yeah but some of our gigs are over 4 hours long and can run the gammut from soft background music to metal...when I am doing the background stuff I always have my mic in hand but for classic rock or metal I stand way back and belt it..I couldnt do without a mic stand

You can do that with a stand, too, if you grab on to it.

I am now running compression on all my gigs, so that is a lot less necessary. The deal is to sing into the mic, though of course if you want to take advantage of proximity effect you still have to eat it.

I think the question was who uses them and who likes them. Not how to use them, correct? I don't like to use them. As many different styles of mic use as there are singers, I would imagine. This forum always turns into a "my way, I know best," kind of place. I was giving reasons I prefer not to use one for my OWN style of singing.

Actually, the way I interpreted Jamkaraoke's post was that he wondered how we prefer to set up our mics as a KJ, as well as what arrangment we prefered for the microphone as singers.

As per my previous post, I "cover all bases" for the singers at my show.  Personally, I prefer singing with a cordless mic.  I would not be surprised, however, that as my gestures during singing, which have been expanding over time, continue to broaden, that I might come to prefer a mounted mic.  So far, no.

I don't use a stand when hosting, but for my own gigs then for certain songs I use a stand.

original question  was 2 part--As a KJ who uses stand for singers as I find MOST singers usually RIP the mic out of the stand anyway and can't figure how to get it back in without help  

2nd part - As singers do you prefer a stand and is it a PLUS if a show offers one

I guess we must have singers with more coordination, because we don't have that problem.


I like having a stand, but rarely use one. Perhaps it is because so many shows don't have one -- I can't count on one being there.

I practice both with and without stand, more without.

2nd part..  If you ever watched any videos of Ray Charles he boobed hie head from side to side. This was not for tempo he was working the mic. Last year Martina McBride was on the today show.. I wanted to see how far she moved the mic away when she belted out the chorus. She didnt she just turned it sidewise.

As a singer I dont use a stand I like to move about the stage and find the sweet spot and maybe even dance a bit..

Some of my singers really like a stand, only maybe 20% use it.

I have a friend who was a singer in a rock band for a long time, and he told me that he was so used to singing into a stand when he was in a band (playing a guitar) that he did not think he would feel "right" holding the mic.

It may not be a big thing to most of the singers, but for a few it matters.

If we could just find the all the little details like mike stands that are important to different 5% subsets of our singers our shows, our shows will become more sucessful.

For me the mic stand falls definitely into that catagory. Yes I have a dented mic from people dropping it, but that woud probably have happened with any mic, stand or no.

Dr Fred, I couldn't agree more with your above words of wisdom.  With the state of Karaoke here In S. Fl, we've got to be considering every little angle, all the time.  And, you can't consider an angle if you don't know what it is.  As you may have noticed in my posting on this thread, I've tried to cover every possible angle regarding mics  That's also why I read every comment, even those off thread, on every posting, in almost every Discussion Forum thread.  I also try to stay abreast with all of the postings on the Tech Forum.

Mic stand.....yeah

I didn't realize Frankenstein was using this forum. But I digress. As a singer, I really like using a stand. I've also noticed that a good number of my singers also "need" a stand (kind of like Lonman's woobie). I wouldn't do a show without at least one. I also only use the ones with a round weighted base, and not folding legs. Those just end up tangled in the mic cable.

The mic stand adds a sense of "realism" to karaoke, and it could use all the realism it can get.  If you use the right sized clip there should be no excuse for mis-handling the mic.  I've gone through dozens of microphones, seems not many people realize a microphone is an expensive device.

What is the point of offering a wireless to a singer, are they going to roam the entire room?  What types of wireless are you folks using, just curious, I recently had to replace my shure wireless handheld, no karaoke singer will ever touch it again.

The wireless brand that I prefer, using sound and price as a criteria, is Vocopro.  While most KJ's I know who are using Vocopro have the UHF model, I purchased mine when it was already apparent that UHF may become a problem next year.  So, I am happy with my VHF units.  I also have two different pairs of Hisonics which do the job, but I prefer the Hisonics. (geez....edited 6/10...clearly I prefer the Vocopro's)

Considerations in buying less expensive cordless mics:
 - I had tried Vocopros (UHF) extensively and liked them before making my purchase.
 - I've had compliments on the Vocopros from the "right" people who have used them
 - When the audience sees all of the mics I offer, it encourages large groups to get up
 - I heavily promote sing-a-longs and my wife goes through the audience handing out our (not very expensive) cordless mics

I doubt the comment was toward him either.  May have been in reference to mic stands.  I have heard that comment at my shows after a tall person sings before & leaves the mic at it's tallest position.

I have 4 wireless mics and do use mic stands.  Many customers like to sing with them.  I take the mic out, but hold on to the stand with my other hand often.

I only keep two mics on stands, easily accessable to the customers.  Easier to keep them from dissappearing.  I keep the third mic in a mini stand on my system for when a 3rd mic is requested.  I keep the forth mic for me.  It is on the same channel as my headset, and only used by me, usually.  Cute girls have talked me out of it.

The Frankenstein comment was most likely a harmless poke at the person who said: "Mic stands...yeah." Probably a reference to Phil Hartman's Frankenstein character from Saturday Night Live who used monosyllabic grunts and words to comedic effect.

Oh, and to answer the question:

Yes, I have my wireless mic sitting in a clip on a stand, and I'd say the majority of singers use the stand. In the last year, the wireless has been dropped once. My corded backup mics get dropped at least once a month.

Personally, I like the mic stand. I used to sing in a band and used one then, too, so it's a comfort thing. I don't need it, and get by fine without, but if it's there, it gets used.
