BlueRose, I know what you mean about practicing hard on a song and having someone beat you to it--and it doesn't just happen at karaoke.  When I took singing lessons, I would sing in church sometimes (not my current church, but one I went to before that), and I was working VERY hard on the song "Not Too Far from Here".  Then when I'm all ready to sing it in church, I find out someone had just sung it at a Sun. night service there!  That wasn't so bad, but then--I don't know, maybe about a month later, I'm preparing to sing "Via Dolorosa", and the same girl (one of the music director's pets--although I'll admit she had a good voice) sang that before I did!  And this was not long after she had already sung the other song!  I eventually got to do both songs, but that was quite frustrating and I felt  discouraged for a while.  There were a lot of people at that church who could sing really well (I'm not including myself in this, as I was just a beginner at the time), but about 4 people got most of the solos--they were good, but there were a LOT of good voices at that church.  I'm not just being a diva either--I noticed this even BEFORE I had any interest in singing solos!  (I hadn't started doing karaoke at the time, but I probably should have.  I needed to get my singing groove on!)

The funny thing was, after my son was born and I sang to him all the time, I loved singing to him soooooooo much (and singing WITH him, when he got old enough)  that it didn't matter to me whether I sang in public again or not.  Singing to li'l kiddo was definitely worthwhile.  Eventually, I did sing in public again--quite a bit!
