Kelley, if Bobbie Gentry's original version of "Fancy" ever comes out on karaoke, I might try singing that. It would be easier for me to sing than Reba's (which I haven't done yet).
Eric (and everyone), last night I tried singing "Town Without Pity" again and I nailed it!!!!! Yeah!!!!!!!!
There weren't a whole lot of people there, as it was early in the evening, but they seemed to like it. I had them lower the key by 4 half-steps (I had been singing it at -3, but I tried -4 this time), and that worked out great--it didn't sound like the track was slowed down or anything like that. (BTW, when I say I had them LOWER the key, I don't mean that I _sing_ it lower--I sing it _higher_. But I'm afraid that if they raise the key, the background vocals on the track would just sound ridiculous, 'cause they're so high already, know what I mean?)
I asked one of the kj's beforehand if they'd ever had anyone sing it, and he said, "I've sung it." I said, "Well, shoot, I oughta just let _you_ sing it." He replied that his range wasn't what it used to be. I asked him after I was done singing it, "How did I do?" and he said I did fine. Of course, maybe he says that to everyone, I dunno... LOL
I sang it in the car on the way there (just to practice in case I decided to sing it that night). That seemed to help a lot. Of course, I don't usually know ahead of time what I'm gonna sing, so I can't practice EVERY song in the car, but I guess if you find a really difficult song like that and you want to get it right, that's a good idea.
