One Bourbon One Scotch and One Beer --good karaoke and a good bar song, plus it's the classic renters lament.  I've got to think it will always be there!

I'd like to think that some of Roy Oribson's songs, like Crying and Blue Bayou might be there?  Part of it depends on what songs get covered again by artists, and also what songs get put into movies.

ericlater - good list. I would agree with most of those if not all.

The newer songs like "Before He Cheats" haven't been around long enough to see if they will last through time. I am on the fence about "Picture" too. Some of these songs disappear after time.

I think this list should include artists also. Although maybe one of their songs don't stick out as a classic their music in general will. Cher, Madonna, Whitney, Elvis, Beatles etc...
We will always have songs picked by them.

Only one that I have heard done regularaly here is Before He Cheats.  The others on rare occasion.



Matchbox 20 still gets quite a bit of play as well (here).



Alot of the 80's headbangers are being done more, I don't mind a bit :c)

I honestly don't think there is a way to really guage what will last & what won't.  It is completely dependant on the bar itself, the crowd, genre avg. & what songs the karaoke host have.  Many of the songs listed in this thread are dead on - and may really last, I have heard them since I started karaoke when I turned 21.  MANY are seldomly heard (at least in my club), if at all but are felt to be karaoke staples?  It just goes to show that what is burning hot in one area can be a complete ice cube in another.
Same with the overdone songs thread (wherever that one went), alot of those you all listed as nightly - sometime multiple times for those who allow it, are just dust collectors here.

I hate buying new discs - especially in the rock/pop catagory as this stuff MAY get sung for a few weeks to a few months then never get touched - even if they are good songs.  I purposely wait about a year before I start buying discs for 'newer' stuff.  If I still have interest & requests for a song after a year, then i'll consider it - at least that kind of shows me the song has a little more lasting effect than the typical flavor of the week tunes.

You know, Lon, I was thinking the same thing when I was considering the question.  For example, I was told I just had to have "Big Girls Don't Cry", by Fergie.  I don't believe anyone will be requesting that much in a year from now.

So, I'd like to suggest that we continue the thread with our guess(es) as to what songs from the last 10 years ONLY will be sung 10 years from now.  I'd really like to see that list.

It's only worth buying new stuff if it's got a reasonable shot at getting used. It all depends on the room. Right now in my place the hot song with the divas (the ladies with the pipes) is "Bleeding Love" - Leona Lewis. It gets sung once a night. Sometimes twice.

Was it worth buying? Yeah I think so. Will it be sung much in six months? Don't know but probably not as much as now. 10 years? Probably not. But that doesn't mean that I shouldn't have got it.

Will "Stay" have that kind of legs? Again I'd say probably not but who knows. "Before He Cheats"? That one I'd give a good shot at being around in 2018. If we all are, and in one piece that is.

Never heard of this nor had a request for it.  Same with the Fergie song mentioned above, someone said it is THE hottest song & gets done nightly, i've had it & I thnk MAY have been done once.

All I'm saying is buy only what you think it has a reasonable shot at getting used. I'm not recommending Leona Lewis or anything anymore. And you guys know your rooms... Lonnie you especially.

Edit: "Bleeding Love" is certified RIAA platinum and has been #1 on the CHR charts for several weeks. Now I'm not saying get it. But you might hear about it.

This might seem to "Go without saying" however it's pertinent for this type discussion (since I haven't seen genre, and age groups and locations mentioned in here) to bring up the fact that WHATEVER the songs are that will withstand the greatest :test of time: will be the songs that had the *greatest  emotional* impact (even thru background play) affecting the youngest age groups listening- it's tough to know because aesthetics are in fact conditioned and aquired tastes, and few of us know today, what we will love in 50 years. "Test of Time" might hinge upon what the listener is "fed" by the industry, and little more.

 For me,  what is now referred to as :Classic Rock: (60's and 70's) songs have withstood the test of time,  for some that are younger, this genre of music might include groups such as "Kiss", and some of the Punk Genre's  (adjunct with what the younger folks and radio keep alive; Resurgence ? new trend ? What areas of what is today considered classic ? we can't know, but it depends much on music airplay assuming (oldies) are a trend..  and what area of music ?  Wedding and Bar Mitsvahs" ? Classical music enthusiests ?  Inner city won't like country, you can pretty much be sure of that... etc..  Will the 70 year olds in 2050 be wild about KORN and BISKET ?   I can guess no,  but I might be totally wrong.  Things in the arts are THAT unpredictable..  History isn't indicative of same time in the future- this can't be gaged that way.


We are conditioned towards certain styles depending on age/location/times and like most aesthetics, different times of our life we are more impressionable... Kids and teens today that love some style and wish to keep it alive in their lifetime will experience music for the longest duration..  What has endured the past century, might not be music that will be recalled by the "mid-lifers" in the year 2108.. Tastes change..

Also Needless to say, we can state with some assurance that anything called "a classic" has endured alot of time, and such songs exist in country, classical, R&B, Broadway, Opera, etc..

Few of us place money on what  the top 50 songs of the year 2075 will be in rock or ballad genre however.  "Test of time" over what :time frame: ?   Songs I play that were classic and "top 10" for VERY long time periods in the 60's and 70's often are greeted with "Oh, I never heard that before" by those as little as 5 years younger - (today in 2008).. VERY tough to know what the trends will be in 50 years.  If ballad is phased out, that will end alot of what we have had exposure to unless it's "brought back" via another "retro-classic" trend via airplay..

Too many factors..

I just ordered Pantera and Iron Maiden from a company in Finland...anxiously awaiting those..Our room is more likely to be singing that kind of stuff than Leona Lewis - and btw, I sure don't get how she is all that and a big of chips right now - she has a pretty common-sounding voice. She was on AI a couple of weeks ago (or was it last week?)....pretty girl, nice voice, and now the flavor of the week.  Mmmhhh.....

Karen it's got tons of youthful enthusiasm and no fear when it comes to trying out new stuff. But vocally... well there's maybe a half dozen or so that aren't too bad. So for any veterans... I don't know what you'd think.

I agree that the Leona Lewis track is a rather standard issue contemporary power R&B ballad, but it's strong enough instrumentally to keep the room engaged ant there's a couple of places towards the end where the singers can soar and strut vocally. That's why they like it I think. There's two that pull it off pretty good (the same two that were all over "No One" last winter).

If you or Lonnie know how to get hold of "Fear Of The Dark" let me know where.

there are people that I hang with that love Bob Segar, Elton John, and Billy Joel, and bring out MANY of their songs... I like doing some of the lesser done ones, just because I hate to do the classic stuff everyone else does!
