(Offshoot of the PBTDBL thread)

I know I know... take the good with the bad. There's a line between tolerating a song just because it's sung too often vs. ones that are truly room killers.

(I'm putting together my song list these days. Better to nix them in the first place.) Any advice greatly appreciated!!

I'll kick off the list with the obvious.

Paradise by the Dashboard Light
American Pie
Before He Cheats
Friends in Low Places (long version)

I'm not sick of Before He Cheats yet, the others I've heard enough for a lifetime.

In addition to your list, now I can't stand:

Chatahoochie
Achy Breaky
Desperado
New York New York(unless sung well)
My Way(unless sung well)

There's a bunch more I can't think of right now.
Unfortunately Karaoke can spoil some songs for you.

Add these:

Baby Got Back
Picture (aaaheeuuuuuwwwwccchhh)
(I'm afraid you'll have to actually HAVE Picture, though...sorry to say)

First two I thought of but I'm sure I'll add more...

I'm sick of as many of them as you are, but most of them are still real crowd pleasers.     The crowd usually reacts pretty strongly to them in a positive way.

Oh come on, I cant believe no one has added LOVE SHACK yet... I think it is played at EVERY venue we have, and I catch myself singing along now and the dreaded tin roof gets stuck in my head no matter what.

I really use to like the song.

And the obvious Summer Nights sang every week...

But like SW says they are crowd pleasers, and no matter what I can cringe at the thought of hitting play, but the singers have such a great time singing them and it is only really me that is tired of hearing them.

Its all part of the business, and I will admit, it would be okay if those became un-popular, but I dont think that will ever happen. Maybe if I just buy some props or something it will change it up! On a possitive note. lol

I still appreciate the singers for the audiance participation songs!

-- War Pigs, Ozzy Osbourne. 7 minutes of pure hell.
-- Scenes from an Italian Restaurant, Billy Joel, 7:24. If someone would do it well, that is one thing. But I have heard it murdered twice and it was excruciating.
-- Total Eclipse of the Heart, Bonnie Tyler. I have to sit through 6:35 of this every week. I think I need to find a shorter version.

[font=verdana]Before He Cheats is sang in every one of my son’s Friday night shows, by my daughter in law and her friends. That and Hollaback Girl. They get a very positive response from the crowd, especially with the latter.  I say it doesn’t matter if the host is sick and tired of hearing the song, if it’s a crowd pleaser, well that’s who you do this for……right

Q:  What is a 'Hollaback Girl' anyway.  LOL

Hey you know this thread is a good idea because I'm checking the lengths of these 'issue' songs...

I have to have "War Pigs" because of the nature of my room. The Legends version I'm using (which in this case sounds pretty good) is 4:43. It's not done all that much, but there's this one really husky voiced female singer that fronts an alt metal band who always does it when she comes in. To good crowd response.

I'm still using SGB for "Total Eclipse...". 5:45. A little shorter than yours mckyj57. It's not done all that much, and when it is the words usually get "messed" with by my crew of mostly under 30 singers.... ;) Wouldn't mind a shorter version (and better sounding) myself if anyone has ideas.

For both "Summer Nights" and "Love Shack" I'm still using the tracks from my Supercore starter set which everyone's used to, and once again they sound good enough.... for these. ;) The only other versions I have is Legends. But check out these times:

Summer Nights:
SPC: 3:40
LEG: 4:13

Love Shack:
SPC: 4:18
LEG: 5:52!

I've never used the Legends versions so I don't know why they're longer. And I'm not submitting myself to the torture of listening to them right now to find out. My curiosity is not that strong.

Ok, I've spent time speculating on this before and rather than continue to guess about it here is an article about the subject in question.

"Because Stefani never disclosed the song title's meaning, reviewers came up with various interpretations. In a satirical, line-by-line analysis of the song's lyrics, OC Weekly critic Greg Stacy humorously speculated that "Gwen is apparently the captain of the cheerleader squad; she is the girl who 'hollas' the chants, not one of the girls who simply 'hollas' them back".

The most commonly accepted meaning is that a hollaback girl responds to a confrontation with words but that Stefani would rather take initiative and "step it up".(cut from Wikipedia article on "Hollaback Girl")

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollaback_girl

I don't know if that's a definitive answer since Stefani hasn't addressed it, but there ya go!

My daughter just came into the computer room. She explained that another female is talking trash and Gwen is sayin' "I'm not gonna talk sh#t back (hollaback) I'm gonna kick your a##!"

It was done a lot by the ladies when it was out but hasn't been done in my room yet this year I don't think.

edit: Pretty much the same thing Tad said but he beat me to the post.

I'm glad to see some comparisons on the times of songs from various manufacturers. It appears that length (of songs) matters

Whole Lotta Love - Led Zeppelin is pretty bad when you can't get someone that sings it well - plus the fact that most hosts don't know how the effects are supposed to go so they either leave it a real basic reverb or put too much effect in it.

Yeah, but Crazy at least is over quickly.

Next month I am starting up a regular once-a-month Tuesday show, and if you can come up with two songs that are less than 6 minutes combined you will get to sing twice...we will see if that does anything toward getting people to pick shorter songs.

I am going to try and figure out the time of every song in my library and have a lookup for that.

This is very true, it just goes into the 'overdone' book for me!

Of all the songs listed, not one has any offensive language or topics.  And these you want to ban forvever from your books and songs that truly insult or disrespect the audience you don't find them a problem.   Very curious.

Seems to be backward logic.   Totally illogical...

Live long and prosper...

Okay so one song for sure I dont ever care to hear again thank you SW for bringing this up, is Bloodhound Gang - Ballad of Chasey Lane.
Some of the words to it are,
Dear Chasey Lain
I wrote to explain
I'm your biggest fan
I just wanted to ask
Could I eat your a**?
Write back as soon as you can

You've had a lotta d***
Had a lotta d***
I've had a lotta time
Had a lotta time
You've had a lotta d*** Chasey
But you ain't had mine

This song is completely raunchy, disgusting and offensive. And I had no idea what it was until someone actually sang it.  :O  Now that one is getting pulled with many others for the time being we just blacked out the song from the pages so no one can choose it.

All I can say is NO WAY. It should be completely censored.

But there are other songs that I dont find to be so crude, like the Buckcherry - Crazy B*tch well it may be a little out there but the girls actually really love that one so I have left it alone.

We have a going list of offensive materials that we wont play at all, just for that reason.

This is interesting.  Buckcherry - Crazy Bytch is my most requested song (DJ), I don't have it karaoke.  Now...it has by any standards, got a more rude and crude subject matter than just about any other song out there.  The difference is, it has been socially accepted.  The song by BHG, isn't no where near as bad, but it looked at in a totally different light.  These type of songs, have limited places, times when they should be allowed to be played.  That is part your job as a DJ/KJ to know the material you are playing and when it's appropriate or not....MrD
