It's just occured to me that noting the capacity of the venues we play in will reveal:
the profitability considerations for our "gigs"
the equipment requirements
what is a "busy" night.
My current and last two "gigs" legal capacity was less than 70

Hmmm,......My venue has the "front bar" where you walk in, with pool table, video games, tables, horseshoe shaped bar, stools all the way around with a capacity for 50. But, the back room where I have my show, "function hall" has a capacity for 200. At least that's what it say on their "certificates". (one for each "room") So, I guess mine is 250 total.

At one point, we had a thread about being stuck in the back room. It has the advantage of insulating the bartender from complaints, but the disadvantage of appearing to minimize the impact of the karaoke. I say that because every "back room" gig I have seen has trouble making it, because it becomes apparent that there aren't that many people that directly care about karaoke. Particularly if they keep the jukebox going in the other part of the bar.
Of course the tape should tell, but I get the gut feeling sometimes -- back room == death.

That would be a tough gig for me Donnie B if I were separated out like that. A lot of my singers are playing pool, playing video slots and poker, hanging out at the bar, and in general trying to find things to do in between their turns.
How is that working out?

Lon,
"Yes"and "no", as to "slow night". If I say a slow night is 35 people (in a venue that holds 70) I'm at 50% capacity. If you say a slow night is 50 people that's only 25% capacity of your capacity. While I would have 15 less customers than you, the owners at my place will probably be happy, while the owners at your place may be disappointed.
I apologize not having read Bill's thread/poll about room size. I was thinking he was refering to dimensions, so didn't even look at the poll until now. If this thread could be pulled and Bill's thread re-named that would be ideal!
mEANWHILE... Please don't post here...see bill's thread

Hey that's OK Eric. I'm just gathering info on things and I don't care where it gets deposited.

Bar #1 - Legal - 78 - I have counted 120.
Bar #2 - Legal - 88 - Again I have counted around 130
Bar #3 - Legal - 54 - Biggest count was 80 something.
I work in very small places.

Actually, the set up is ideal. Once you walk into the front bar, there are two HUGE sliding doors (which are open during any/all "events") about 50 feet straight ahead, which is where I gig. That way, those that want to watch sports, sit at the bar, play pool or video games have that option. From my stage area, I can see EVERYONE who enters the front bar. Also, because of the "construction" of the building, the sound from "my house" is somewhat "muted" to those in the front bar, so watching what's on TV and HEARING it, is not a problem. Once you get about 5 feet into "my house" you can't hear what's going on in the front, but you can see it. Last night for example, I had some people who wanted to sing & stay in the front bar. Well, a little volume on the mic, and I can readily get their attention, and the "regulars" know that. Also, had a "karaoke pub crawl" come in, about 50-60 people, who said they were only going to be there about an hour (not). They stayed 2 and 1/2 hours, floating between the front bar and "my house". They commented on the sound and the selection, and as to how I handlled the "influx" of so many singers into the rotation, without upsetting the regulars. The regulars were telling me the "crawl people" were just amazed at the entire set-up ( meaning the two rooms and the way they "interacted') as well as the "old guy hosting the show".
( that would be me LMAO ) On a normal Friday, I probably get 30 to 40 people, with about 15 to 20 of them singing. Let's just say that last night.....I earned every cent of what they pay me. ($175 for 4 hrs. , 8pm -12 midnight. Not bad for an "old guy"!!)
So....to answer your question....it works for me. :handshake:

Sounds good. You have access to the whole room, which is different than I pictured.

Bill H,
Exactly, and the people in the front can easily see what's going on "back there", so what mckyj57 said about the "back room = death", does not apply. Hey, maybe you (mckyj57) should have your "gut feeling" checked out. Might be something you ate. (crow....??!!....pass the ketchup please....don't forget the S&P. ):handshake:

Hey, I am happy to see back room karaoke alive and well! Nice to know it's possible.

Both of my venues have the karaoke inside but a big porch area where people are smoking and drinking etc.
The inside capacity is about 50 for one and about 250 for the other.
But both can handle about twice their inside capacity outside.
I feel good with a crowd of about 40-45 in the first place, and with a crowd of about 120 in the second.
Of course the second usually is running 3 bartenders and the first usually gets by with one (and no door guy) except on very busy nights.
