Here's last night.

it must have been the full moon. A good half the singers were over-the-top drunk, a couple was busted for having sex in a stall in the woman's rest room, and towards the end of the night someone ran his car off the parking lot and into the bushes. The cops were sorting that one out as I was packing up.

SRO from about 11 to 1:00, and still busy right up until 2:30. For this room that's typical. But the room only seats about 80 so not a big deal.

It's a fair size room though. But half of it is a gaming area with video poker, slots, pool and foosball tables.

I'm just going to type these titles as they are and let the cuss filter do it's thing this time. You guys know what these songs are.

maroon 5  - makes me wonder (sung by me to soundcheck and start. got one in)
carrie underwood - all american girl
house of the rising sun
no doubt - dont speak
mary j blige - family affair
taylor swift - our song
bonnie raitt - something to talk about
natalie imbruglia - torn (same singer as sat)
puddle of mudd - she hates me (same singer as sat)
t-pain - im in luv wit a stripper
9 to 5
evanescence - call me when youre sober
love shack
tenacious d - (@$%&#!) her gently
cherry poppin daddies - zoot  suit riot
tracy chapman - give me one good reason
jimmy buffett - cheeseburger in paradise
big & rich - save a horse
pink - u & ur hand
white rabbit
afroman - because i get high (same singer as sat)
elton john - dont let the sun
doors - people are strange
korn - get the life
christina aguilera - what a girl wants
backstreet boys - i want it  that way
shania twain - honey im home
toby keith - whiskey girl
killers - mr brightside
korn - adidas (different korn singer-new CD getting a run through)
terri clark - emotional girl
foreigner - i want to know what love is
bohemian rhapsody
maroon 5 - harder to breathe
drowning pool - bodies
sublime - santeria
meatloaf - id do anything for love
poison - something to believe in
salt n pepa - push it
beatles - back in ussr (first beatles song in awhile!)
2 live crew - we want some (@$%&#!) (different singer than sat. - popular song- message)
toby keith - im just talkin about tonight
eminem - just lose it
strawberry wine
timbaland - apologize
journey - lights
sinatra - NY NY (sung well by a guy in his mid 20s)
dr dre snoop dogg - nothin but a g thang
NIN - closer
meridith brooks - (@$%&#!)
limp bizkit - boiler
golden earring - twilight zone
godsmack - voodoo
avril lavigne - girlfriend
chuck berry - my ding a ling (sung by an older guy at the bar trying to fit in)
billy idol - white wedding
youve lost that lovin feeling
lee ann womak - i may hate myself in the morning
squirrel nut zippers - hell
bloodhound gang - bad touch
eddy grant - electric avenue
scoripions - winds of change (same singer as sat)
papa roach - last resort
adam sandler - piece of (@$%&#!) car
my girl
shania - whose boots
marcy playground - sex and candy
blondie - heart of glass
edwin mccain - i'll be (special order for the singer. never heard it before. nice song.)
dusty springfield - son of a preacher man
simple plan - welcome to my life
rodney atkins - cleaning this gun
sean kingston - beautiful girls (done as the closer at request of singer who was trying it out)

72 from shortly after 9 to 2:30. Styles sometimes get bunched together because tables of like minds tend to bring slips up as a group. if I'm not slammed I'll sometimes break them up just a bit at the start for the sake of room variety. But I didn't last night. Just took 'em as they came in.

Sat night. Much calmer than Thurs with all singers pretty much singing up to their individual abilities unencumbered by too much alcohol. Rotation was a very manageable 12-15 most of the night, dipping to eight the last two rounds. 9:30-2:30. A lot of different styles on Sat but the singers all get along and it does make for an interesting night.

