Hey everybody!  I have seen several DJs that have a plastic tray that holds the slips for karaoke (keeps them in order).  Can anyone tell me where I can buy one?  I would really appreciate your help!

Never seen one actually for sale, most of these board of sorts are home made or adapted from other things that the hosts make work for them from what i've seen.  I know one guy that made one out of a piece of plywood & tight springed clothespins, cheap but effective for what he wanted it to do.

Are you talking about a tray that has multiple wells in it, one for each singer?  You can find those where they sell a lot of tools and hardware, like Lowes, Home Depot, or Sears.  They are used to put in tool cabinet drawers to hold small tools or hardware.

I've seen bullentin boards with push pins used very successfully also.  You can put it on a easel or mount it on the wall.

Thanks!  I think they made their own trays..just wondered if there was a manufacturer for them.

Thanks Tad!  I have looked at the trays that you are talking about..not quite the same.  I do like your idea about the bulletin board..think that I might look at purchasing a piece of corkboard and cutting it so that it fits in front of the player.  I carry a list for each of my karaoke friends but needed something to hold the slips that I receive from other singers.  Thanks for your help!

The best solution I have seen for archiving slips from users is a looseleaf CD binder, the kind that holds 8 CDs per leaf. Just stick the slips in the pocket that holds the CD.

Glad to help!

You might want to be careful of placing your board where it's easily accessed by the patrons.  Some folks just can't seem to help playing with the slips when the KJ runs for a potty break.   :)

You are right.  I, luckily, have a lot of friends where I play (thus far) If I thought they would bother anything, my mixing board and notebook would be my first big concern.  You know how it is with your equipment...they are like family.

How do you handle the rotation when the singers continue to come about every half hour throughout the evening.  I think it would be hard to rearrange the discs as needed if the slips are put in a binder in order.  Not being sarcstic or anything...I have never tried this.  I keep a list of singers as they come in and fit one in here and there as needed.  I, also, have a list of my regular karaoke singers songs so they don't have to fill out slips continously.  I use a cd player - not notebook for karaoke.  I guess we all have methods but I am always open to new ideas  from all my KJ friends!  I do have to say that the people who came in before the last hour of the show have priority since they came and patronized me and the bar all evening.

I don't know about anyone else, I use Index Card boxes for slips.  They come with divider tabs.  I have several boxes and keep certain slips on permanent file in one of them

I always kept mine in a single stack - could put 'em in my pocket when leaving the post.  For an organizer, maybe a flat-style roledex type unit or a business card pocket holder would work out for you, available at most office supply stores.

Back when I was spinning discs I used a dry erase board/bulletin board combination so I could change the rotation and then pin up the slips as well. It gave the customers a visual and I had a place to pin the slips for my needs as well. This served me well.

Then when I went to computer and I still had to use the Board due to large rotations and the software I was using did not have a top of rotation marker so I continued to use the board until about 6 months ago.

Now I track things with my current software (compuhost)  I don't have to keep the slips in order and use the board. I enter the songs for each singer as they give them to me and the software will allow me to keep as many songs in cue for that singer as I want, then I just give the slips back to them if they are regulars, if not I throw them in the trash. The software keeps all singers in rotation until I take them out so my rotation stays straight and there is no need for slips or the rotation board. Plus it has a scrolling rotation banner at the bottom of the screen to let folks know who is up next and where they are in rotation.

It has made rotations much simpler for me.

I use cloth hanger clip. One clip per singer, and it does not matter if the singer send in multiple slip.
I may change to using a name card holder and see if it may work. One card slot per singer.

I am going to try the one slip/one song method when I start.  I will just keep them in one stack and place new slips on the bottom. Should work until someone comes up with a really good tool.  I know many keep their rotation on their laptops, but that’s in the future for me.  I have heard both pro and con about inserting new singers into the rotation. I am leaning towards doing that because it seems like if you came to sing, and have to wait for 1 to 2 hours to get up to the mic, you would probably go somewhere that the wait wasn’t that long. If that’s the way I decide to go, it will be stated in the rules in the front of the book, so it becomes common knowledge and accepted.
