However, and I believe this deserves it's own topic, it brings up the point of what do we do as hosts to support ourselves?

Email lists?
Websites?
Myspace?
Facebook?
Word of Mouth?
Magazine/Newspaper?
Letting the Bar Advertise?
Pure dumb Luck?

If I wasn't running late I would create it, but what are everyone elses meathods?

Split & created as new topic!

I use email, MySpace, my regular website, website through DJ.net, any free 'search for karaoke' sites that I can find for letting people know events, specials, new clubs (well not anymore), new discs, song requests, etc.
I promote my main site on the web wherever I can.  Add it to search engines.  I get people coming in all the time that never been there before & ask how they heard about us, the number one answer was I was searching for karaoke in Tacoma on Google/MSN/Yahoo/etc.  I welcome them in & thank them for coming down.  Had a gal from Spokane in Saturday night said that was how she found us.  Found out she hosts karaoke over there.  So we talked shop a little after the show.
Used to print up fliers or used our local karaoke magazine that releases monthly, but have since stopped that for now.

The fact that I'm only KJ part-time I'm not in the league as some to answer but in the past I can tell you this.....

I have in the past listed my show on the free karaoke sites and all the DJ sites etc.
Have had many a show up telling me they saw the show listed on-line etc.  The other way is just by word of mouth.  Singers tell other singers they had a good time etc and they come down. ---   My goal would be to have a good web site and advertise for Private Gigs Parties Weddings etc. ( thats where the money I$ ).
The other outlets that I don't use are the FACEBOOKS MYSPSACES and the like.
They are great for pics and annoucments --- With my New Thursday gig geared towards the YOUNGER generation I might create and use a Myspace listing pics etc.
( is there a myspace for dummies tutorial?)

I don't promote anymore. I am happy with the amount of work I've had for the past few years.  To be honest I don't want any more work than I already have.  I am listed in the neighborhood entertainment magazine, but that is the bars doing.

I have to say though when I got started word of mouth was the biggest support to my business. I had a website for a while, advertised etc.... But it always seemed as if the people calling were given my number by someone I did a show for.

Because I wasn't doing it, some of the regular singers started a Myspace for the room on their own, but it doesn't feature all the singers and it often goes un-updated. I need to take it over and will soon.

I've had too many experienced karaoke veterans get just totally offended by us to want to advertise. We're not doing general purpose karaoke. As I've said before, this area is saturated with karaoke for them so they're not without a place to sing.

With us it's just word of mouth. But we're busy enough without anything else.
