When I try to shut down my computer, it restarts. Also restarts when that is what I tell it to do. Has anyone ever had this problem, or does anyone know how to fix it?

Shut down how? By a button, from the start menu, Ctrl-Alt-Delete, how?
Not only that, is it a PC? A Mac? Laptop or desktop? The answer will be different depending on your answers to these questions...

is it a new machine? when mine was first built it had a tendancy to reboot when I plugged headphones into the front sockets...the dorky tech hadnt got it quite right in his rush...
if not then try to ensure you havent picked up a nasty. Go to the pc-cillin online scan and do that

It a Dell desktop, A local tech put it together for me when my IBM quit and wasn’t repairable. I am speaking about the usual method of shutting down from the start menu. I have been shutting it down since this problem occurred by holding the on/off switch in when the screen shuts down for a few seconds before the reboot starts. That works but it’s a pain, I like things to work the way they are supposed to.
Yes Keith02, I realize I could pull the black cord from the wall socket [schild=6 fontcolor=00008B shadowcolor=FFFFFF shieldshadow=1]Duh![/schild], but that’s behind the stand that holds the cpu and the printer, it would be a hassle to move things around and pull the plug whenever I wanted to turn the computer off. If you've been shutting it down that way for awhile.....you've probably messed up your operating system......might need to repair or reinstall windows....

Ok, Ok.....you don't like my idea......
Then let's do it this way because your operating system is experiencing a fatal error, but you can't see the message:
1.
Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2.
Click the Advanced tab.
3.
Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and Recovery dialog box.
4.
Clear the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the necessary number of times.
5.
Restart your computer for the settings to take effect.
Now when you go to shut down and a fatal error occurs, you'll at least see it and it won't cause an automatic reboot. You still have to sort out what's causing the problem, but that gets us to the next section quite nicely.
Once you see the error, post it here and we can help.

Personally, Mizz Rose, I think his comment deserves a swift kick to the mid region. :D

Keith, That seems to have remedied the problem. I followed your directions, it had to restart for the new settings to take effect, then I tried shutting it down and it worked fine. Thank you for the help.

I'm glad that worked..
Also, in the bios, (Setup menu) many computers have an option, "Last known State"
and that can cause a reboot..
(Common in some server and workstation models)