amie - pure prairie league (an unusual start for this room, but there it was)
garth brooks - two of a kind
desperado
rhcp - otherside
no doubt - dont speak
tenacious d - (@$%&#!) her gently
twisted sister - we're not going to take it
metallica - enter sandman
picture
meredith brooks - (@$%&#!)
wynonna - no one else on earth
sublime - santeria
eagles - seven bridges road
divinyls - i touch myeslf (still haven't picked up the DK version yet and I need to)
neon moon
looking glass - brandy
timbaland - apologize
marcy playground - sex and candy
danzig - mother (sung a lot right now because I just got it)
puddle of mudd  - she hates me (commonly sung by the entire room)
korn - falling away from me
total eclipse of the heart
johnny cash - hurt
i love this bar
barry manilow - copacabana (sung for unknown reasons  by a woman in her early 20s. The only song she sang.)
lynyrd skynyrd - simple man
brooks and dunn - that's what she gets for loving me
alannah myles - black velvet
alicia keys - no one (my BH version is very faithful to the original with a heavy kick. I need to back the 60hz band way back on the top graphic or else risk damaging my subs. Just a warning if you ever get this thing)

what a wonderful world
bohemian rhapsody
stp - plush
highway to hell
pink - dont let me get me
disturbed - down with the sickness (commonly sung by most of the guys)
smile empty soul - silhouettes
fiona apple - criminal
alanis morissette - hand in my pocket
shania twain - party for two
madonna - like a prayer
j geils - centerfold
guns n roses - sweet child of mine
before he cheats
pearl jam - jeremy
vanliia ice - ice ice baby
avril lavigne - girlfriend (different singer this time)
hotel california
fuel - hemorrhage in my hands
staind - its been awhile
man of constant sorrow
tina turner - you'd better be good to me
toni braxton - youre making me high
adam sandler - piece of (@$%&#!) car (this singer did it Thurs to a huge reaction so he repeated it last night)
golden earring - twilight zone (new purchase getting a lot of use)
blind melon - no rain
green day - boulevard of broken dreams
rodney carrington - letter to my (@$%&#!) (done to good response by one of the country singers)
save a horse ride a cowboy
a-ha - take on me
flo rida - low
toadies - possum kingdom (new purchase again)
drowning pool - bodies (common song to the room)
planet earth - bartender
tool - aenima
sara evans - suds in the bucket
white zombie - thunder kiss 65
godsmack - voodoo (common to the room)
metallica - fade to black
black sabbath - war pigs

I must not be living right. Like last Saturday, not only did Before he Cheats and Picture come up again (different singers though), the were joined by...  Hotel California.

These are sung by drop-ins. The regulars know better because singing a song like this is basically the same as losing a turn. The room takes the song off as soon as they hear the opening chords and heads to the rest rooms, bar, or outside. Or just ignores them.

Looks like 71 if I counted right. I didn't sing any. Had a pretty full rotation right off the bat.

Bill, what do the baritones do in some of these mostly-rock sets? Just about every song I see is for a tenor....

"Possum Kingdom" was a special order. I'll confess - I never heard of it before. But the room knows it, and that's why this singer usually puts it up when there. It's new and probably won't get sung all the time in a few more weeks. But who knows... if the room keeps yelling their approval when the opening chords hit, it will stay.

The room developed it's attitude when I found a group that felt they couldn't sing what they wanted to in the existing rooms in the area. The full PA is obviously a huge draw. All styles and singers are welcome though. The more experienced singers that stick around get a kick of watching the younger group do their thing. The ones that find it uncomfortable move on, which is extremely easy to do. The place is surrounded with karaoke rooms.

On a night like last Saturday it's actually a break not to have everything pounding away full-blast.

My book was put together largely by requests from this specific room because I've never done karaoke seriously anywhere else. But I do have the basics covered in all styles.

What the room responds to in traditional songs can be trial and error. There's a guy (a terrific baritone) who after trying his repertoire out landed a "hit" with "Georgia On My Mind". I have no idea why the place likes that song over his other ones, but they do, and that's what he always sings when he comes in.

Another baritone sings a lot of Moody Blues. All down two. I bought a SC Moody Blues disc just for him - he's so good at this stuff. No one else will ever sing anything off this disc in this room, but I bought it because he's got a great voice and the room appreciates that.

This same guy will sing "Tush"... down 5! A full half octave! I didn't even know you could transpose down that far on a karaoke cut. But my CB version can handle it without getting too wierd. It does give it a bit of a death metal edge.

