If your venue is licensed for karaoke through ASCAP, BMI, etc..., anything you play is fine for fill. Karaoke is an add on charge to the regular music playback & DJ.

it's the bar's responsibility if they have a jukebox... or tape deck, they're already breaking the law if they're not paying the ascap bmi stuff.
also, there's a little button called caps lock. Please avail yourself of how to use it.

Just out of curiosity, do many KJs play fill music between singers? I remember one who did it consistently (usually something with a good beat and no vocals). I liked it, but it seems that many KJs in this area avoid this practice. My take is that it keeps the place hopping. However, I can see the point of view that it may detract from the performance and/or song selections of the singers.
I was just wondering.

Mustang, Since its the bars responsibility to pay the Asscap BMI fees, Whatever you play is cool!!
I love the seamless type cd compilations bought at Tower Etc.

I've been using fill music in between singers (JUST enough until the next singer is cued & ready) for 10 years. Works great.

I just started using fill music, and so far people have really liked it. I keep a 50's/60's type dance CD on random play with a portable cd player hooked into my mixer, and it sounds great. I know eventually I will have to get a real CD player, but till then it's a cheap fix!
Long live Jury riggin'!

I'm not familiar with "Tower Etc." What kind of music is it and where might I find it?

Mustang:
Don't take it too personally. However, typing in all caps is construed as shouting in on-line forums and chat rooms. Many people take offense to it. He was just apprising you of it with a little humor (or should I say sarcasm)
Cheers

Promoonly.com has several subscription options, as does ergmusic.com Personally, I like the "Nu Music Traxx" line from ERG - comes out twice a month and contains a mixture of the latest pop, rock, urban, dance and country titles, as opposed to having separate subscriptions per genre. If you DJ, these pay for themselves.
If you're looking to build up a base of music, such as latin, standards, disco, classic rock, oldies, etc. - the stuff you need for mobile work, Best Buy/Circuit Citys have excellent compilations at reasonable prices. You may also do well and save a few more bucks at a used CD shop. For specialty and hard-to-find music, Tower often comes through. Online, I generally go to cduniverse.com or cdnow.com (now part of amazon.com), and sometimes ebay.

Hey Cathy gal!! How are ya?
And mustang, you'll know when I'm really tellin ya how to do something. It was a suggestion. If you don't want to do that and do things the way you want to do, fine.
However, since many of us DO find it distasteful for BBoard behavior, don't be surprised too much when some of us don't respond.
I gave you an answer on top of the sarcasm. I didn't bite your head off, please don't bite mine off!
Thx
Matt

Once again this talented group has offered some great suggestions!!!
I really love this site!!!
Most places carry a licence from one of the Performing Rights organizations but if you trully are concerned for the Writers, buy the mechanical liocences for all your stuff and that includes and discs that you burn.
Not only am I a voting member of SOCAN, but I am a publisher too, and I am well versed in the Copyright acts of both Your country and Canada.
For you fellow Canadians contact the CMMRA it costs less than you think and will give you the permission you need to record, perform or play any song.In the US contact the Harry Hays Organization.
Cheers Rick E

Tell us more about this orginization and just how to get in touch with them. I have had both BMI and ASCAP come into our shows and would like to get rid of them once and for all. My venues cover about a 60 mile radius and cannot garuntee they all are licensed.
