Here is an interesting article in the Associated Press.  It makes the case that American Idol needs more personality, and perhaps less vocals:

I think you see this in the bar too sometimes.  It's great to hear a great voice.  But sometimes its even better to some guy slightly tipsy do a "unique" rendition on a song.  

Two standout karaoke performances I remember, one of Walk Like an Egyptian, and one of the Bohemian Rhapsody were sung by "characters" as opposed to "vocalists".
