There are a lot of songs that I've liked and sung that are in only _one_ kj's book in this area (that I know of). Different kj's have different songs. That's good in a way, but it can be frustrating. If I want to sing a particular song, I often have to rely on my memory--"Let's see, I remember seeing song X in the book at location Y..." Here are some songs I've done that I've only found at one place (different places each time, though):
"Get it Right Next Time"-Gerry Rafferty
"Eres Tu"-Eydie Gorme (oddly enough, the kj who had this song uses a different book at another place where he kj's, and it's not in that one--I've noticed that with a few other songs also)
"Yellow River"-Christie (I sang this last night at THE one and only place I know of that has it)
"Smuggler's Blues"-Glenn Frey (the kjs who had this one are retired now; I don't know what they did with all their discs)
"Your Daddy Don't Know"-Toronto (I don't think the kjs who had this one are even in the St. Louis area anymore)
I'll probably think of others later. I know these aren't sung very often (although I know that a couple of you guys have sung "Eres Tu"), but most karaoke books have LOTS of songs that I've never heard by artists that I've never heard _of_...or songs where I know some of the artists' work (and even have some of it on CD) but don't know the particular song that's in the book...
Also, I know only one kj team in this area (note to ericlater: it was the first place we went to last night) that actually posts their songlists online. (Knightshow, I know you do this too, and I've seen a few others from kjs in other regions.) The goal is so that people can decide ahead of time what they want to sing. I wish they all did that! Sometimes I want to sing a particular song and I get there and they don't have it. An example is "Before He Cheats" when it _first_ came out, BEFORE everybody and their mama was singing it. I watched Carrie Underwood's video on YouTube (and yes, she really does trash the guy's vehicle like she sings about), so that I could firmly implant the melody in my brain. Then I went to a karaoke place to sing it--and voila, they didn't have it. It was a few months before I got to go karaoke-ing again and by that time I'd gotten sick of the song. (I did wind up singing it for live band karaoke once, but only because it was a live band.)
I like the "Lost Classics" series (I don't remember what manu). That's the kind of songs I often tend to go for--ones you don't hear many people sing. Last night I sang the Lost Classics version of "Shambala" by Three Dog Night, and it went over really well. Ericlater said he'd only heard 1 other person sing it. The only thing is that from what I've seen, not all of their Lost Classics are really "lost". I was at a karaoke place once and a person was about to sing, and I could see the screen and the Lost Classics logo came up (it has a pyramid on it). I'm thinking, "Oh, good!"-- and then the song starts and it turns out to be "Faithfully" by Journey. And I'm thinking, "'Lost classic'??? C'mon! People sing this all the time!"

I've sang some songs off Lost Classics. I thought the renditions were pretty good. I think they are made by Priddis?
I've sung One Man Band by Three Dog Night. I've only seen one place that had it in their songbook. House of Blue Lights is another rarity. I like singing James Dean by the Eagles, but don't see it in too many books. It's probably good that not everyone has the same collection of songs, because it forces the singer to go other places sometimes.

I agree! It's nice to go to a variety of places and not see the same people singing the same stuff every time. I wouldn't want everyone to have the SAME song list-- it's just that sometimes it's hard to remember who's got which songs in their book! Sometimes I go in with no idea of what I want to sing--but then there are other times when I would like to sing a particular song (or 2, or 3...).

I had a KJ Friend who has done vocal removal on roughly 1000 songs that were not commercially made anywhere as karaoke.
About half of his list was "Unique".
After he moved I took over the bar where he did his show.
Many of my customers have come to expect a few specialty songs that are not obtainable anywhere as commercial versions.
While the vocal removal versions are often not "great" if the singer really likes the song they go over quite well..
While so far I have only done about 50 vocal removal songs, usually one or two get sung on average every night. Thats far better than the average for the commercial songs where only about 35 out of 5000 get sung on any one night.
For my crowd among the most popular converted songs that I have are:
Rebel Girl -Bikini Kill
Harbourcoat -REM
F** the pain Away - Peaches
Like A Friend - Pulp
Gloria - Patti Smith
Transmission - Joy Division
Hot Topic - Le Tigre
Eat Steak - Reverend Horton Heat
Damaged Goods - Gang of Four
Usually at least one of the above songs is done every show, and all of them have been sung by at least a few different people as well....
I have an oddball indie rock crowd...

Quote: I'm not familiar with Billy Joel's. The one I know is by Asleep at the Wheel, a Texas swing band ( www.asleepatthewheel.com --check 'em out, they are good).
Commander Cody did the best version of that song, IMNSHO.

I could have sworn the one I sang was on Sound Choice! Maybe I should go back thru' my posts on the SC message board and check...
It's interesting that you said "Yellow River" is only on European manus. The kj that has that song also has "Do It Baby" by the Miracles, and I've sung that. I don't remember what the manu was, but they used British spellings in the lyrics onscreen (e.g. "tantalising").
Yeah I think you guys are right about the "Lost Classics" series being from Priddis. When I took voice lessons, I used to buy a bunch of their tapes (yes, cassettes--I'm dating myself, heh heh!)--mostly gospel and standards, though. I think I remember seeing "Lost Classics" in their catalog. I remember their newsletter used to sometimes have a segment called "Meet Your Guide" where they interviewed people who did the demo vocals. I thought that was cool.

Me too! Their version of "The Boy from New York City" is available, but when I sang the song for karaoke (memo to self: sing this again sometime), I did the Ad Libs' version 'cause it's in a better key for me. However, during the ending of the song, I sang it more like the Transfer's version: "Talkin' bout the boy, the boy from New York City..." because on the Ad Libs' version (and the karaoke version I did) the lead part is just "Oh yeah" several times. I don't know if any other Transfer stuff is available. I worked at a college jazz station in the '80s and we played a lot of their songs.

How about "I don't like Mondays" by Boomtown Rats? I think it's only on a Zoom disc.

not only stuff like that, but custom discs that are bought can severely limit the songs... even when those manus stop making them, or change 'em!
I have 24 custums legally bought from STTW, SBI, and SC... there are a few songs i have that virtually NOBODY has! (at least two years ago that was true! !)

That surprises me. That song seems to be pretty popular, although I don't think I've ever heard anyone sing it for karaoke.

I have that on SC8571.
For a while it was sang once a week. I haven't heard it in about 3 years.

Boomtown Rats
I have a singer that does that song on Mondays. He will probably do that every other show. I didn't even know I had it before he started singing it. It's a SC version.

When the the 10 original Lost Classics discs came out they had quite a few songs that were not on karaoke at the time. Now MOST of these songs are available from other manus like Sound Choice. I think "Is It Love" - Mr. Mister is still exclusive to Lost Classics (it is available on Priddis' custom CDG site).

I try to find rare rhythm & blues and soul music and i have some that I've never seen in anyones book although they are listed in KJ Pro. They are called R+B and they were made in canada although they are discontinued now. They produced songs such as Mary Jane by Rick James, Distant Lover by Marvin Gaye, and alot of others made nowhere else. The strange and ridiculous thing is some of them were made in two parts so you have to wait for the song to switch to the next track to continue singing! How crazy is that? Actually I Look at them as collectors items and i think about ten of them were made. Anyone else here ever heard of them?

Man I thought I was the only one that loved that song, killer falsetto. I do " Reasons " by Earth, Wind and Fire and it's kind of in that same range. Wish I had " Sideshow " great song. Rudy