Because it's a baritone song sung by a baritone, maybe? 8-)

I can hit many tenor notes, but that isn't my range.

All this is exactly why I went to country for songs to sing. Before I started singing 3 years ago I hardly knew who George Strait was. Now I sing mostly country because there are few rock songs I can do in my range.

About the only ones I have are Cherry Bomb (down 2), Heard It In A Love Song, Ramblin' Man -2, Excitable Boy -1, Strange Condition -1, Don't You Care -1, Lookin' Out My Back Door -3, and a few others. I can sing all those at 0 but that is not where my voice belongs.

As time has gone on, I find myself recoiling at the self-absorbed, immature, and pretentious lyrics of many rock songs. I just feel more comfortable singing country.

Exactly. In karaoke, as in life, sometimes it's best not to try being something you aren't  and just be who you are.

........and look out I'm getting too philosophical here..............

Right, because we all know country music doesn't have any songs like that. Gimme a break, I could list a dozen reasons why I don't like much country music and most of them would have to do with lyrical content. If you can't sing it or prefer not to, just leave it at that, no need to be insulting. Rudy.

I'm going to bump this thread back to page one with another night. I don't want you guys thinking that I'm showing off or anything. I just think it's a good idea and I don't want it to fade away. I only do one room primarily and I've learned some things from the diversity of the other KJs who've contributed. If no one else follows this is it.

The usual Thursday. Started a little past 9 and went to 2:30. I didn't sing at all. Rotation started with about a dozen and swelled to over 20 quickly.

toni braxton - you're making me high
puddle of mudd - she hates me (a song sung by just about everyone in the room)
tracy chapman - give me one good reason
bjork - violently happy
reba mcentire - why haven't i heard from you
counting crows - mr jones
michelle branch - are you happy now
sara evans - suds in the bucket
disturbed - the game
alicia keys - a woman's worth
lady antebelllum - love don't live here
timbaland - apologize
a perfect circle - pet
gretchen wilson - redneck woman
melissa etheridge - come to my window
puddle of mudd - she hates me (sung by a woman this time!)
avril lavigne - girlfriend
sugarland - just might make me believe
eminem/nate dogg - shake that
sir mix a lot - baby got back (I should have spread these great dance songs out)
NIN - only
wilson pickett - mustang sally
bryan adams - please forgive me

dynamite hack - boys in the hood

you've lost that loving feeling - that "Georgia On My Mind" guy
guns n roses - welcome to the jungle
sublime - badfish
picture - yeah....again...
AFI - leaving song

I've found a faster way of getting songs up than continuous on my player. When it's like this I use the "next" hot key and can eliminate an extra 5 seconds or so. I call the next singer up as soon as the last word is sung over the outro and they've all been jumping up onstage fast for me. It's been real cool. I must have got 75 through last night.

Thanks Lonnie. You could never put up too many nights.

From your other sets I've picked up a few obvious things that I was missing. Sister Christian... there's one that conceivably could get sung in my room that I didn't have. Yellow Ledbetter... now I've just got to convince that guy whose only song is Jeremy to give it a shot. ;) Or someone. It'll get sung...

Looking over your list from last Friday reminds me that I need to get some more Seether...

KJs don't be shy! It's fun to see what you're doing. There is a lot of diversity among us, obviously from the talk that gets thrown around here. So put 'em up!

Yeah if you can get the Radio Starz Pearl Jam disc it will be a good buy.  There are several songs on it that will most likely get done.  Evenflow, Alive, Elderly Woman Behind A Counter In A Small Town, Hunger Strike (Temple Of The Dog) - these are the main ones, but then I have alot of Pearl Jam on the older Sound Choice discs as well that get done often that are on this disc as well.

Thanks. I may pick that disc up in the future then.

I've had a few Pearl Jam tracks all along and just downloaded Yellow Ledbetter and Alive last week. I'd like to get some of the guys away from Jeremy which is oversung.

One of the advantages to having a room full of relative newcomers is that I can suggest things to them without them taking offense so we'll see.

The most relentless Jeremy singer is a semi-regular on Saturday nights. I'm going to give it a shot.
