My name's Chuck and karaoke is defintley my number one hobby, but I don't get to do it as much as I used to (comes with having a child). I've been karaoking for nearly two years and I used to go to this place called Category 5 becuase they had such an awesome song list and I loved the people, but they were shut down due to some illegal activity going on in the back. Now I either go to D2 Lounge or Scuttlebutt Pub, the latter of which doesn't have a very impressive list (No Dirty Deeds?! What's the matter with you?!) D2 is really cool, but the last time I was able to go, I was pretty much the only one there (what can I say...I like an audience). Anyway, both bars are split up about 20 miles apart, so it's pretty much a toss-up when I get a chance. The first time I sang, I wasn't as nervous as I thought I would be. I was at a Halloween party and the woman hosting had a barn and hired a DJ. Most of the people watching were friends, so that probably helped with the nerves and I thought I was going to murder the song (Back in Black), but everybody said I was pretty good.

The very last time I sang at Cat5 (before they were shut down  :(  ) I sang Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap and the KJ said it was the best AC/DC he's ever heard. I can imitate Bon Scott much easier than Brian Johnson (I almost got a brain hemmorage singing "Shook Me All Night Long"), but one song I'd love to sing would be Night Prowler, but no one ever has it. I don't even think there's a track. Last December at my company Chritsmas party, I sang "Roses" by Outkast and won second place. They judged by how loud the crowd was, and they lady who won did "My Immortal" by Evanescence. A lot of people said I did better, but her husband (who is 6'6" and sitting at the very front table) screamed his f'ing HEAD OFF. I hate to sound vain, but it's a CONSPIRACY I TELL YOU! lol Last Friday I did "Sweet Child 'O Mine" and butchered the LIVING HELL out of it, probably becuase I'm so out of practice. I needs a karaoke machine.

There are three things about karaoke that I've learned kind of erk me.

1. When someone who has already been up once gets called again before I do. (normally a regular)
2. When a bar doesn't have a great list of songs. (Why does no one have Tenacious D?)
3. When someone sings the Shinedown version of "Simple Man". (IT'S NOT BETTER! lol)

I do love it when someone gets up there and knocks a song right out of the park. Some of my more memorable are a middle aged guy who did "Crazy (@$%&#!)" by Buckcherry, "American Badass" by Kid Rock, "Rockstar" by Nickleback and another young guy did an absolutley KILLER job of "Don't Stop Believing" by you know who. Anywho, let me give you my favorite songs, and I'll end this uncomfortably long thread.

Roses - Outkast
Back in Black - AC/DC
Simple Man - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Hells Bells - AC/DC
What I Got - Sublime
Ms. Jackson - Outkast
For Those About to Rock - AC/DC
White and Nerdy - Weird Al Yankovich
The Whole World - Outkast
Rollout - Ludacris
Proud Mary - CCR
Have a Drink on Me - AC/DC
Hey Ya! - Outkast
Sweet Child 'O Mine - Guns 'n Roses
Thunderstruck - AC/DC
Big Balls - AC/DC
Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap - AC/DC
Wonderboy - Tenacious D
Tribute - Tenacious D
Highway to Hell - AC/DC
Stiff Upper Lip - AC/DC
Bulls on Parade - Rage Against the Machine
Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen

Glad to hear you're having so much fun with it.  That's what Kroaky is all about.

About the small audience at D2, just keep going back, and tell your friends.   A good show needs all the help it can get.  Also, on those slow nights, that's a good time to practice.  Speaking of Practice, check out a blog at www.karaokeathome.areblogs.com.  Its all about Karaoke and Practicing.  If you want to get good, you've got to practice.  Think about getting a system for home.

When you ask "No Dirty Deeds?!", the KJ is probably one of those who thinks that to hear Dirty Deeds once is great and kinda cute, but after that, you're pretty much good for about 2 years.  That's true with a few other songs like Love Shack, American Pie, and several others.  Songs that need to be taken out and shot (not so much for Dirty Deeds though, I've always loved AC/DC, ever since they came on the scene).  The only thing with Dirty Deeds is that some people try to sing that really shouldn't.  Sounds like you've got it down though.

About your "erks", I agree
1.  If I find a KJ that plays that game I let him know how unethical that is, leave and never go back.  Who needs that.
2.  I got into the habit of taking my own karaoke CDs with me.  That way I don't have to worry about whether they have it or not.  Also, some versions of a song are different.  If you have your own, you're going to know exactly how it goes.
3. Eh! :)

It sounds like you've got a great song list.  Just keep on having fun and stand up and SING OUT LOUD.

you should give judas priest "youve got another thing commin" a try.  dont forget about Faith No More or Quiet Riot with "metal health".  As for a decent home system, it all depends on how much you want to spend.

Welcome to KS
You sound like a karaoke enthusiast for sure.  LOL There is nothing worse than seeing KJ favor a singer. That would make me mad too. I love the song Dirty Deeds. It's cool when someone can do it justice. I bet you do a great version!
