Actually, getting people to loosen up and not take themselves too seriously would be, IMHO, an important skill for a KJ to develop.  But if the KJ takes himself/herself and the show too seriously, what can you expect from the crowd?

Furthermore, if you can "hear" what would be good songs for people to sing who need to try something different (for whatever reason), that is another good skill to have.  Beyond having that skill, more important is the ability of the KJ to get someone to "take the plunge" and try the recommended material.

I know the lady DBK's speaking of.  She trusts him and is expanding her horizons.  So, trust is of incomparable importance.  People must trust the KJ to give good advice, trust the KJ to provide a good mix/sound, trust the KJ to adjust the key (where needed), trust the KJ to make sure their effort is not diminished.

The best capsulization/summarization that I can provide of what a (good) KJ does is to make it all look easy.  As with so many other jobs, the further someone is removed from actually doing it, the easier it looks to the uninformed to do a particular job!

Dbk well put - It also reminds me that when I first started it was a lot harder than it is now. After a few yrs under your belt you learn as Dbk said what songs fit different people, so you can help them sound their best. That is just one way of steering the night the way you want it to go. I'm a true believer you can train your crowd if you are lucky enough to stay in the same venue for any amount of time. If your crowd trusts and respects you, you have a much easier go. That takes time though especially if you've had a bad KJ come before you.
