Right, I have just finished my latest batch of CDG > MP3+G ripping. I DO still take my disks with me - but tend to leave them locked in my boot - grabbing them "if needed" (ie: if someothing goes wrong).
I'm currently playing off my laptop using Compuhost and all is well. However, I see a lot of dedicated players. They play CDG and they play MP3. Some have USB input for removable hard drives... See where this is headed? Do ya? Can ya feel it?
Ahem. Anyhow...
Is there such a device as a rack mounted player that will take MP3+G files from a USB source - or even burned to DVD as files?
Saves me lugging the laptop around

There are players but you have more control using the laptop in my opinion. Stuff like easier search for songs, rotation management comes to mind that is not available with the players you are asking about.

You're totally right - a laptop affords me a LOT more flexibility - issues such as rotation, searching, minor adjustments etc.
However, can you point me in the direction of such an item? All I can find are CD players that will do CDG, or HD players that will do DivX. I am looking for something that does MP3+G.
Thanks

cavs make a player that has a usb port, you can plug in a harddrive there and it would be easy to use it for karaoke if your files were mpeg or whatever. I bought one for the hotel I work for...only thing is, I dont like the player, it came with several cavs scdg discs but it wont play the higher numbers on some discs. But the harddrive that is permanently plugged in performs fine

Just read up on it. Seems it plays it's own propietary (sic) formats - so would need to convert all my files...

there are a few rumors about disc players that will also play mp3+g... but nobody's put one out that I know of. I remember Tig talking about one in the UK... unsure what happened to that.
Understand you're asking for a RARE item...
You're better off with a cheap computer or laptop!

dedicated player = physical disc player, like a Cavs or JVC or whatever

As many players play DivX videos you may convert your MP3+Gs to AVIs and use it on a standalone player.

and how long does it normally take? and which software? sounds interesting IMO because it makes alot of sense if the AVI is small enough.

AVI is a possibility I guess...
I knew devices would be rare - was just thinking for a backup solution. But then again the prices I am seeing, should really just get a second laptop...

That's what I have. Since I need a backup of my files anyway, I put them on a USB drive. CompuHost can be installed on multiple laptops -- you just transfer the "dongle" to the active one. I set the backup one up so it scanned the music from the USB hard drive, and there is my backup player. (Siglos allows installation just based on a key, so I can put that player on another laptop for backup as well.)
And my service club also uses CompuHost, so that if either I or they lose the dongle, we have a backup while we are finding, mailing, or replacing the lost one.

You could look into this unit, it seems to play many formats and states it will play off of an external USB device, but doesn't specifically state MP3&G. An email to the company could put that question to rest one way or the other.
