounds like a nice place, but if you look hard enough you can find the GOOD no matter where you call home.

--I knew a KJ that had about that many disks. She expanded her show to maybe 200 disks ultimately, and she had the job for a couple years. After having sung at places that had huge selections, I was pretty surprised to see this skeletal song book, but it worked for her.
