I have to agree with Knightshow I've heard about the $25 laptops but where can you purchase them?  If you have some links I would be interested as this may be a good option if the price is right.

Note:
After some searching on Ebay I can find some under $60 but they don't boot up or something is wrong with the motherboard etc. Finding one in good shape that will do the trick is generally $150-$300.

I still think books are better.... for some reason it feels more "casual" hanging out than looking up stuff on the computer.

Oh come on guys!!!  I believe that the cheap computers mentioned were desktops, not laptops.  I have three working computers that I saved from the dumpster sitting on the floor under the table that I am working on and four if you count the one I'm currently typing on.  If you can't find old computers for cheap you aren't looking.  Put an ad on craigslist for goodness sake.

In developing my plans for my new kiosk, I never considered eliminating books altogether.   In fact, JR just made a couple of comments (in a thread about printing books) regarding the benefits that books provide that i had never even considered before.  I will never be without printed books.

Why is there anyone who believe it's either books or a computer?

I'm not trying to talk you out of books because I think that they are necesary too but....  You will be amazed.  Once you install a kiosk system your books will sit and your slips will go unused.  When I started using the at my regular gig I did not get a single paper slip on the forth night.  After that some folks went back to the books but very few.  When I quit that gig I was getting about six slips per night out of seventy two song requests.

I personally have the feeling that my crowd would rather use me to search for their songs than look through my book.   It may be the type of crowd that would gravitate to a kiosk.

weed, if you think I'm bringing in a second desktop unit strictly for a songbook convienience, you got another thing coming.

I'd rather investigate a kiosk software that ties into a good pc if I'm going to do all that! And ONLY for a permament gig!

Sheesh...

Knightshow:  I'm not saying they're not a pain in the donkey to drag around because they are.  I don't really care if you use kiosks or not nor what kind of computers you use.  What I am saying is that something that you dig out of the dumpster or get at a yard sale will do exactly the same job as something you spend a grand for.
From my experience 1 kiosk=5 books.  Updating the kiosk is instant and free.  They also free up  a lot of time during the show.  The down side is that they're bulky and they don't work outdoors in the bright sunlight.
