and what effect would non-zipped files have on the hosting software that is looking for it?

One good reason for zipping files is that you only have one file instead of two as for MP3+G. It is easier to manage them that way.

One file??? I count five.

1. the zip file.
2. the mp3 file to be read, unzipped and written.
3. the cdg filee to be read, unzipped and written.
4. the mp3 file to be opened and read.
5. the cdg file to be opened and read.

vs. not zipping

1. the mp3 file to be opened and read.
2. the cdg file to be opened and read.

In either case there are no files to manage.  You put them on your hard drive and you're done.   Not zipping makes that one step easier to do that as well.

Almost none.  The hosting software is going to be looking for a file name.  If the file extention is .zip or .mp3 or .cdg doesn't make a whole lot of difference it still has to conduct a search.  If the file is zipped it has to be unzipped and then the computer has to search again or an express call has to be made to a fully qualified path.  In most cases the second search is necessary on the off chance that the mp3/cdg file names from the zip do not match each other or the zip name.

LOL
Actually I had this discussion once before with exweed and his point is valid, I am just not going to make that change at this time.

If I had to do it all over again I think I would probably buy a huge HD and rip to wave & cdg---unzipped

Your thoughts?

I had the discussion too, and came to the opposite conclusion. I guess that's why they bet on horse races....

I wouldn't a few years ago at all, and still wouldn't for a laptop. For a desktop, though, I might consider it. It won't gain you much, but WAV sound quality is certainly as good as it gets from a CD. 8-)

If I am a CDG based I would do the same; .wav+cdg unzipped.
