Just a small rant.  I went & got lunch today.  Total came to $11.50.  I handed the young girl - would guess 18-20 $12.  She mistakenly typed in the wrong amount which gave a false change amount on the cash register screen - SHE HAD TO USE A CALCULATOR TO FIGURE OUT MY CHANGE!  I could not believe that.
Screw the never leave a child behind law, if they can't do simple math, don't pass them on to the next grade!

wow Lonnie you have touched on a pet peeve. Here in NZ we no longer have pass or fail in exams...no-one is held accountable. It is simply different levels of achievement.
How does this prepare them for the real world? and how is an employer supposed to realise that what they are employing has even the rudiments of understanding of the basics?

My son "achieved" all the way through and was keen to go to university. I said but boy you have failed math, and failed history...he said no I havent...its a points based system and my total number of points overall mean I have achieved enough credits to move on next year.

well when he came to applying to a university he was told he didnt have enough literacy or numeracy credits...so his "achievement" had let him down.

Because there was no accountability, he simply shrugged and told me he would make them up...so I waited for his determination and his dedication to kick in...when it didnt and he showed no sign of picking up his numeracy and literacy credits, I told him to get his head out of the clouds and get a trade, cos I was not going to throw good money away on subbing him for a 3 year tertiary holiday with fail being the end result.

ok Vicki is off her soapbox now....end of the day, he is earning as much as me and has a trade 2 years out of school, that he can persue all over the world and be paid mega bucks for. And if he doesnt achieve at his job, he dies or someone else would die due to his negligence (hes a line joiner with electricity company) so finally he is accountable.

Was talking to a gal the other day who works in a small independent grocery chain. The stockers make more than the cashiers.. If they have a temp power failure forget about buying anything and checking out until the power comes back on. I can see that with a totally computerized register but only to a certain extent.

Goin nuts till the bar opens again!!!! That should be in a couple of weeks.. I think Dave will want us Fri too but I already promised we would go at a reduced rate until we built the crowd up. When we are not there the bar is dead.

That bar in the new gig thread would hire us in a heart beat 3 nights at $200/night but it would mean dishonoring obligations and years of friendship with the hosts there now.Nancy one of them told me that the guy who does fri sold his business and I have already talked to the mngr about it. So I am at some little crossroads right now. LMAO

I totally agree with you Lonnie, children aren’t learning what they need in school, not even the basics it seems.  However, having worked in convenience stores before, I have worked for some that insisted you entered the amount tendered, and let the register determine the change.  Even if you already have done the math in your head.  Not to say that applied in this case, but possibly.  My pet peeve is the lack of common sense among younger people.  Maybe it’s that they spend so much time with the video games etc. I don’t know.  Thank heaven they didn’t have that technology when I was growing up.  You sometimes had to actually think and make up things to play with.

Was she able to get the correct total on the calculator ?  Or did somebody have to explain to her how to give you five "o"'s ?

Whenever that stuff happens to younger kids in retail, I assume they've just freaked out under pressure, and anxiety is cluttering their thinking.. Usually they aren't quite so foolish, just anxious.

Yeah she figured it out.
This isn't an uncommon occurance.  Me & my wife had a similar experience at McDonalds (go figure) a while back.  The amount was 10.26.  I gave the gal a 20, she typed it in and was counting back the bills & I said hang on I have the change, as I was reaching for the change in my pocket, then handed her the .26 cents.  Man you would have thought I just had told her the end of the world is upon us.  She COULD NOT figure out how much to give back - I told her a $10 bill.  She didn't understand.  SHE had to get the manager.  THE MANAGER had to use a calculator - he then realized it was 10 bucks change I was supposed to get, he said he got confused when the gal still had the bills she was counting in her hand.
Had a kid a Jack In The Box not understand I wanted a $5 bill back instead of $1's - can't remember the amount.  So I gave him the correct change & an extra dollar so i'd get a $5 back, he kept trying to say I gave him a dollar too much, I said I know, you owe me $4 back, I added the $1 so I could get a $5 bill back.  He actually had to think about that one for a minute before handing me the 5.

Kappy years ago we did some work for a truck stop Part of the payment we got 10% off of the meals. My buddy said now remember he gets 10% off and I get 10% off. Se said OK I'll just put everything on one bill and take 20% off. I looked at Bob and looked up at her Hey wait a minute I'm gonna go get 8 more and we are all going to eat for nothing!!! She got the funniest look on her face and then all 3 of us broke out in hysterical laughter.

By this time everybody was watching. She then said now remember you can help yourself to the salad bar.. WE CAn? We jumped up and wheeled it over next to our booth. The whole place was in hysterics. After that she  couldnt serve us withouy laughing her arse off.

OK,  now *THIS* is getting scary !   LOL

I recall when I was 16 working in retail, I'd get very distracted. We didn't use calculators, and cash registers didn't calculate differences returned to the customer.
When folks were impatient and there was a line, and somebody had a total of perhaps $9.98 and would hand me (LETS SAY)  $51.23 asking if I they could have a bunch of quarters back too for laundry I'd get messed up... Especially if they changed their mind mid-transaction..  Some did in fact TRY to mess us up at times hoping to screw us up in hopes an error was made in their favor. In those days those of us with (what was later to become known as) ADHD that smoked pot all the time and drank really couldn't think straight LOL

I'm a picky eater. I always have to have extra pickles, or hold the ketchup, or something different done to my food (plus.. if you change it, then you know you get a fresh one, not one that's been under a heat lamp for 15 minutes)

What gets me is when people are hired who can't read english. If they are processing orders, they need to be able to read the order properly. Taco Bell in town? I don't dare leave the window without examining my bag- 95% of the time something is wrong.

But I do agree- kids are much too lazy & high-tech these days.

that and the help desk phone calls you make where you cant understand the freakin help. If someone cold calls my phone and have an accent so thick that I cannot understand them, then I will ask to speak to their manager and tell them exactly why I will no buy their product.
I am not gonna buy from someone I do not understand

If I go to Burger King, I will ask that they do a fresh flame broil patty.  They have them all made up ahead of time & nuke the patty to warm them up.
Don't get me started on wrong orders.  You have to literally check each thing at the drive thru before you pull out - McDonalds is probably the worst for this.  It's happened on occasion, but more often than not I do not get exactly what I ordered & have to go back inside to get correct order while the rest of the order is sitting getting cold.

I once bought $5.79 worth of food items at Safeway. I gave the young cashier $10 but for some unknown reason the cash register said that I was owed $14.79 in change. I looked at her and said "this is wrong, I should only get back $4.21." Instead of taking the time to figure out and calculate it on her own, she insisted that I keep the $14.79. So much for the "customers always right" philosophy!  LOL  Fine by me! :)
