IMHO, based on the karaoke activity around where I live, karaoke is about the same (if not a bit more active); however, due to increasing competition of kj's and a rough economy, I can see why it may appear that a lot of karoake venues are losing clientele. People's disposable income for entertainment has shrunk and a lot of establishments are forced to make economic decisions which may involve the termination of karaoke shows in favor of less expensive forms of entertainment.
A good point has also been made that karaoke now exists in different forms (such as home karaoke systems, and on-line singing, ala Singer's Showcase) which coupled with the higher costs to go out for the evening (especially during hard economic times) means a lot more people opt to stay home.
Conclusion: karaoke is alive and well, just taking on new forms.
It's so easy to misinterpret a posting. I assumed that BillH was asking about the long-term prospects for karaoke as it pertains to public performances in public venues? I also must note that most of us are incapabale of responding to other than our local area (in the US) situation.
I have no idea of what the impact is on the "karaoke industry", in general, from what people are doing at home in regard to karaoke. That's another question entirely.
When I spoke earlier about distinguishing between the current state and whether karaoke is in decline, I was considering that with the economy being what it is, karaoke may be suffering CURRENTLY (along with other forms of entertainment). That may or may not have anything to do with the LONG-TERM trend!
As to S. FL, the decline that I believe has occurred, began several years ago!
