In response to the conflicts and arguments here about formats I have given in to the impulse to join in. As one who has spent many years in part time entertainment and hosting, I will try to shed some light on the subject. This might be a lengthy post and some here wont read it fully, they will just scour it and pick out what they want or try to pick it apart. These indeed are personal opinions but are based upon years of experience as a singer, master of ceremonies, tour guide aboard the 6th fleet flag ship  and many others. No brag, just facts I have entertained prime ministers and heads of states..  With a very open personality and ability to open up to strangers I gain trust and make friends very easy. It has never been this way, in high school I was so bashful I couldnt talk. It has taken years to reach this point. I was born in 1940. Here I will try give some methods and ideas to advance ones talents.

Remember the first time you sang in front of a crowd? With that in mind consider the following. With butterflys and new found courage you reached deep down inside and discovered a part of self you didnt even know existed. Gradually you discovered talents and with practice you improved those talents. As the butterflys became less and less the challenge was gone. Some are satisfied with that, others find new challenges which keep the heart pumping. A motivational speaker once presented this fact. If you are not doing something daily that brings butterflys then you are not living but stagnating.  I will expound upon that. If you are not doing that as a singer or host when at a show then you are stagnating .And believe me you will get burned out and then it will become a drudgery.

As a host do not become mired in a rut but try new things, attitudes, approaches and listen to the audience and with a gut feeling give them what they want. Good systems, rotation rules or anything else is a small part of the equation. The biggest part is Public Relations and presenting every talent and part of yourself that you can. I was in a rut and quit awhile and now with renewed energy I am once again reaching deep down and finding more of self and talents which at one time were non-existent. This is life and spiritual development in it's purest form. Read this paragaph again and again until you fully realize the meaning.

Babs started a thread about teaching a new host. All one can do is teach the basics. Now heed this. Every show should reflect the personality of the host. I can not reflect your personality nor can you reflect mine or do a show like I do. Each show should be the hosts show and reflect every talent and personality that they can muster or have achieved. To say a show should include this or not include something is rediculous. This is up to the host and an experienced host will have the knowledge to play the crowd and provide what they want. If I am in a new place I sing something in the genre that is popular there. Should a show or format be any different?

In conclusion I realize I have left things out that should not be ignored here. This post was honest and open and came from the heart. I have posted here while intoxicated and stepped on some toes. For these things I apologize. I think sometimes the only reason I havnt been banned is my longevity and ability to contribute. Remember one thing With alcohol in the blood there is no butterfys in the gut and you are not living but stagnating. Hell you are not even developing spiritually. With this I give you my love and heart. If you have read this far then bless you!!!

[font=verdana] Very, very well said.  I did read all the way through it, and agree with you.  The first time I sang in public, was with a friend in her church, must have been around 12 or 13 years old.  I wasn’t all that good, so I made up for that with LOUD.  Bless those people, they actually applauded and acted like they enjoyed it.

That was not my first realization that I love to sing though, quite the opposite.  My first realization came when with husband and brother in laws I was tipping a few at the local saloon in a very small town in eastern Oregon, and they dared me to get up and sing with the band.  To make a long story short, I fell in love with singing, being on stage behind the mic, and the applause.  Thankfully, I believe my ability and talent have greatly improved since those early days.  I probably wouldn’t get far on American Idol, but I get a very positive response from the crowd when I sing, and that’s good enough for me.

Years ago I read Loretta’s book, Coal Miner’s Daughter, and realized that she was in the Seattle area the same time I was, going around to different radio stations trying to get her career launched.  Couldn’t help thinking, why didn’t I do that?  You never know, I might have been the ‘Queen of Country Music’ ……LOL   My only excuse is that time in my life was a lot like some of her songs.  I was usually pregnant and still had a baby in diapers.  They just seemed to keep coming every two years, sometimes a little less than two years.

Having worked for years in the bar industry, I was able to meet a lot of bands, so opportunities to sing on stage were plentiful.  Then I decided to learn to play guitar, and would sing and play for tips when we lived in the Leadville- Buena Vista area in Colorado.  One of the best things about that was proving my husband wrong.  He said no one was going to put tips in my jar, just to hear me sing and play my guitar.  The first night I did this, I made $75, after that it usually ran $50 to $60 a night. Not bad for a few hours of having fun back in the early 80’s.  Then I started doing jam sessions at different bars in the area, and had them calling me wanting me to do a jam session in their facility.  It was a fun time in my life.

Back then I was a lot more gregarious and self confident than I am now.  I am finding it difficult to get myself out and talk to bar owners in my area and get my system put to work.  Guess I have to reach a little deeper and find that fun loving gal that used to live in this body.  I used to be quite the flirt, now when I try flirting I get the feeling they are just tolerating an old lady…what happened?     I am reminded of an interview I saw one time with Katherine Hepburn in her later years.  The interviewer asked her how it felt to be her age, and she replied, “How do you think it feels, to have this very young mind in this old body,” that’s not verbatim, but it was along those lines. When men get older, they develop character in their faces. I have even known several that were better looking as older men than they were when younger. Women, on the other hand, just seem to get old.  Not fair!!

OMG! I really hadn't intended to ramble on so.  I just wanted to state that I am tickled to find out there is someone on this forum, older than me, only 3 years, but older.  :hi5: You have quite a resume, if I ever get out your way, I would love to meet you.

Well said. However, my suggestion for some of these issues are to allow sticky posts with basic information that can be updated by the forum moderators based on inputs from others. I am on other forums where this is done and every time someone asks about basic stuff, just point them to that sticky post. This also eliminates those "Hi I am new and what do I do?" type of posts. Well, most of them anyways.
