Well, this is strange. I've just added White Wedding and Rebel Yell to my repertoire.

When I first started singing Karaoke everything that I sang was smooth and mellow, mostly classics like Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, lots of oldies. People called me unflatteringly a lounge singer because I had a smooth, soft mellow singing style. It was because I was timid and lacked confidence. It was also the kind of music I knew, what I grew up on.

My singing training was in middle school and high school choir and madrigals. Blending in with the other singers was stressed over and over. I didn't know any other way to sing. I never sang alone, didn't know I could and didn't think that I could.

Since I bought a bunch of Karaoke discs I have been going through them searching for songs that I can sing and that I like. I'm not sure how I decided to try White Wedding or Rebel Yell other than that I like them. I never dreamed I could sing songs like that. After I practiced them and loosened up, I do a very decent job of them if I may so.

Of course not everyone likes that kind of music. It's loud and hard pounding. Some people probably consider it yelling. I like it. It's fun and exciting.

 " Eyes Without A Face" is one of my favorite Billy Idol tunes and the Sound Choice version is absolutely perfect wiyh the childrens choir singing in the background

Good for you. It's always a plus to expand your repertoire, and the songs you are working with appeal to a pretty large cross-section of people. It is not necessarily easy to sing those songs, either... gotta have that trademark Idol snarl. *grin*

I was also classically trained, but now my repertoire is centered around acts like Disturbed, Breaking Benjamin, Alice in Chains, Finger Eleven, and the Foo Fighters.

Go figure.

I've gone through quite a metamorphosis since I started singing Karaoke. I have a feeling it will just continue changing and never stop as far as what sons I sing and what kinds of music I'm interested in.

My range has gone up a bit too. I wish it would go up even more so I wouldn't have to lower the key so much.

I heard a couple of songs last night that I want to try out, Lady In Red and I Can Be Your Hero. Both seem pretty high, so I probably won't be able to sing either one without lowering the key. They both seem very vocally challenging songs too, maybe too challenging.

You must find your key and raise or lower the karaoke songs to fit your key.  Don't try to be a hero and say "I can sing it how it's written."     Do it in your key whatever that is and save your voice.   Nothing sounds worse than some macho dude trying to scream out something and all you hear is their voice "CRACKING."

Interesting concept, I never though about it that way.

How do you figure out what keys are in your sweet spot vocal range?

My voice is pretty deep, I wish I could find more songs that I could sing in my natural range and show off some of my lower range which is rich and deep. If I'm not careful when I reach for higher notes I can sound pretty bad.

Since i'm not a music teacher, i can't tell you.   But just play around with the key changer and when you can sing the song without straining your voice and it feels comfortable then that's where to sing that song.   Since disc companies don't always do the songs in the same key as the original recording, it's still a crap shoot.

I have songs i sing anywhere from 4 down to 3 up.   Just depends.    There are some singers that i would like to do, but i can't no matter what the key.   I just can't carry it off to my satisfaction and my voice gives out.  :(  My throat starts to hurt.

The only other draw back is the muiscal quality starts to sound crappy whenever the keys are raised or lowered too far.   You can hear when they don't sound right.

Your voice will be it's most powerful and the notes will be crisp and clear.   It will come natural without forcing it.

SW- I'm surprised you have Billy Idol in your songbook- isn't it too rebel rousing? Or sexually suggestive?

Y'all are being cliquish and rude. You don't have to agree with his opinions or like some of his ideas, but like it or not sidewinder knows a lot, he has a lot of experience and he could teach a few of you a few things.

You guys are constantly attacking him and it reflects poorly on you. You're wallowing in the mud every time you do it.

As far as his wish to remain anonymous, I totally understand. There are tons of weirdos and jerks on the internet just like in real life. Some people are nasty and have been known to do some rather uncalled for things in the real world because of something they read on an internet bulletin board, it's ridiculous.

You think you're superior? Act that way and stop the personal attacks. If you disagree, explain your point of view, don't wallow in the mud and stoop to constant rudeness. It distracts from the discussion.

Point taken Stogie, and I agree.....I am done sinking to his level...

If you read my post in another thread, you will see why he has incensed me so....

However, I will remember the old saying, about if you wrestle with a pig you still get covered in....

Isn't exactly F***  Her Gently now is it?   There Billy used his "talent" to "craft" it in such a way as to get his point across so it could be played on the radio without bleeps.     Kudos to Billy  :hug:      CREATIVITY in action.

Mr. dbk1009, I have to say that I really respect what you just did and the way you did it. I've been on internet BB's for a long time and you are a class act. My comments weren't directed specifically at you, they were directed at several people who have been doing this.

This isn't my personal battle, it has nothing to do with me in fact. I have just gotten weary of watching the baiting and bashing I've been seeing.

sidewinder for sure can be abrasive at times, but a lot of what he's said has made sense and been good information.

I started falling for the sentiment of several people here. It's easy to become part of the mob mentality. Then I said to my self, what's going on here? I realized that as abrasive as he may seem at times, many of his posts are insightful and worthwhile.

I can see in a discussion things getting hot and people disagree STRONGLY, but not following them around and harping on past discussions or that he won't reveal where he is located constantly. I see that all the time. People haven't always agreed with me, they said so, ok, what's next?

Also, I listen to some songs with explicit lyrics at home or in the car and it doesn't bother me in the least. I was at a Karaoke show a few days ago and some of the songs with off color, very explicit lyrics came up. It didn't bother me, but I can imagine it might bother some people and I think this should be considered very carefully. It's not appropriate for a family restaurant where children and the general public may be offended. This is my opinion. Everyone needs to decide what THEY think is appropriate lyrics for each situation.

But what "good" could it possibly add to any karaoke show?   Does it have any socially redeeming quality.   Is it helping to bring in a quality crowd?

I want to be where everyone over 21 acts like it.

The kids think they are acting like mature grown ups when they swear on the microphone, when in actuality all they do is show their immaturity.

I'd have to agree, for most shows it's not appropriate. This was at a fraternal post with a very small group and I think the KJ knew the people there on a first name basis.

I was still surprised. I've never heard that kind of Karaoke song before. I thought it was funny, but next to me was an elderly lady and I'm not sure how she felt about it. I certainly don't want to offend people or make someone feel uncomfortable. I wouldn't have songs like that performed at my shows for that reason.

There are places that will be more tolerant of an all out no holds barred show.  But those are not your typical bars and restaurants.    They are an exception.   Some of these KJs want to make every bar in to those type of places.     I have respect for my crowds and the bars.  I am not going to be a contributing factor in turning a bar into a Rough House.     So i can "party" on everyone elses idea of acceptable behavior.
