After your first song to "test" the equipment, then what if nobody else is ready to sing.  Just sit there?  Or go begging?

This isn't an every night occurance but it does happen.

I never said that the crowd killers didn't get applause.   Not everyone is clapping.   Those are the ones that are debating about leaving or not.   But if they are the only other singers (beside me) for any length of time the crowd is going to be leaving shortly.

What's your cure for a long string of slow or boring songs?

I'm thinking about leaving (this thread) now. YOU (SW) are the "Crowd Killer" here... you and your "One Song Glory."  Try singing a diiferent tune. It's gotten old already. This topic thread isn't about how YOU run YOUR show SW. If you want to talk about that, why don't you just open up a new Topic Thread entitled "How to do it RIGHT (or MY WAY)."?  

Now... how about we all get back to the original topic.... After 1 week in this topic, I'd like to hear more about the guy this thread was opened up about. Has there been any new developements? Has he come back to your (KaraokeBradSC) show? Have you talked him into singing again?

SW - No reason to answer your first question, it's already been answered several times above, if you aren't able to comprehend, then well  :roll:
As to your last question, doesn't really matter what I say I do now does it, you would just attack it too!  VERY TIRESOME!

To add to this...I never 'start' the show with a karaoke song.  Generally, I'm up and playing 'omg' filler music for a good 1/2hr, if not 1hr..before karaoke is even supposed to start.  During this time, I'll test both of the mics quick, talk to guests, take requests, karaoke slips, have a couple of cocktails, finish the set up & just plain mingle....
Also, where I differ...I am 100% mobile, every week..every night.  I have "zero" set up when I walk in the door, so that does account for some of my reasoning on things.  I am still trying to figure out just how to get the auidence to quit giving the cold shoulder, when you have tried everything you can think of.  Doesn't happen often, but new or unknown singers happens the most.  No matter how good or bad..the may get the cricket treatment!  MrD

One great big no no... Dont break out in an auctioneers chant during mic check and start selling a pool table... A stranger gets pissed when he finds out you are just horsin' around..

I constantly am amazed at how well I am received at clubs where most everyone is 25 years younger than I am. I was at a college bar in Asheville, NC just last week. Average age had to be 22 or so, and they went wild when I did 'Too Gone Too Long".

I was at Singers in Syracuse, a 7-day-a-week 8-hours-a-day karaoke club, and the people were very nice to me even though I sang old stuff and country because their *#W!!FK@#!! Winamp key-changer wasn't working (until I fixed it the second day).

Hey mckyj57, Too Gone Too Long is a great song!  I love that classic country music!

I have told this here before.  We happened into a college bar (packed) and I finally got called up.I sang Half as Much by Hank.  On my way back a cute lil thing dashed up and threw her arms around me and in a sweet southern drawl " That was my grandpas favorite song!! You remind me of him so much"  This has happened 3 times and you realize you are a memory or a link for a college kid a long way from home. I had a young college guy singing Makin' Believe in a deep voice and he didnt even realize that it was more of a female song. They love it!!!

Music does not recognize age and anybody that appreciates music sings it all/

I couldn't agree with you more, Lon.  I consider all of my regulars to be friends.  Most of them, I only know because of karaoke.  If you'd leave your family out, would you leave out your friends, too?  If they are buying drinks, food, they deserve the same amount of space in the rotation as any other paying customer.  No matter who's family they were born into.

I don't leave anyone out unless they turn in a song at midnight. (12:30 is break-down time.)  Hell, I guess I cater to those that come early.  They spend more money in the bar.

Ill open it up by singing something upbeat and uptempo to put the place in a party mood----usually start with "Celebration". ---that gets the message across---if the people are not ready to sing yet then I play filler songs---usually Earth Wind and Fire---cant go wrong with that!! Upbeat, uptempo, and hi-energy and EVERYONE likes it. Then a bit later Ill sing another and then they are usualy readr to join in. Then do a big intro for the the first person of the evening and gived them a big hand when they are done. And so it goes.I DONT ALLOW the cold shoulder at my shows. It may be LESS loud applaued--but NO ONE gets the silent treatment--I MAKE SURE OF THAT!!

Ironically, the seven-day a week karaoke (membership club) here in Pompano FL is also named "Singers"

I open the show with 2 songs- one fast and one slow. I try to also make it one I do well and one I do OK, so people don't get intimidated. I run a 2song at a time rotation, and if I have 5-10 singers, and then myself doing 1-2 at the top of the rotation, no one seems to mind.

I will admit- I got into this business as a singer first. I enjoy singing. I get to sing more than anyone in a night because many people request background help in addition to my own rounds.

Also, I run a very unusual rotation. Until I get 8-10 singers, I will keep adding new singers to the list before flipping to the start again. When people see me sing, it is the signal that we are back at the top.

I know what you mean--people can get cliquey sometimes and only support the people they know.  I'm not a kj, but as an audience member, I try to support everyone.  I'd say more, but I gotta go back to work right now.

I will sing in rotation until I get a few singers up, then back myself out... or back one out, whichever comes first! ! I'm too busy making certain the show is ran right rather than pay attention to my own ego!

The ego I WANT to stroke is my continued GIG success, and that means when the singers see there's a longer rotation, I'm doing my darnedest to get them up as soon as I can.

And yes, that does mean I'm walking the floor, talking to those that are waiting, asurring them of when they are coming up, etc...

Do you have a kj'ing gig now, Matt?  If so, where and when, in case I am in the area?  I will be going to KC Sun. night & part of Mon. this weekend, btw.

That's good that you let people know when they are coming up.  It helps to know, "So-and-so, you're next," so you can prepare yourself.

I think somewhere there was a topic about getting cold shoulder to a good singer.

I'm usually the swing and a miss singer.  I'm with some new tracks to try out, and expecting the pity applause or the pity pander from the KJ "Let's give a big hand for him folks" that is said every other singer.   That is more humiliating than receiving crickets.   Please KJ youre just embarassing the both of us.

And whoever sings good or bad I'm just giving the wtg hand clap.

I agree with the begging the crowd to clap thing.  It is kinda embarrassing.

I sang a few songs tonight and the crowd was going crazy, clapping and yelling and whistling.    I was kinda embarrassed by it.    Most of the night all the singers were treated very well.    20 singers.      Some nights you get crowds that really are appreciative and others they could care less.
