She could use the help and the job right about....NOW. :O

And if she sucks and doesn't ask for help....she deserves to lose the job.   Get better or stay unemployed.
If someone doesn't try to better themselves by listening to others with more experience or changing ways/policies that just don't fit todays times, then yes they should probably go.  If they ask for help I would be more than willing to give it.  You can't help someone who doesn't ask.  I think there is a thread someone started that someone handed them a guideline on how to run a rotation.  They admitted they didn't even look at it & threw it away,, who knows it may have been the end all of the rotation controversy, but since they didn't want help, they didn't ask, they obviously feel they are as good as they could be in that dept.  Just like the one DBK replaced, she may have felt she was a good host.
You sure don't like people disagreeing with you - that's obvious, so if someone came to your show & said i'm here to help you better yourself, you'd laugh them out of the place.  So no, if someone don't ask, I wouldn't offer.

This would depend on their track record.  If you are doing more jobs per week, maybe.  If you have been doing it longer that 15 1/2 years, maybe.     If you have had more multiple systems, maybe.  Had more employees, maybe.   If you really had something that would significantly improve my..whatever, maybe.

This limits just about everyone that i could possibly talk to that would know more.   So who would you listen to?    Someone that just started or someone that has not only been around the block, but has developed the block out of nothing.

There are very few in "our" class.  :O

Anyone can disagree with me all they want, but unless you have the numbers to show me something different, i would shut up and listen.

What good are multiple systems if you can't hold a job?

The more you talk, the more I am starting to think you are the type of 'pirate' we should be worried about in the industry. As you freely admit, you have a lot of money invested in your equipment. You also freely admit you use a computer and have multiple rigs. So you get the music cheaper and spend more on the system. I understand.....

And as for having to be in your rarified air to give advice? I call BS on that one as well. As one of my sales managers told us, he was in a slump and couldn't figure it out. He took a newbie out of training out with him to watch. As had been happening, he didn't get the sale. He asked the new guy for feedback. The new guy said "well you kept telling them 'I know you won't believe me but..' and they would look at each other like the next statement was a lie". The next day he went out and caught himself 4 times about to use the expression, and stopped. Guess what? He got the deal.

Moral?

Even the greenest, newest person can teach a BIGDOG new tricks...

10,600 songs- less than 500 duplicates.

Been in business since 2002.
Average 2 shows a week with my day job and family commitments.
Still enjoy and make money.

What other #'s do you want?

Oh, my booking #? It is on my WEBSITE, click the button for that...

What does doing more jobs per week have to do with how good YOU personally are - i've seen $50 crappy shows working 7 nights a week steadily for the last couple years, now granted not always working long term shows, but they are still working steadily.  If you are running multiple systems, you aren't personally running the other shows your system is at, they are only going to be as good as the host you hire to be there.  You can train them all you want, but ultimately it will be their show because you are not there, just billed under your name.

I would personally listen to any suggestions anyone has to offer.  Which is why I have comment cards available on the counter for anyone to take & fill out, they don't even have to put their name on it & turn it in anonamously.  If there is something that I am doing that someone sees & don't like, they can tell me or write it down, I will look at it and take all suggestions into consideration, this is how I better myself.  If it's an unreasonable suggestion or something that I know won't work or I have tried before, then I will probably let that one go.

Well you can stay in class, I am moving on to learn from forums like these.  I will never claim to know everything because that is pretty egotistically self centered to believe you know everything about a certain form of entertainment.  I am learning something everyday & try to apply different twists & techniques into my show.  You are pretty much locked into 1 way & one way only, so PLEASE do not lump me in 'your' class.

What numbers are you talking about?
I've been in the karaoke biz since 90 (entertainment industry since 86 - sound engineer, recording engineer, musician), hosted karaoke at the same club since 92 7 nights a week, got my business started in 94.   Had 3 systems total, 1 stationed at the club 7 nights, the other 2 were doing various clubs & private parties up until a 2004 as we were starting a new business venture as well & we needed to sell all my mobile equipment to help fund the new business.

A persons age has nothing to do with whether you can be a good KJ.

I am learning too.    But each day i learn what not to do also.

The only thing someone could suggest to me would be, how we can eliminate the cheap, no nothing loser KJs that hurt our industry by being the way they are.   The KJs you refer to that work 7 days have one big asset, their cheap price.  And the fact that there are idiot bar owners that hire them.

Bar owner business education classes would also be helpful.

Someone suggesting a song to get.   Someone suggesting i play some dance music.   Someone suggesting i let their friend sing because they are so wonderful.

Maybe a suggestion to clear up a technical problem.

But nobody can tell me how to run a more fast paced karaoke show.    How to play more karaoke songs or have more karaoke singers singing.  How to build a quality adult audience.

A persons age has nothing to do with whether you can be a good KJ.

Didn't say that.     Life experience.    Experience from years of entertaining.    Ask Ollie if it matters.     Experience KJing and working crowds.   A high school graduate is never the Dean of a College.     Not enough education or experience.

I'm the Dean of Karaoke.      A KJ competitor made a comment that got back to me.  It was    "_________"(insert my name here) has really set the bar for karaoke in this area."     Meaning that if you want to compete here, you have two choices... be very good or be very cheap.     Setting a "bar" would mean that you are at the top of something.     This is how i am viewed by my competition.    I didn't say it they did.    They respect my #1 position.    They would like to be where i am.    They try.    Lots have failed miserably.

I am open to suggestions but it better be provably good.    Back it up, show me the results.
