The thread that BlueRose started about "older karaoke music" got me thinking.  For one, I had to consider whether the music during the time period Blue wondered about is really "older karaoke" music.  I can only wonder, "older than what"?  Many of the responders to her question spoke of the music from an even older period of time - that of my parent's generation!

Then I began to wonder whatever happened, generally speaking, to the main stream music of the 50's that existed before rock and roll took over. The music of:

 There were many great songs in that group (Rags To Riches, Oh My Papa, Three Coins In The Fountain)  And while one of their songs may be heard on occasion (I've done Oh My Papa ) they are rarely done at karaoke.  I'll have to look to see what is actually available for karaoke?

I know Sweet Georgia Brown is constantly dissed here, but they actually have a significant offering in this area. Look at the SGB37, SGB01, SG02, SGB03. (More if you count their two Sinatra disks.)

Legends has some decent singer disks for Bennett, Shore, Doris Day, Marilyn Monroe, etc. I have a lot of this stuff because I do a party for my 70+ parents and bought quite a bit of that stuff for that reason.

DK3100 is good, along with some tracks on the other DK disks (which are a steal when you get them for $5.00 and less at  karaoke.com like I did).

Supercore has a decent selection of the most popular tracks on SPC31 and SPC30. You should own SuperCore unless you have a really extensive SoundChoice or Chartbuster collection.

If you get the Mitch Miller Chartbuster, the disks I mention you will have a very respectable collection. For less than $100 plus whatever Legends singer disks you get....

Make sure you check out Barnes & Noble - thanks Ollie! - they have CBs for a pretty good price, and you can probably pick up individual artist ones (6+6) for a very decent price. They also have the decade collections of 50 songs for less than $30 if I am recalling that correctly.

SGB, Legends, Pocket Songs, and Priddis all cover many of the older songs--check out the Sinatra thread too.  Some of the songs on the first couple SGB disks are have really nice jazz renditions, for example, Body and Soul and Satin Doll.  Some of these renditions have long instrumental parts where you don't get to sing, so be forwarned!  Anyone ever try singing Scotch and Soda (hint, you have enough time to go to the bar and order a scotch and soda during the instrumental part).

I've sung a couple Nat King Cole songs--Route 66 and L-O-V-E.

Johnny, stop showing off your youth.  If you don't know those artists, ask your parents (or grandparents if you're around twenty, or so).

DK Millenium set.

Music Maestro Doo Wop set.

Pioneer set if you can find them.

  1)  Even better:  Original DK 1-99 discs.  Millenium is still pretty easy to find

Millenium is a remake of the originals with the songs grouped together differently with a few new ones added.

Nobody has better sounding songs than Pioneer.

baloney, sw. (and shame on you Morgan! there's some fantastic songs on DK!) I'm a huge proponent for Pioneer, but they had some pretty weak versions (sound levels, bass, tinny music on many of their earlier ones) of some songs that even Music Maestro did a better job of.

I have to agree totally with you on this Khightshow. When I first started Pioneer still were available. I bought two disks that had songs I wanted and was disapointed in the versions as well as the half volume of the tracks. I subsequently replaced them with DK or Sound Choice. DK rocks!

I have almost the entire set of Pioneer on CDG because there are 'old' karaoke singers who want ONLY the pioneer version of things. It is annoying, however, that their recording levels were so LOW...

And then of course there is the inevitible after effect of Pioneer....

Cranking it WAY up for the Pioneer, and forgetting to lower it for the next song like a SGB, and blowing everyone  :O away until you can grab the volume knob/slider...

Not that  :shock: that has ever  happenned to me of course...

heheheh... that's what I like about the auto fade features of the clubdjpro software!

Some of the DK renditions are great, for example This Guy's In Love.  Others, like Brazil I like less.  Has anyone tried to sing SGB's The Way You Look Tonight?  It's way too fast.  A slow romantic ballad karaokied at break-neck speed?  What the hey?  The Legends Rod Stewart version is much better.

I'm only half-deaf or think i am, but wHY do i remember the pioneer laserdiscs sounding better than the pioneer cdgs music?

IT has to be the same tracks right, because that wouldn't make sense to re-record the same tracks unless they got better musicians. I love pioneer but never bought the lasers. They were too expensive and cdgs had already entered the market when i got into karaoke on a more serious basis. It's sooooo true the levels are way too low on the songs, but i prefer them anyways to most manufacturers. Anybody wanna sell me theirs? I don't have 'em all!

Perhaps the HOT WOMEN on the videos (boots are made for walkin') made me concentrate more on the sound and visuals!

Much of the music on the Pioneer series is the same on the laser as the cdg.  There were some cases that they redid songs because of too short of intros - like Unchained Melody & You've Lost That Loving Feeling come to mind right of hand, however these remakes didn't sound anywhere as good as the versions they replaced.  Also alot of the songs were re-recorded in the laser series as well before they started over to cdg.  They completely redid their line to be multiplexed - which those that have been in the biz long enough know the true original series - up until around #43 I think, wasn't multiplexed, but music only.  So when they made THAT switch, alot of their songs needed to be redone to add the vocal tracks - and figured they would redo several that they had had complaints on throughout the years.
