SW, What do you do between the time one singer finishes, you call the next person in rotation, and they make their way to the stage to sing their song? You have stated that you run singers back to back, no filler music, no dead air, how can you do this. I know some singers take their sweet time coming up to sing, usually the same ones that were at the KJ table just a few minutes before, so anxious to sing.

Until 6 months ago I did not use filler music. My hosting software has an excellent filler music feature that allows me to adjust volume, fade-in and fade-out timing and it provides seamless fading with one touch. If I didn't have this feature I would not do filler music. I like the automated feature as it is hassle free.
I prefer #3 method of filler music at about 3/8 to 1/2 volume of karaoke mix.
This software has totally changed my mind about using filler music. I have had many positive comments from my customers and literally no negatives. So I will keep using it.

well I am a number 2  . But the truth is this...my singers dictate my show. If Bob is there at 9 he sings...Charlie wants to eat first . If he is the only singer at 9 I play some music. Now this is a Thursday night thing..in the same bar when I play on a Sat. night, i generally play litle to no music as I have alot more singers. THey have tried a straight DJ on Thursday night and it doesn't work. I do not put music in between singers, but inbetween sets of singers. All singers get o sing b4 any music is played. If a singer comes in and hands me a slip in the midst of a rotation they are added to the end of that rotation. If they come with a slip while music is playing they are added to the next rotation. More singers, less music...simple. Singers always first, simple.

"I fade most songs out, so that's not a problem. So then during the fade out comes the singer recognition and applause. So the next song starts. Repeat every for song. No magic. No mystery."
I'm sorry (sw)...I'd have to see/hear your show. It almost sounds boring and very robotic....waaaaaaaaaay too predictable! If I may...do you have an extreme form of ocd? I do in a mild form (I would bet)....your ideas make me sound like a total wack-o. If the crowd doesn't react "just" the way you want them to...do you start talking to in tongues to calm yourself?
Joy, Again...I have to agree..it IS SIMPLE, isn't it!?! Do what works...adapt/change/bend for the crowd at hand!

My definition of filler music is also as TTownTenor describes (#3) at about 1/2 volumn.

If I have a real slow start with only a couple of singers I do as Joy states above, only instead of music I play a few "Original Footage Music Karaoke Videos" And while they are playing I work the crowd for new singers. (concentrating on those who are watching and singing along with the videos.
I got the whole collection last year and they have been a great addition to my collection. I highly reccomend if you can still find them, to purchase them for your collection. (SW, not reccomended for your show)

I don't use filler music but it sounds like something I could use. So which hosting programs make it automatic? I've got too much to do between singers to mess with it manually. Which ones just bring it in as soon as the current karaoke track is done and mutes it as soon as the next one starts?
Right now I'm just using a player.

Only time I may lax that rule is if it's an intro that will not affect how you are going to begin singing, or a long intro - sometimes the song will be starting while you are walking to the stage if I know you have time without missing a beat - but this is only if i'm in a time crunch too, not the rule. Too true Lonman... one of those songs that comes to mind is Neil Diamond's "America". The karaoke versions have the long intro like the studio version. If I submit a slip for that song, I will usually ask the KJ to start it before calling me up to sing... by the time I get to the mic, the intro is practically done... kinda like having a song with it's own filler! :drunk: sidewinder @ Wed Apr 23, 2008 2:11 pm wrote: Good KJs don't have silence. Heaven help the singer who has "The Gambler" or "Mack The Knife" starting to play while they're on their way to the stage.... or maybe they're already on stage before the other singer has left and is still holding the mic and thanking the audience for their appreciation... Yeah Right!

I use winamp. I put a 6 second fade in/out on it and then I place the filler music between each singer. I talk during the fade in and out to get the next singer up. You have to manually start the singer, unless you are going to play the entire song between singers(not recommened). It's nice because as you load your rotation in the program you can see where all the ballads are going to be and put more upbeat stuff in between. I personally think it gives you more control over the mood of the room. I know I have been to shows where every singer sang a ballad/slow song and after you have heard 4 or 5 in a row I am ready to just kill myself...

Quote: You have to manually start the singer, unless you are going to play the entire song between singers(not recommended).
After trying continuous play for awhile I went back to manual start because I can eliminate more dead air and save time by cuing manually. So that would work right in. And yeah... I'm not interested in anything except having something on between singers.
I just looked it over and I believe that the new Siglos hoster also has hands-off filler. Since I'm already familiar with their player and an upgrade is just $50 I may go that way with it.
This isn't a big deal since my room can get so loud on it's own that it doesn't feel dead between singers. But it would help at times like on Saturdays before 11 when the place is only half full. So I'd use it some.
Thanks Isis and Flipper.

Compuhost does auto filler tunes with a separate volume control. I bought a 50-pack of TV themes which were good for several weeks of filler, with a different one between each song. People were trying to guess them as they played....

^Now that's cool! I'd be afraid to put anything on that would compete with the singers. That's creative counter-programming mckyj57!

Sometimes it works to our advantage if regular music is playing, they hear a song & it sparks their memory saying "oh Yeah, what is that song?" I get that alot then they sing it.
The TV themes is fun, I had a disc with like 50-60 themses on it & after the show one night we played it & the audience had to guess what shows they were. I had a bunch of little giveaway crap that I bought & would throw something to anyone who guessed the right answer first. Great way to keep the crowd spending after a show is done - that is if you have anymore time afterward.

No....it's full contact (High Energy) karaoke. The next singer knocks the last one down and takes the microphone just as their song starts. Don't write me any letters, its' a joke.
I don't understand why nobody gets it.
