On the Doors thread Bill H. mentioned something about this.
It made me think about Dude Looks Like a Lady in the Rolling Stones song. I always thought he was saying Do The Funky Lady.  LOL  LOL  When I told my wife she was cracking up at me, I always butcher lyrics...

This was created because of Jimi Hendrix - Excuse Me While I Kiss This Guy instead of Excuse Me While I Kiss The Sky.

Mick Jagger mumbles, so that's not so bad.

Van Morrison is another one. He uses that Irish/Keltic drawl, so his lyrics are really hard to figure out. Then when you sing his songs, using the lyrics on the screen it never sounds quite right.

Most rock music has some of that going on. The key to singing rock it to not sound clear. Sort of the opposite of what they taught me in vocal training.

Try to decipher Nirvanas - Smell Like Teen Spirit without a lyric guide lol.

Guy wrote a newspaper article about the Eric Clapton classic -- Way Down South. My father read it down, nodding his head until he realized it wasn't really Way Down South, but Lay Down Sally. He had been hearing the wrong thing for years....

In the song, “Third Rate Romance” by Sammy Kershaw. I couldn’t figure out what kind of ‘romance’ he was talking about, but was sure the next line was ‘foreign rendevous’, until I actually looked at the lyrics printed out. LOL

I read an article about this a few years back...there's actually an official title for mishearing a lyric and thinking it's something else - it's called a "Mondegreen."

I thought "Dude Looks Like a Lady" was "Doin' it like a lady."  I also thought Annie Lennox's "Constant Craving" was "Lost and Crazy."

Bob Dylan songs are the worst. Most of the time he eats his words.

Or that Bachman Turner Overdrive song - Makin Carrot Biscuits.  Funny I always thought it was Takin Care Of Business.   :D

That's hilarious.  I used to think it was Way Down South too!!  I think it was my brother that finally corrected me.  I am great at massacreeing lyrics, and sometimes when I found out what they really are....I continue to sing them the way I always heard them.  Why not?  Most people don't listen that closely! ;)

A friend a few years ago was singing along with "Hotel California"...

"On a dark desert highway...cool wind in my hair...warm smell of POLICE DUST...rising up through the air..."

I STILL haven't figured out what "police dust" is  :rotflmao:

Until right now I thought it was "Do me like a lady". I was always puzzled about how exactly a man gets it done to him like a lady. But it sounds a bit icky whatever. Thankfully, I don't need to wonder anymore.
