You mean for karaoke?  I don't know, but there's an all-Spanish version by Cesaria Evora on the soundtrack of "Great Expectations".  Judging from what you've told us, Eric, I'll bet you could sing it.  I just don't know if it's available for karaoke.  

Actually, there are quite a few songs from "Great Expectations" that I would love to see made available for karaoke, for instance, "Today" by Poe and "Walk This Earth Alone" by Lauren Christy.  (I've never seen the movie, but I picked up the soundtrack at a yard sale for $2 and I love it!)

The Besame Mucho I've sung is an LPK laser karaoke song. I believe it's by Trio Los Panchos.

There are also some great Cuban songs for people who like Spanish.  I'm suspect alot of people know the melody to the Cuban classics, Como Fue, and Siboney.

Getting back to this old thread, I find it interesting how our illustrious know it all is now talking about how he runs a high-energy show when it wasn't too long ago when he was asking me what that means

And... I really don't think he does knows what it means.

I don't play ANY filler music at my shows.  I've been to a couple shows that do; I don't care for it.  

Nothing but karaoke for 4 hours. I get them up quickly and they appreciate the fact that I play 55 - 60 karaoke songs a night.  Don't attack me, that is an AVERAGE.   240 minutes (4 hours) / 4 min (average song length) = 60  :dancin:  
If people would stop with the Hotel California and PBTDBL and American pie, I could play 56 songs consistantly.  So I am "wasting" 12 minutes per show with dead air. So what.

Depending on the crowd, I will allow songs with swear words in them, as a father of 5, I won't play them if there are kids there.

My shows are "High Energy" without the filler.  I'm worn out at the end of the night.  :sleep:

I have a feeling that I will be the new forum "heel."  I guess it's me and SW.  LOL

Let me ask you this, what is the difference between 12 minutes of dead air a night, and 12 minutes of filler music?

Maybe people aren't understanding what filler music is and how to use it????

Dead air is HORRIBLE....Breaks the mood...conversations stop in mid word.... Keep in mind, filler music is JUST that...it fills the dead air in the few seconds that karaoke songs are not playing. It is NOT a substitute for karaoke music.

We play venue-appropriate filler music and the length of time it plays is based on how long it take the singer to reach the stage ... the longer it takes the singer to get to the stage, the longer the filler music is on.  (We don't expect singers to turn and run at high speed to the stage when they are called.)  However, their song is ready and as soon as they take the mic, the filler music is gently dropped down in volume, and their song starts.

To reiterate - this filler music does NOT take any time from karaoke songs - we average a goodly number of singers an hour - with computer, upwards of 18-20 singers an hour...and we use filler music. People LIKE the filler music - you can watch people's feet start tapping or they mock dance at their table, or sing along with it....just a quick break (a few seconds) from karaoke singers.

I agree with and enjoy the use of filler music in the way you describe Karen.

What gripes me is the "KJs" that consistently play one or more whole songs in between singers.  I won't patronize shows like that, but they do exist to my chagrin...

Yuppers Tad - I avoid those places like the plague. Not sure why they do it - if people are going to karaoke, they want to sing...gosh, it seems so darn simple to me!

I like your definition Karen, if I was going to use 'filler music'.  I would never play a KJ song, a DJ song, A KJ song, A DJ song..........I will however play in sets.  If the room is enjoying....the DJ set keeps going (usually 3-4 songs, very rarely more....sometimes only 2 if there is not much interest...the "back to the karaoke rotation").  It's certainly not a 1:1 ratio.  Maybe 2 or 3 dance sets a nights....the rest karaoke rotations.......If there aren't karaoke singers...then it's opposite 2-3 karaoke sets..the rest DJ music.    It's mainly the 1st option and that works pretty well...MrD

Mr. Delic... Speaking of dance sets. I will ussually have 1 or 2 dance sets with no more than two songs.  However, on one saturday night I was sitting there with a packed club  around midnight and I didn't have any singers with songs in.  So I put on some dance music after making an announcement that if you would like to sing you can be up right away.  Then I hit the crowd and started asking people what they wanted to sing and I would get them up.  What I got from the people was they were tired of singing and wanted to dance and they were requesting dance songs.  So for the rest of the night we danced.  I did keep on announcing that people could sing at anytime, just bring me a slip.

It was one of the weirdest nights ever.  Good night, everyone had fun, but just weird.

<added in>  My definition of a high energy KJ is one that appears to be having fun. One that is interacting with the crowd.  I have never cared for shows where the KJ just sits there and announces the next singer and that is it.  I persoanlly show my high energy by dancing in the booth area.  Talking to people and just generally making a fool out of myself.  It's a lot of fun.

I love singing but like at bacherlette parties when there are bunch of gals dancing on the floor I will get right in  he middle of them and they go nuts and the audience goes nuts.

I think you should have kept it strictly karaoke & sang the rest of the night instead of what your crowd wanted, that's a bad sign that your show is failing.....

Not the entire show, just the karaoke part of it.

So if the last hour of your show your customers came up to you and said we're tired of singing tonights, can we just play music, you'd actually tell them no?  I as the karaoke purist will sing out the rest of the night if none of you will just to keep it pure karaoke?
